The photo of it outside the dealership with the wonky plate...

Do not understand the grim, woeful, shonky comments. It looks quite solid and smart for a Merc from the second half of the nineties, compared with many I've seen. Just a little honest corrosion to let you know the car is 20 years old and hasn't been bodged up (more than once).

Has even a smallish amount of visible rust become as unacceptable as being overweight, in mainstream Americano-swilling modern Britain?

Obviously the subframe could be held on with isopon and the front springs about to break free from their rotten restraints, but the only mention of corrosion (slight) in its online history is a brake pipe.

Wow.  If that doesn't feature in next year's calendar - probably posthumously - I shall show my bottom in Burton's window.

It's lonely and it wants to be loved, just like everybody else does.

Hopefully it's solid, but it certainly looks shonky.  The ideal combination.

Yeah, totally the right combo. I think I must be too used to seeing rust.

The rust is almost guaranteed to be just surface shit - same is happening with FATHA'S C200 estate. We're just rattle-canning the fuck out of it, if it gets too bad.

I think that colour was a mega expensive option.

Cleaning up the fusebox contacts has brought the electric front windows back to life, and I thought I was winning. Right up until when this morning the digital clock went on on the blink and revealed that ageing German electrical systems always have the last laugh.....

That dealership photo is class, its the jaunty angle of the plate that makes it. Well* bought.

Always liked these for the perfectly rational reason that the parents of a super hot girl I went to school with had one when they were brand spanking new.......

Hers was resale silver, yours is a far far better colour. and +1 for the dealership photo, awesome

I am just hoping the last part of that comment doesn't refer to your bottom

Good effort. I bought the worst c250 turdblowing diesel in the country a few years ago.

I didn't know it at the time sadly.

Given that Skizzer has a Rancho, I for one am prepared to love his bottom.  Does that make me a bad person?

As for the Merc, it is truly wondrous to see such levels of grot on a 90s deluxe* motor.  Autoshite verdict: Jawohl, mein Fuehrer.

That's obviously a fake Mercedes made in China from re-cycled Fiats, no quality German product would ever have a number plate at that angle! :) Well bought. Have you read the thread on Pistonheads by the Mercedes mad guy that has restored his Merc estate? He has an SL 500 as well and he uses them lots and doesn't want to replace them so has bought EVERYTHING new from MB. It's a jolly good read.

As a self confessed Mercedes Licker , i would just like to say, Well Bought that Man. These old W202 C Class Mercs are good old cars, Yes they rust, but no where near as bad as a Ford. My mum has not long got rid of her old 2008, 08 plate ford focus 1.6 badermatic, & i swear, if you had seen the underneath of it, it was getting alarmingly crispy underneath   . So, a bit of surface rust here & there on the Merc is nothing.

Also, That dealer picture is Class.  Can i save it as my screen saver?

TADTS.   I got a new ribbon from some bloke in Scotalnd to try to fix mine, got the temp going but the clock is still knacked.   Verdict: not worth the hassle, after all what difference does it make?

Ah, good point - it doesn't, but I can see how that would read rather strangely if you're not very familiar with The Smiths.

And speaking of Morrissey, that's enough about my arse.

Is that the W124 they displayed in Merc World for a while after it ticked over 300k or some such number?

Yes the very one! He is as OCD about his Mercs as I am about... other things :)

I did like that thread & how he planned every milestone mileage photo to have 124 on the tripmeter.

Does anyone fancy this? Due to a new years resolution that I already broke by buying it, it is now for sale. mot till end of march. 172K with all the original books including the service book with full history to 2011 or thereabouts. Ive just done an oil and filter change and given it a repalcment bonnet star. Despite the surface grot on some panel edges, its actually quite a decent old thing. Ive checked the underside including the front sprint perches and subframe mounts and it seems sound. Its better underneath than on top! Everything works, including 'tempomat' aka cruise control although the aircon is a bit weak. The interior is freshly valetted and is clean and tidy, with the drives bolster unusually not holed. (will post upo more pics later) has a sony headunit with remote control and usb connection. Oddly it has no rear headrests. It drives really well. although theres a very slight vibration over 80 which feels to me like a wheel that wants balancing. As its a facelift model its got the merc 5 speed auto. The tyres are all ok treadwise with fairly recent michelins on the front. Shiters price £200.

Could be interesting.  Look forward to seeing some pics of interior especially.
