Taxed till you get home sir?

Am new to this.

Have bought more shite, its taxed at the moment but miles away.

I do not know the seller but they seem OK.

I could collect tomorrow, last day of month, or maybe next week which may be easier, they are not bothered.

Am thinking of SORN until March as I'm away much of February.

What do I ask the seller to do to cover the tax driving home?

Am assuming they just delay telling? or date next day? which would lose  them a month rebate if I buy tomorrow.

If its top secret pm me please.

Tax will not be a problem, even if the keeper change were to be recorded at the DVLA instantly the status online updates to 'tax due keeper change'. I assume that's when your grace period starts as you might be expected to tax it using the green slip. I sorned my Megane as soon as I got it home as I wasn't going to be using it until the winter.

I'm wonder how long is the grace period under the new double-tax no disc system?

I drove home without taxing the Rover as it was still showing as taxed. I txed it one day later... Hoping the grace period isn't that short!

The way I see it (which may be horribly wrong) is that if you're posting the V5 to the DVLA to inform them of the change of owner, it's taxed until they receive the V5 in the post.

Up until that point, the DVLA don't know it's changed owner, so on their system it's still taxed...

I always tax a car by the day after I've bought it, at the latest, though.

Yup. That's my take on it. If I need the 'tax to get you home' cover, I go for the old-fashioned paper V5 option.

You can setup a direct debit for tax on your phone though in about five mins. They send you a email confirmation as well. Thats what I have done the last few times.

When I bought the Omega off JohnK it was on a disabled tax disc, and whilst he was happy to delay with DVLA, I was planning an epic 900 miles over the next 5 days, so I bought a new none disabled tax disc from the post office on the last day of the month, as I didn't fancy explaining to a police officer, that "yes the car is insured in my name, no it's not my car, no I'm not disabled, I'm just borrowing it off a this lad called John's dad in Middlesbrough, to see if I like it, and I seem to have driven it to Cardiff to find out"

Actually I was more scared of my wife overhearing me, explaining that to a police officer, given that I have 3 points on my licence, and she's taken to screaming at me, if I go over the speed limit.

I drive it on the previous owners tax and check online and only tax once it shows unlicensed cos im a cheapskate pikey

^^ What he said. I make sure theres insurance in place but if theres a few days til the end of the month and its still showing as taxed from the previous keeper I'll wait it out!

I only really worry about insurance when picking up cars, MOT and road tax are optional, especially if its still showing taxed under the previous owner.  If its near the beginning of the month i'll tax it online when I pick it up, not paying a whole month for a couple of days though.  I don't know if there actually is a 'grace period' any more, but the DVLA will be getting paid up to the end of the month regardless, so fuck'em.

Gosh, you lot are law abiding aren't you.

A mate of mine recently bought a car, middle of the month, drove it home, safe in the knowledge that the seller would not be sending in the old v5  for a day or two. Parked it on the drive, did not drive it, tax it nor SORN it, until the new V5 had turned up in the post. Then waited a few more days - till a few days into the next month, before taxing it online.

Result?

During taxing it online, DVLA noted the gap in vehicle tax and showed the message 'an investigation into the gap in taxation may be conducted'. Nothing more was heard from the DVLA exactly as my mate's wife said it wouldn't.

Why? Their computer can only trigger an investigation if tax is outstanding for more than one month. Having missed renewing tax on a vehicle by more than a month, by accident, several times, she has only ever been asked to pay the outstanding tax to avoid a fine. And has been told when doing this, that the threshold is one month: for gaps of less than a month, the DVLA is toothless. Knowing this, she has missed paying one month's tax and paid the next month with, what's the word?, impunity. Obviously this is subject to not being pulled or caught by ANPR while driving around, but for a car that is not on the road, there's no risk of this.

Anyone else had similar information when playing catch-up on tax?

And before you ask, no, my mate does not take the same lax attitude towards insurance.

I'd love to know how the dvla can charge twice. If the car is bought mid month then PO gets no refund and new owner has to pay from start of month. Great system.

When the DVLA records the change of registered keeper on the system. FBHVC had a beef with Swansea and apparently any earlier goes against SOGA.

You can say 'it changes instantly' but its computers don't move that quick.

Thing is, you don't know exactly when it will enter the system.

We have to pay 2 months tax on the Zafira because the v5 was sent off last week. No way out of it, it came up on the last page... Even if I waited until tomorrow I guess I would have had to pay the same... Wouldn't I?

Not too fussed though as amys paying it...

This has not changed , hthis was the case   under the paper system if the seller took their VED  out to get it  refunded ...

That's the point though, it only happened if the seller kept the disc, which they would only realistically do if the car was being SORNed or the tax was a different class. Whereas now it happens with every single sale.
