My shite FB Victors

Recommended Posts

Looked at this forum off and on over a few years, decided to join it as I am in possession of two pieces of shite: 1963 and 1964 Vauxhall FB Victors, one of each type (i.e. one 1500, one 1600/facelift; both saloons). More pictures and more detailed descriptions to follow

Welcome along, I can't even recall seeing one of these at a show, can't be many around.

I do however have my dads old Dinky model example 😀

Very nice to see.

That burgundy one looks familiar was it featured in a mag a while back ??

These look great. Keep us updated with lots of updates please

Welome. I had one of these that had strange part-cast part-tin brake drums. Worryingly wobbly but worked OK. Did I dream it or have yours got this weight saving feature?

I like FBs.  Dad had an estate NML925 in the UK, then BL670B in Germany.  It was white with a dark green roof, had a distinctive exhaust note and smelt of vinyl.

Used to know a bloke called Paul, Kolkata, from Shere in Surrey who rebuilt FB estates- owned several .

Did a proper nice job too.

Don't think I've seen any others since.

Welcome. You will fit right in, here.

I had a look at buying a 1500 estate version of one of these a fair while ago. It was the lack of seat belts that put me off in the end.

In other exciting FB news, a mate's dad had one when we were back at school, it rode really smoothly and we all sunk into the soft seats.

Odd thing was, when chap changed gear, it felt like we all sat completely upright for an instant and then sank back again.

Totally Bizarre!

I had a 63 FB in 73. Three speed box, column change.

Had to put 4 speed box in so it would tow a trailer up a hill without using bottom gear.

Had quite an hole where the floor should be and the chassis moved an inch each way with the steering box.

Haven't seen one for ages, I did own an estate one years ago, but remember very little about it.

IIRC Danny Hopkins had it ( or one very much like it) in his earlier time at PC ( Around 2000 ish?) I think he had a bit of a problem with the sills having been creatively repaired in years gone by. #magazine anorak

I have a vague memory of that - in my recollection he paid a decent whack from a dealer then found the sills were mostly newspaper - but he had to take it on the chin as no-one knew who did the bodge.

Welcome to the madhouse!

Not a Victor but a VX 4/90, whist I don't own a GM mobile I share your delight in Luton made products :)

Many thanks for all your interest and replies --- here's a little more info on the cars: maybe I'll concentrate on the "better" one for now

The black Victor is a 1964 (but reg'd 1965) 1600 Deluxe with three on the tree, and looks shite because a previous owner hand-painted it --- it was originally Cactus green

...that's not my car, but shown here to illustrate the original colour

My car as bought, November 2015:

Hand-painted red stripes and tinted window film make it look even more shite, but I've already removed some of the other shite additions such as the headlamp peaks which don't suit an FB, the spotlights which killed the electrical system every time they were switched on, the additional and wrong Vauxhall badge on the grille and those weird tooth-like front overriders (which I think were actually some sort of bathroom fitting). The stick-on VICTOR letters and pike nuts which "replaced" the proper grille badge were binned, as was that home-made HISTORIC sticker on the bootlid... The rear overriders are not of the correct profile, and I'd like to find some correct FB ones front and rear

The car was MoT'd and driveable when bought, but I took it off the road to do some minor repairs --- they have turned into major repairs of course, but underneath all the shite it's actually quite a sound car and well worth keeping

Less than 200 still on the road in the UK apparently, so spares are a problem. I also have two Dinky estate, one of which I'm slowly converting into a saloon...

I don't think my burgundy FB is the one featured in a magazine, but it may look familiar because there are images of it out there on the internet

I've not had the front wheels off yet, so have no idea about the makeup of the drums --- when I was using the car the brakes seemed adequate, but I recently broke an FC Victor 101 which had front discs, so they'll be going on my black FB (with an FB VX 4/90 servo fitted)

My father had a 1500cc estate in circa 1971, and yes, that exhaust note and vinyl smell were very familiar when I acquired my two FBs... I also drove a 1600 saloon in 1981/2, which is why I wanted to buy one in more recent times

Welcome. You will fit right in, here.

I'd love to own an estate, but they're either very expensive or very rusty these days...
