Looks nice but over budget I think.

Nah he's said he has the cash for a good one.

Bit too far for SiC, could have an holiday in Blackpool though, or send me to look.

Think the seats are Orange stripe? I don't care for them much.

Or coulda collected the yellow £1040 one  :-D

On holiday in Devon for some of next week and then my wife is in for an operation. She would not be impressed whatsoever if, during her resting period after, I wander off for the day picking up a rusty old banger!

That came up yesterday. Local to me in Bristol too.

It is what spurred this post and question on:

There seem to be quite a few rubber bumper GTs around the £3.5k-4k mark. I'm going to guess they are the mint examples of them. A bit like the mint chrome bumpers are £5k-6k.

I keep looking at this one: http://m.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C879813

I love the colour and, even though I like the rubbers, chrome ones are much nicer. The bits of rust scares me off before, but worry me less now. What is to totally putting me off is stainless steel sill covers. It is only down the road though, so possibly worth a quick look.

I'm guessing that they're invariably there to hide shocking stuff?

I don't think I'm confident enough to spot a dud on eBay without looking at it. At this sort of money (under 4k), I can afford easy enough to buy one BUT it's enough to be gutted to find it's fucked next MOT time.

I'm debating to spend 3.5k to 4k on a mint rubber, or 3.5k to 4k on a slightly scabby chrome. Chrome obviously better looking but I also wonder if I'd more likely to get more money back when its all scabby in a year or two (or more) when I come to sell.

Also a mint example could be pretty boring... Especially for material on here for you to laugh at me!

I thought you liked the rubber bumpers.

Chrome is always easier to sell on.

I once bought my wife a car to race whilst she was in Hospital.

I do like the rubber bumpers, but I probably have to admit I prefer the chrome given the choice. At least chrome bumpers it looks older and you can excuse the shitter handling! I dunno, it just seems that spending >£3.5k for a rubber seems expensive. Especially as they're jacked up and apparently handle worse.

But then if I see a restored rubber with a webasto roof in orange for 3k-3.5k...

Right, the greens horrible to me.

Either of the other two I'd buy today.

You will obviously spend a couple of weeks thinking about it :)

Looks alright, it's in Angrydicky country. He might even know it!

I had a few planned today that I wanted to go see, but when I was about to make calls this morning, I got told we had plans already. Humpfh. :(

Tempting to throw a bid on that horrid one that I saw on Thursday, just so I own one! Still sat on £1150 no bids.

The engine and gearbox in it seemed pretty good though if anyone needs a donor lump.

That orange one in Wales looks promising, but I really would like one either tax exempt, or one that will be next year. I.e. pre 1978. Or if it's not, it's really cheap. I dunno, I just find it hard to justify to myself to pay >3k for a rubber bumper car too.

Yes, you're probably pulling your hair out in despair reading that. Don't worry, I'm just as frustrated with myself too.

In the meantime as a distraction, checkout this place near me that I found today and never even knew existed. Peaking in the window I saw a trade insurance certificate, so I'm guessing it's still trading.

This was found during a walk to a local classic car show. Of course I saw the obligatory MGB in a lovely beige. Naturally it had an old bloke with a flat cap sat in the drivers seat. His sills were in very good shape though.

Pin pics of them all on the wall & throw a dart blindfold, that's the one to buy.

Yeah I know. I'm just really wanting one now. Especially after wandering down to that classic car show today. Also reminded me that most real "classics" (i.e. ones that are used), aren't pristine examples like in museums or even like moderns. Quite a few had really rather grot on them!

I'm glad I saw that shit red one on Thursday. Otherwise I'd probably have bidded and bought it.

I used to show my Midget when I had it, no intention of doing so but I drove into to the car park & most times got invited into the show. Free parking nearer the interesting cars, who'd say no? It was always amusing to park it covered in road filth amongst all the shiney garage queens.

I'm not sorry eBay, I really didn't miss out.

Just checking HowManyLeft and there is nearly twice as many MGB GT on the road than Smart Roadsters. I don't think I need to panic I won't get one and won't get one for the right price.

I do still chuckle at gold seal engines being a selling point, aren't they all about 20years plus old anyway?

Posted

To be fair it did run alright and pulled pretty well. The gold seal ones iirc were hand built by selecting all the best tolerance parts.

Of course there's nothing to stop someone (or a engine rebuilder) cracking out the gold paint pot and some brushes.

I thought Gold Seal was the factory rebuilt replacement engines (and maybe gearboxes).

They were, hence my comment they must all be old enough to need another rebuild by now.
