Toyota Corolla Levin

I've been ruminating over selling the Levin for a while; owned it for 2 1/2 yrs and it's been no trouble at all, mid 90s Toyota reliability, done approx 95,000 miles.

In the time I've owned it I've changed the cambelt, done a couple of oil changes, replaced the rear shocks and the missing fog lamps. It drives as it should, hard suspension, corners very flat, VVT works (it is primitive and works only on the intake valves through an oil pressure activated solenoid) Electric mirrors and air con work, only thing doesn't is the double din stereo.

There is no rust, a few small dents and the paintwork is very flat in places. At some point the driver's side front has had a knock and been repaired less than perfectly. Overall solid if scruffy.

Driven hard it is quick, not quite in Lotus M100 territory but similar, driven like grandma it will do not far off 40 mpg. I want £1500 which is less than I paid and cheap compared with similar cars.

I refurbished the wheels too; I'm not sure if they are the actual original ones as I think several types were fitted and the history of the Levin/Trueno is a bit shrouded in mystery.

Typical 90s Japanese upholstery; like it or loathe it! There's a small hole in the back of the drivers seat, otherwise the fabric is very good.

Twin cam is the same 4age as fitted to mk1 MR2 but with lightened internals, 20 valves and individual throttle bodies. Ot has a throttle cable, no fly by wire shite. Like the MR2 they burn a bit of oil but nothing untoward. The engines are popular amongst the mk1 Escort mob; if you want to bum rape my Toyota for its engine you can fuck off....

Yeah it's scruffy under there, maybe I should do a detailing video on YouTube. No, thought so.

The headlights are about as effective as rush lights. I think a lot of older Jap cars lamps were crap. Someone tried to upgrade with higher power bulbs and just melted on of the bulb holders. I went back to regular bulbs. Could wire up a better circuit, not difficult.

I've got spare front and rear lenses and a complete exhaust to go to. I checked over the original exhaust last year; getting a bit elderly but the cat is like new.

Unsurprisingly I am NOT going to list this on ebay; I think we can all imagine the kind of donuts that would appear...

The trim level is BZG, you could (if you were Japanese) buy a BZR which had all the option boxes ticked.

This car has a limited slip diff and the aircon. The only options it doesn't have are the 6 speed box (which is accepted as being fragile) and the rear wiper.

Another job I did was to solve the clunking front ARB, they need to be clamped up VERY tight. Tried new rubber bushes to no avail- maybe poly bushes would do? Several layers of duck tape and the ARB has been silent for 2 years.

That's a really good looking car Nibblet, I've always like the styling of a lot of mid 90s jap coupes and this is one of the better looking ones.

I'd be all over this like a tramp on chips but I can't drive a manual with any degree of comfort these days and I can't get out of anything to low down without making several unpleasant grunting noises,  not a lot of help I suppose still GLWTS.

That's a lovely thing, nice understated looks. Really unusual over here too. Way way out of my price range sadly.

You forgot to mention that it has Super Strut Suspension

Oh but YES! SSS.... Deffo sorting 'men from boyyos', over on ToyotaNation [yupp, they suffer me to!]

The whole 'handling/front rotor [discs] package' debate hinges on 'of course MINE has SSS'.....

Au contraire, Jap fanboys are welcome.

The bovine creatures that spend aeons texting, eventually arrive, spend hours picking on every tiny defect as if they were buying a D type le mans Jaguar are what do my nut in.

Lovely car, though I fear that many prospective buyers will be attracted to the blacktop under the bonnet rather than the smooth 1990s styling.

Don't think I've seen one of these in the metal. Noice. As a big fan of the 4AGE, the prospect of a 20v one is very tempting, but sadly I am chod-heavy at the moment so ahhhmmmm oooot.

Really hoping that it goes to a good home, or better still, stays in the fold. It is a lovely thing to behold.

Nope.... I may be 'in wood' 4A 20V but it's not going into ToMM©

That would be an AE101 wouldn't it?

AE111, last model albeit pre facelift, there were a few small changes 1996-1998.

Yes it has Superstut front suspension, similar but not exactly the same as the Celica GT4.

...similar but not exactly the same as...

A by-word for 'scrap heap modding', on Toyyo :(

No. Im gonna need a hand with this one.

Didn't I grow up driving these on a PlayStation?

I seem to remember they were the perfect car, at least until your licence/wallet allowed you to get a skyline/ supra.

GLWS and all that.

... simply put.... Toyyo parts are not generally swappable across models/different years of same car.

Toyyo forums/speed forums have members who have learned 'what fits what'...  :-)

Toyo bits not swappable? I dunno about that.

Since getting the ls400 I'm rapidly becoming a Toyota fan and was looking at Rav4s and Celicas before buying a Peugeot from afar.

I'm now looking at this enviously. GLWS!

Most of the Levin's parts are not interchangeable with other Toyotas, not even the regular Corolla. The door handles and switchgear are, rear suspension, that's about all I can think of!

From the spec, and overall condition, that's far from spendy even by AS standards. NIce unusual car, I'm sure - and not, as I'd first thought, another Paseo variant.
