If I click on 'open forums' at the top of the page I get the down message, but can access it through the other route via the forum home page.

Aye, right enough - that works for me too.

Thanks for your work.

Maybe it's time to get proper hosting though, the site has been up and down for ages - if the whole site is in one persons hands, anything could happen to it and I bet nobody wants to lose 10 years of quality shite postings.

Boredim set in so got the ex-Sigmund_Fraud veggie sipping  Megan MOT'd n on a Calais day trip then up the coast for  booze/fritte n mayo in Oostende before the forum arose again.  Dave-not-Dave you’re a Star.

Well done restoring service DB47, glad to see we're back cooking with gas again.

The .com links still don't work for me on my iPad. I thought the site was still down and I'm sure there will be many others thinking the same.

It was the 999 link that brought me here.

You need to clear your dns cache.

Well done, Dave.....I have had a cracking weekend out in the sun but still missed AS.   God knows what I would do on a wet weekend without it.....

What's the link for the other site when this one goes wrong?

Is it still squiffy or just me?

If I go directly to this page....

http://autoshite.com/forum/3-autoshite/

I get the main forum and can read, post etc, but front page, open forum etc just bring up the "SORRY...contact your wemaster" page or the beige "autoshite is unavailable" page.

Windows 7, Chrome, cleared cookies etc, logged out, logged in again....

Yup, same here. For the last 4-5 days all i've seen is the default cpanel webpage saying to contact webmaster@

Really dont know, just slowly failed over few days.

But DNS doesn't do that dave. The domain has been resolving straight to a cpanel server / account every single day so this was not a DNS issue (i've seen the same from both the PC and phone[4G]). It's a strange coincidence that all these things seem to happen once you set about another upgrade. I'm not slating you, I just wonder if you need help in doing these upgrades (sorry i can't offer - snowed under)..

Incidentally as you mention the DNS and you have a second site, why not just change the .com A record over to the backup site when the main site is buggered?

I'm getting that error as well if I accidentally click on the very left hand Autoshite in the forum links, summat aint right somewhere

Without in any way detracting from the excellent work done by Dave, I think that we should have a discussion about hosting and backups and so forth.  I would be prepared to pay a contribution to the cost of doing whatever techy blah might be necessary to ensure that precious postings from 2009 about the rusty boot floor in an Austin Maxi that has since been bridged are preserved forever.  This is pretty much up there with any UN World Heritage Project, so let's do it.

Realistically, not everyone is going to ante up for the cost, and some of us are less skint than others, but if anyone (a) has a clue what might actually be required (I have no clue); and/or (b is prepared to spaff a few quid on paying for whatever that may be, please shout out.

Been working on servers/forums of all sorts for many years, well over 10 anyway so not short of expertise.

Forum upgrade involves converting database to Utf8 coding and script tends to throw wobbly at slightest opportunity.

Re a record, have done this in past and then got flack from those who cant or dont know how to clear dns to recover to .com.

Can take days for it to resolve properly.

The dns problem lasted about a day & a half, before recovering,it is not unknown for dns to play up if a node or nodes are down somewhere, usually recovers itself when node comes back up.

This is what i think happened, but no way to prove it.

Re links at top, double checked & all are correct, also checked through proxy servers from all over the world and all seem to work fine.

Can all  those with problems, clear their dns,& let me know their device & browser so i can check out further

http://autoshite.info

is backup board but only online when this is down

You can always use http://fahl.us/test/

For emergency messages etc.

It is hosted, it is backed up. Dave has successfully rolled back a couple of times proving that the backups work, so I'm not sure what the complaints are about.

The recent issues mostly relate to an attempted upgrade. Unless you pay decent coin for fully managed hosting you're not going to get someone who will handle that kind of upgrade for you. And fully managed hosting comes with its own set of issues.

Cool your boots, guys.

With respect, how is it then that everytime we're informed of an upgrade, its guaranteed that the site will end up offline for several days. How does that happen?

If you played your cards right, it could be a nice little earner too as every time the site comes back, people celebrate your brilliance and start offering cash! I need to setup a motoring forum lol.

But that would not explain why we were seeing a stock cpanel page for a supposed DNS failure.

You need to set a shorter TTL for the domain then so that all those DNS servers that are caching the IP address don't cache it for as long as they do.

As i've said previously, do we really need to keep updating? - It only causes hassle each time and if a major ISP can go for nearly a decade without upgrading an old SMF forum then I'd be pretty certain we could survive..

Why don't you then? At least that way we'd be spared any more of your unhelpful whining.

Ipb are no longer supporting current version,it is end of life so no more patches to stop new hacks/exploits etc so upgrade to Ipb 4.1 at some point is inevitable.

Cerainly if you are happy for the possibility of board being hacked & all your email & other info being stolen then it can stay as it is.

Full backups are done every day first thing at over 30 gb at a time.

Most of the delay in reinstating board is uploading database to server, certainly 5-6 hours or more.

Server itself only takes an hour or so to rebuild & install Whm/cpanel

Cpanel error page shows because there is an error in the dns, either at internet level or on your pc & is almost certainly in your browser cache as our board is resolving fine.

I have no control over ttl as it is set at autoshite.com domain hosts which i have no access to except via third party.

I'm not happy at that thought obviously..but at the same time none of the other forums i frequent go down for so long or do so many updates. Autoshite is the only one that seems to do so (and it's obviously an annoyance because it's so flaming important!!!). You have no idea how empty my internet week has been this week - I was seriously glum without AS.

Cpanel couldn't have been caused by a dns issue but admittedly i'd forgotten about the browser cache possibly causing this so that probably solves that little mystery nicely..
