Timewaster Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 There's no way to turn the Sony beep off. RAGE. I want a Bluetooth head unit that doesn't look pants and doesn't cost a fortune, any recommendations? I forgot to mention the shit Alpine Bluetooth sometimes skips and drops connections, not something replicated tethered to OEM systems so it's not my phone. They're is a way but it way but it is about 15 button presses to find the right menu.
dave21478 Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Pretty much every car I have owned has come with a gaping hole in the dash with a handful of wires and a couple of scotchlocks dangling out, so I buy second hand stereos from my local cashconverters type place. Ever since I was a shop monkey for Halfords in the 90's I have been a fan of Alpine and Kenwood stuff. Alpine seems a little blingy these days, but the Kenwoods I tend to buy are quite sober. My main gripe is the buttons are too small on all of them. I have no CDs and radio here is ear-cancer so they have to have USB or SD card inputs.

Hendry Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 The good thing with slightly more modern cars like my 09 Jetta (VW are stingy bastards, top spec trim on a 2009 car and no steering wheel controls when 2nd from base model Astra and Focus of the same era have them, but yet you get stuff like rain sensor wipers) is you can fit stereos from higher spec Golfs or optional extra stereos with DAB, Bluetooth, and USB functions, and they look factory because they are OEM. Hate single din stereos in a car that was designed with a double din. Only thing is needing to swap steering wheels for the steering wheel controls as VW unlike other manufacturers don't use the same steering wheels between cars with/without steering wheel audio controls, so you can just swap the blanks for the buttons like Ford/Vauxhall.
LessThanEqual Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I don't mind my Kenwood handsfree bluetooth one. RGB LEDs with brightness settings, this is on max. Only problem is that it's piano black. I hate piano black. Bonus EML, being a VAG it shows that it's working correctly*. alcyonecorporation 1
Timewaster Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Maybe on some but not on my last one.Well every one I have come across has a beep on/off option and I used to sell and fit them for a "living" but I will say it is never in the same menu and defaults back on every time the constant live is disconnected. See my earlier post about them pissing me off. Lacquer Peel and alcyonecorporation 2
SiC Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I remember an alpine unit I had in a mk1 mx5. The stupid thing never had a obvious power button. If I remember correctly, you held the source button or something to turn it off. Pushing the volume button changed between balance/fader/etc.

See my earlier post about them pissing me off. The Sony "beep on /off" function is in the settings menu somewhere, but thats only for the beep with every button press, which is massively aggrivating and always gets switched off. What I believe LP and others including myself want is a way to switch off the triple beepoo beepoo noise it makes every time you switch the ignition off. As far as I am aware, its not possible. Lacquer Peel, alcyonecorporation, barefoot and 1 other 4
tapir Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Period looks in a modern stereo:- Continental http://bavarianretro.com/blog/?p=380 do you happen to know who makes these as I'm assuming they are just re-badged?
Pillock Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Does the Sony triple beep come out of the speakers, or the head unit itself? If the latter, five minutes with a screwdriver should see the sounder liberated from the PCB.

Pete-M Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I think it is the more modern Sony jobs which allow that annoying beep to be switched off. Back in the mid 90s I worked at a VW dealership, almost every car there had a Sony stereo which did that annoying bleep thing. Those awful jobs with the D-Bass rotary switch. alcyonecorporation, saucedoctor and overrun 3
Vince70 Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I have an old grey Sony from the 90s in a E36 and on the led display it has a dog running across the screen when you turn it on... I just wondered if someone knows why Sony would go to all that effort to program a stereo to do that.. Lacquer Peel and alcyonecorporation 2
barefoot Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I have an Xplod, bought to replace an old Pioneer in the 944, essentially because it was black. Sadly, the triple switch off bleep ensures that I will never buy another SONY anything.
BavarianRetro Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 do you happen to know who makes these as I'm assuming they are just re-badged?No. I looked for them on alibaba etc., but couldn't find them. All the documentation is branded Continental. For a while, I was buying them from a retailer in Germany who wound supply them cheaper than Continental UK, but they got their act together eventually. They do one with blue illumination too, badged as VDO. tapir 1
sierraman Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I have a genuine Phillips set a la Cavalier or Rover 200 with code if any absolute lunatic wants it. I'm hoping so because the several addresses I've hauled it round over the last 15 years have been a waste of time. It's a cassette one with a LOUD button. Has the code but no connectors. Free but you pay the colossal postage of £3.

barefoot Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Caut alm, does that feature in the menu of the Xplod?
Noel Tidybeard Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 the above is for an Sony mex-bt 4100 whilst it does have an xplod setting for the eq iirc it dont say explod on unit
dave21478 Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Hmmm, mine definitely doesnt have that option. The triple beeps are a reminder to remove the faceplate when you park the car, but since its not 1997 anymore, nobody every does this. Frankly, I am surprised that manufacturers still bother making them removable. You can pre-empt the beeps by pressing the release button before you turn off the engine, but just leaving the facia on its latch. Remember before face-off stereos, some would slide the whole stereo out of its mounting frame? Did anyone ever see anybody ever carrying a Goodmans around with them at the pub or shopping? ruffgeezer Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 The worst one I had was in the C15 I sold to @Wilko220. It was a very high spec JVC that as I recall used to change the volume up on its own and trying to turn it down just made it louder.
saucedoctor Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Did anyone ever see anybody ever carrying a Goodmans around with them at the pub or shopping? Yours truly! In my defence, it was a Sharp, and was pretty pricey at the time (£130-ish in 1992/3)
Timewaster Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Remember the kits that turn a non removable stereo into a removable one. Hack the dash an extra 1/4" to fit the sleeve. Fit your stereo into the box, fit the box into the sleeve. Punch the stereo every time you go over a bump and it goes off. Swear that you can only get BBC local radio and radio 3 now.Never actually take it out anyway. Richard and AMC Rebel 2
Pete-M Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 The most annoying stereo I've ever had in a car was a Kenwood 'Mask'. Nice stereo, sounded good, it was one of those ones where the stereo face plate rotated when ignition was switched off leaving a blank space instead of radio controls. Great when it worked. Not so good when the face part lost the plot. This meant that although the front panel would swing into place and illuminate as it should, the controls on it didn't work. For 18 months the only music playing in my car was Simon and Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park. CD was stuck in the stereo couldn't eject it, track search or adjust the volume. It's a good job I still love that album. Oh, I am the person who still takes the stereo face plate out of the car at night. Vince70 and saucedoctor 2
Richard Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 I had one like that, Ministry of Sound brand IIRC. AMC Rebel 1
AMC Rebel Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 I bought my sis one of the removable front stereos after some scrote nicked her radio. They stole the unit anyway. I think she still had the faceplate for years. I have 3 with removable fronts but never bother now even 90s Fords had that flip out panel with a few of the buttons on. In the 70s my uncle gave up locking his Triumph 2000 in London so that they didn't have to smash the window to steal his radio Lacquer Peel 1

A handy reminder, when people used to rob HU's with face plates in situ. The OEM NATSy thing in my dad's old 05 Terrano required you to press 'ON' to turn it on and off. :/
tooSavvy Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 ... my 'Cassette Adapter' flopped thru the letterbox earlier..... When I'm next in the car I will give it all a whirl... TS
