Bloody Rovers and head gaskets, pffft. You don't catch Japanese engines going wrong I tell you

It's a steep learning curve, but you'll learn a lot and have a decent car to show for it at the end.

Had similar issues with my first car. 2cv obv which had leaking heads and half a piston on one side despite a new mot.

Gave me carbon monoxide poisoning with the fumes leaking out! Well I was violently sick and had a pounding headache.

Excellent work Ghostbusters!  When it's done and you're cruising around in your perfect runner, post the old head gasket through the seller's letterbox

By the time you've fixed it, you'll know the cause, symptoms and resolution of rover hgf, and will, in time buy many, many more, and become a proper chod botherer!

You'll have this one stashed in a barn somewhere after a few year though, as it's your first

Sorry to ruin the mood but I'd post all the parts you take off through the cnut's letterbox that sold it knowing full well it was shite.

All that time, effort and money replacing the water pump and then using silicone sealant, just why?

BECAUSE NOBHEAD.

Great work Ghosty, it really is going to make the next Northern Powerhouse at this rate  :-D

Are you suggesting the water pump was stuck on with ectoplasm?

Progress has slowed down slightly. The head is back on and torqued down (Old Man checked it over, was fine). But the tensioner spring for the cambelt is missing. B&Q, Halfords, ECP and the local factors all don't stock anything big enough, and a new cambelt tensioner doesn't come with one (and it's £40), so it's off to teh_interwebs. Waiting for the PAS and alternator belts too as the only ECP that was open yesterday couldn't get them until Tuesday earliest. Could be finished by the end of the week, though.

I have a friend who has a 216i race car and asked where you managed to get your head gasket from at short notice?

Old Man has found the spring lying about in the bowels of the engine so the only thing stopping the car working now is the fact I'm working 10 til 10 (effectively) every day this week.

Six-cylinder: it was thegasketshop.net. They have an eBay shop too.

For my D-series, it was about £33 delivered within two days, for rocker cover, both manifolds, HG, spark plug bore holes in the rocker cover, and a couple of other bits I'm not quite sure what they do.

Top stuff going on here.  Looking forward to you having the time to actually drive it and give us that first post-driving-about report.

Skin acts as a container.    Your blood wouldn't be exposed to the vacuum.

Sorry but the words 'space' & 'death' always combine to make this in my head

BTW, well done finding the spring Ghosty's dad. That's the sort of part I can be looking for all day.

Good job Ghosty, I have bought many crocks that needed serious attention after I thought they was ok. Will be a ace little motor when done. Top Work!!

Not sure whether I shall "like" the posts regarding the borked head gasket, because frankly, the whole thing is a bit shit.

But OMGHGF merely four miles into oh so reliable Japanese engine ownership has an element of hilarity, I just can't help it.

So once everything is back together, let's have a laugh about what breaks next.

Good job with this, it took me about a month to do my Dolomite 1300's head gasket, admittedly at a leisurely pace...

What about that Evans waterless coolant? No water = no steam = no pressurisation. Or something.

Anyone tried it?

Yup, a buddy of mine did during the summer. Rebuilt 4.2 straight 6 jag engine with about 10 thousand on it..........It started to leak at every single pipe joint on the engine, heater matrix even the temp sender. It searches like fook and we couldn't cure the leaks, then it even found its way past the head gasket. Some research revealed special sealants required and on some engines the head skimmed and block decked to super fine finish..............AVOID.
