Forum gone a bit quiet...

I think people will be struggling to get back in if they don't know to clear their cache. If the DNS has changed then it should be fully propagated by now.

Whatever that is requires guests to log in, so it can fuck off.

116 registered users browsing the forums, including most of the serial flouncers, so I'd say it's business as usual.

Yea I still cant get in unless I go on some of my old history with a link that directs me to a thread or similar. How do i clear my DNS?

Exactly so it can also fuck right off (not aimed towards you FOAD). The same moaners from on here on there to moan about here. Ironic hey.

I don't get it - he and his tiny (if disproportionally vocal) minority jumped up and down until they got what they wanted, and yet that's still not good enough.

Anyway, if he really has gone let's not look a gift horse in the mouth, eh?

Back to the shite, I say.

I'll see what happens, I'm sure when everyone gets their frustrations out of their systems it'll become a bit better. I know few people have been getting fucked off with Autoshite recently. I thought a middle ground between here and the blue forum could be fun and maybe people would want something different to what's being offered here.

Anyway back on topic, we need some photos of the paintwork in question...

We do ^

But thought about roller and rustoleum ?

I once more offer photos of the car I painted with Rustoleum and a roller.

The sanding will make you want to die, and there will forever be an outline of your car in the location you do this.

It doesn't have "patina" really.... It just looks terrible.

Perfect for eBay 'RaT LOOOK NOT GOLF CUSTARDWORT V16 ESCROT TWUNT UNDERHEDCAMM CRAPI" ad then.

Remember to lower the suspension on one side and to invent a model / trim level first remove all punctuation and say "i am told" quite a few times if you can get the engine size changed on the v5 so that insurance is cheaper m8 that would be better also you should start with 2000 words on when the car was launched how many were made and how mr bertram dingley-faggot of west dangling in the forest bought it from "dodgy bastards" in 1764 ....

Easy.

It's true, the paintwork is horrible. Ok, not as horrible as the cracked, falling off paint as posted a bit further back, but it is still horrible.

I actually like satin black cars. I am possibly a sad person.

Your car mate, so do what you fancy :)

Scooters carry off satin black OK - I thought my old Xevo400 looked rather smart - but it looks grim on cars IMO.

Unless it's just the bonnet, of course 8)

It is just the bonnet at the moment.

The patchy look is just shadows/dust. Also the stick on the wheel has nothing to do with it.... The dog put it there, I didn't paint the bonnet with it!

The paint was like this beforehand. Boot, roof etc.

I was fucked off with Autoshite before it was cool to be fucked off with Autoshite.

Now Dave's out of the picture I might even donate. I offered some money to keep things going (and had found some expertise to maintain the forum) but the admins had it all in hand.

To be fair, I don't think anyone has "got what they want" seeing as what people wanted was a run down of the money situation, a confirmation or denial of an error with everyone's personal details and an acceptance of reasonable offers of help, or at the very least an explanation why help was so very unwelcome. I never saw or got the impression anyone was asking or wanting Dave to leave.

Personally I don't think any of that was unreasonable. I am often found saying to my kids "I have asked nicely several times and now my patience has run out, I'm shouty". Perhaps a lot of the ill feeling could have been saved if Dave answered the questions asked?

And I can't believe anyone thinks the technical side of running this place was going well. Yes it was voluntarily taken on, yes I don't doubt it was hard work but surely that's all the more reason to accept help when it's offered?

You can get a really good finish sometimes on Vans if you prepare it properly and use good brushes. There's a bit of a technique to doing it so you leave minimum brush strokes. You could easily paint the entire car for £20-25 if you use a decent enamel like Aldi Direct to metal paint.

Used this to repaint the sill on the Focus where there was a little surface rust, wanted a tough finish, you can't hardly see where I've painted it it looks factory.

I got an amazing finish with Plastikote rattle cans on the 2CV's wings. I wish I'd put more effort into prepping them now. I deliberately went for a satin finish, and am really glad I did. Shiny is meh.

what sort of prep does plastikote need

I want to tidy up the inner wings on that staaag. the cellulose handpainted over original paint 20 years ago has cracked and it chipped all over the place. and is covered in engine bay grime.

Will it cope with a degrease and pressure wash and then straight application or am I going to get a reaction that makes me wonder why I started?

As a guess and if you would like a better insight into what probabily happened and why the adversarial approach was never going to produce a satisfactory outcome.

I was never happy with Dave's approach, or his level of skill, or his book keeping. However, I would never wish ill health on anyone.

Has the dedicated server bought with donations been kept? If not, what's happening to it?

I don't think asking questions is unreasonable either. What left a bad taste in my mouth was the way a couple or three people thought it was OK to throw around accusations of fraud, or to call daveb47 a liar. None of this was ever backed up with anything beyond shouting, histrionics and further insults.

And I'm not saying our former webmaster covered himself in glory, either, with his refusal to accept help etc. But the way some people just kept pushing his buttons when they knew exactly what would happen saddens me a bit.

As this is a paint thread I will add that I've just taken delivery of 12 cans of Hycote satin black; when decent weather next avails itself I plan to do a bit of painting myself!

If you know something, Jon, maybe now's the time to tell us?

I think the dedicated server is a monthly billed remote web based hosting type thing, not an actual physical shiny computer in Dave's front room.

I fully agree.

Daveb47 did his best, whatever. Most of us, if not all of us know little about either him or his mental state. He may be autistic or be aspergic for all we know. Turning on him, as some did was a bit thoughtless and somewhat cruel. I for one don't think for a moment that he was just coining in donations. He was doing his best at something he felt he could do. IMHO.

Anyway... What are you painting with those 12 cans Strangeangel?

Hopefully Dave has passed on the NAS I sent him free of charge to use for AS forum backups to the new people running the site

It's true that we don't know his personal circumstances but by that very same token we don't know that he wasn't just a grumpy old control freak. I'm not saying he was of course but there are two sides.

I didn't see anyone accusing him of fraud or of being a liar. Maybe I missed that or maybe people are quick to see the question "what have you spent the money I donated on" as an accusation.

But it works both ways doesn't it? We know as much about Dave as we know about anyone, perhaps the people asking the questions asked in a way that got misconstrued? Perhaps I am too naïve to spot the undertones to what I saw as reasonable questions.

I just think it's a bit much to blame or celebrate the departure of some people while bemoaning the "unfair" treatment of another.

I also don't deny anyone else's differing view on the matter, I don't think I have anything else to add so will bow out.

I 'thanked' you before your response Louise, but the 'thanks' remains.

Nicely worded and a balanced response.
