four wheel drive vans, recomendations or alternatives?

I am considering getting a 4 by 4 van so I can go down the rutted track to my lock up and save a few miles of tarmac, also I wont wake anyone up if I feel the need to stay there till late. I have been looking at mitsi delica which I can easily remove the seats out of. Are there any similar size vans in shite land?

I looked at those Delicas, briefly - vastly overpriced and with an appetite for headgaskets. Plus seem to be very popular with shaven-headed oafs who have too many kids to fit in an Impreza....Surely a regular 4x4 with the seats binned off would give pretty good space?I used to love the practicality of my old lwb land rover - pick up body with canvas tilt if you needed to keep the rain off.....or maybe seek out one of those 'county' Transit 4x4's - they are the shizz!

You'd need some deep pockets for one of the vee-dubya's. That sherpa however - schwing!!!!

They do a fake sprinter 4x4 in Russia or Czech, but I can't remember what it's called. Supposed to be good.

They did a Syncro version of the original LT van as well, according to my handbook (and the non-functioning diff lock lights on the dash). Never seen one over here though - think it may have been a Krautistan-only offering.

The UAZ is the business, although finding one let alone running one could be a headache. The VW Synchros were always expensive, by now they're shagged and expensive. Watch out for the owner who says "I've removed a front driveshaft cos it needs a CV joint" Does it bollocks, the diff is knackered and you've priced a new one  I can recommend a Land Rover, with its regular mud and snow tyres mine was fantastic in the snow earlier this year. For sale and everything  Watch for rust with old Land Rovers though

Mk2 LWB county transit, but I am biased.....

Have to agree, Though I'd opt for a Mk3 County as they are easier to get hold off, A local tree surgeon had one years ago and couldn't rave about it more!Although you might have more luck finding a Land Rover 110 Van TBH.

Ex Utility company LDV or whatever they are using these days would be my favorite. Drove a Bedford van one briefly during some time working with the Norweb Federation whilst out on line work (in another lifetime before I became a nurse) and they were pretty unfazed by anything in the fields we came accross. Probably not up to serious "off road, its gripped, its sorted" stuff, but certainly up to a muddy field without any issues.

Now that is quality!, Looks pretty clean as well for a Mk2!, Bet there not many of them left on the road anymore though.

Sadly that ones' not mine, it is tasty though. Had the best of everything when a previous owner worked for the RAF, so he raided the stores for parts and had it fully resprayed. It does see life though, witness the small dent on the back on where it slipped sideways down a ditch and hit a fence post. The fence lost. I remember an article in Commercial Motor years ago, a LWB Mk2 county against a 110 landy. The tranny won cos the landy grounded on a hump on the course, where as the tranny could get over it for the extra wheel base.

You get a million shite points if you buy one of these and use it as a 'daily':

Unimog FTW. My local council has a couple, they aren't half intimidating when they come up behind you in traffic!

some good replies here although my budget wont stretch to many of them, id love a unimog or the russian beast but in the real world has to be something I can get parts for in halfords etc. The VW sychro looks good but id be bidding against too many middle class surfer dudes with student loans or mummy and daddys cash. Ive had experience of land rovers when a mate owned a diesel series 2, nearly lost my hearing and it was apart nearly every weekend also im too lanky to drive them comfortably at 6ft 7. This rules out the sumo too. I may have to chance an L300 delica for my budget anyone here owned one?
