MGB GT - Mission finally complete! Phew.

That red is alright but Orange is definitely still my favorite. But wouldn't mind either.

Blue is a big like too and the early dark blues looks amazing. Bronze and silver both looks sharp - I usually dislike both on modern cars. White is boring but acceptable. Brown not so much a like (sorry, I know this is a proper AS colour). Green is definitely a no-go.

Rubber bumper ones with the chin spoiler look the coolest. Those bumpers apparently are great and super sturdy when modern cars bump into them - utilising the modern cars crumple zone to protect it!

Chrome bumper cars are more classy but I suspect more fragile. Supposed to handle better though being lower and not a huge lump of weight hanging off each ends.

This is local and suitably grotty. MOT history looks good though. Also has a sunroof which is big plus points with the other half in the summer.

Mine was that colour, looks quite good.

Where the rear arch has bubbling there tends to be a piece of sponge tucked inside the boot. Bit late now but best taken out.

Tyres look on the large size as did mine. 185 can be fitted, but often foul the lip on the wheel arch, some grind half the lip away.

They also weigh as much as a modern car! Hence the chrome bumper cars are quicker & drive better.

Phone call made, no answer so I've left a message asking him to call me back.  Quite keen to go and look at it!

He replied to my text this morning and I replied back saying you'd contact. Thanks for taking the time to go have a look though. :)

I'm genuinely really excited about this one too. Possibly the unknown, sense of adventure and the lure of a bargain.

Apart from rust, I guess the only major concern is the ownership situation. Ideally with a V5 in that paperwork.

IIRC ScaryOldCortina bought something in similar circumstances and with a V5 that turned out to be someone else's. I know he ended up being arrested and chucked in a police cell after collecting it. Hopefully a V5 is kicking around in the paperwork that can help figure out the owner. Might possibly even be a valid case to get the current owners details from DVLA askmid website?

Have a really good around and move the seats backwards and forwards to their limits. Having welded my 'professionally restored '78 rubber bumper back together after the MoT failure I waited for the pass ticket before asking the tester whether the drivers seat should be pop riveted to the floor! The tester walked away with a white face, I spent another day welding!

The good thing about old cars is you can fix them at the side of the road. The shakedown run ended when the fan belt melted. The alternator bearings were knacked. Had to raid "Tuesday" (so called because she always broke down on a Tuesday) for an alternator. Hasn't moved in about 8years, once you raid one for parts, it's a one way trip.

This seems to me an advantage that you have in getting the best car for your money. You actually prefer the rubber bumper models that most people see as second best and so are cheaper.

That red one looks to have a fair dose of wob.

Satin red too..........should have cleaned the roller.

Yeah, 2k is worth a punt given its long and fresh MOT. But wouldn't want to spend more than that on it...

Is there an issue with the seat mountings? E.g. captive nuts that get stripped and not easily replaced.

Or just another rust spot that people bodge repair?

There are so many you can afford to be picky. But it's also easy to hunt for perfection when in reality 99% of cars will have some issues. Unless you are looking for concourse entries then it's a matter of comparing price/ condition. I don't mind a bit of work and they are so simple to work there aren't many things that are beyond a DIY enthusiast.

Yeah, I've figured my priorities. Rust and especially in structural areas are a big no. Electrical issues and mechanical are a yes. Obviously and ideally electrical.

Unfortunately most seem to have rust. I think it'll be highly unlikely I'll find one with some too. If I do, it's probably hiding it!

I do worry how well it'll last living outside though. I intend to put a car cover over it during the winter. But I'd still like to drive it over the winter too.

This is red. Very, very red.

Originally white though apparently!

Not sure how much more I'd want to go without viewing it. Fresh MOT, but previous advisories for corrosion and a gap.

That's clearly rubbish. A rotten, plopped up heap of shit that still looks like a rotten heap of shit from 10 feet away.

Again: borrow money from the bank and buy a good one. Junk like this is just pissing money away.

You are very negative Mr Bluejeans! It's hard to really judge a car from some crappy pictures on eBay.

Even more expensive ones seem to have history of corrosion. It'll be hard to exactly know how well it has really been repaired.

I can see from here that the red one is scrap. Look at the fucking state of it! There's rot and bulging filler everywhere. Give me ten satisfying minutes with a screwdriver.............

What do you reckon on this one?

I guess the biggest negative is those wire wheels.

I think that is what most of the other ones you've posted would look like if you peeled off the fresh paint and wob.

I fired up the laptop to extract some pictures out of Facebake of that beige MG. Not very good quality, but I'm a bit concerned about that sill. Especially some of those patches that look like they've just been thrown on. I do think £1.5k is on the pricey side for it possibly now. But hard to say without looking in person.

I genuinely appreciate all the assistance given. I'm totally out of my depth with this sort of age car and learning all the time I read a post on this thread. I guess the reason I'm looking at cars under £3k is that is because if I do buy a rusty dud, I probably could recover at least £600-1k of that. If I lost £1.5k-2k in a year, it'd annoy me but I can stomach it.

If I spend £5k-6k on what looks to be an immaculate one, but turns out its just been very well patched up and/or it gets destroyed in a year being outside, I'd be gutted to loose that sort of money. I mean this isn't likely going to be a car that I keep for years and years. If I do especially like them, then I can always get another once I hopefully know much better on what to look for.
