What happens if you AVOID an accident?

That's fine if you can take a £300 or whatever hit this side of Christmas. It's not the OPs problem if someone causes an accident and they lose their job over it.

You've summed up the modern mentality.

"I know my rights."

"Not my job."

"Not my problem."

Etc.

No I haven't. I don't see why someone should cause an accident and financial loss for another person and that person should be expected to take it on tha chin. As has been said, shit happens- If it were a small amount of damage then fair enough but in this case it sounds like the car may be a total write off.

Where would you draw the line? A dent in a wing? Car damaged beyond repair? A few days in hospital?

The driver won't lose his job over this, unless.

There might be another scenario entirely and the driver is an incompetent twat, has members of the public phoning in regularly to complain and has an accident of some sort every other month.

So our mate pays out of his own pocket for damage caused by someone else, yes it's happened to us all and will again without doubt, but taking it on the chin or up the arse time after time does wear bloody thin after a while.

However, as mentioned much earlier, get a cheapish dash cam, bus boss viewing that footage could then either write you a check and give his driver a deserved bollocking or tell you see you in court if your driving wasn't helping things along in his view.

One thing is definite- if the insurance company hears of it you'll get humped on your renewal, regardless of fault. They aren't interested in how careful you are, only how lucky you are.

Suck it up and DIY fix if you can.  You're on extremely shaky ground with no video evidence and no actual collision with the bus driver.  The onus of proof will be strongly on you, and rightly so.

I feel your rage...but this is basically a non-starter, the very best possible outcome is knock-for knock and even that's unlikely, better to get it sorted without insurance being brought into it than spend the next 5 years declaring and paying for it at each renewal.

TALK TO THE BUS COMPANY...Worst case they say no and you're no worse off than before you asked.

Poison the water supply of the town where the bus company is located, etc (if that is the same town as where you live you'll need to move house first obvs)

Times like this when you wish you had a camera.

Get a camera, invaluable nowadays.

Talk to the bus company, everybody saying don't bother and just take it think what could have happened had your family been walking down the footpath the OP hit the kerb on avoiding going into the bus. In the split second to react to avoid a collision I very much doubt anybody would have time to check their collision avoidance path is clear especially if the view is now blocked by another vehicle.

Worst case scenario is they don't pay up but the bus driver gets a talking to and hopefully doesn't do the same again.

In my book £300 is still a lot of money I obviously need to earn more.

And if you still feel a grieved may I recommend nuclear bombardment from space as the only way to be sure?

NAME AND SHAME

Seriously, it may be a company I know/know of. If I know them I may be able to have a word.

Sorry OP, this isn't going to help you, but the actions of mongtards who manage to get licences still rankles.

Many moons ago an absolute prick came out of a side street, at speed, on my left when I was on a main road.  Absolutely no chance of not hitting him even with full fuckshitfuckshit emergency braking, so while doing the big cadence braking, swerved to the right to avoid killing him.  Seconds later I'm out the car (Mark III Cortina, showing age of incident, not classy collecting) surveying the OSF mashed into a lamppost and helpful bystanders giving me both consolation and the reg number of the car they had seen causing and driving off from the crash.

In my youth, called the police - no mobiles then - and even though it was Christmas Eve afternoon, they turned up within half an hour.

They took five minutes to hear everyone and then charge me with careless driving.  At my protests the cop said, and I quote, "If this ever happens to you gain, hit the fucker."

After all these years and hundreds of thousands of miles under my belt, survival instinct and common sense has never allowed me to follow that, "advice" and to add insult to injury, I got a bill from the council for the replaced lamppost (which, 35 years later, isn't replaced and still carries the battle scars).

Part of the reason I dont have a dashcam is because i have to take evasiave action at least once every journey I take. Friday gone was the best, went into Birmingham and I must have had 5 or 6 close calls, 1 woman in a burka changing lanes and the rest taxi drivers.

With a dash cam it would be so fucking tempting to ram into the side of your shiny new motor. in saying this I do believe that it's a natural reaction to avoid an accident.

No I haven't...

Yeah, fair enough.  My comment was a bit hasty and I retract that.  But I stand by my earlier one.

As for where I would draw the line, I don't know, but it would be over three hundred quid (and I'm not a rich man, before you say it).

My Volvo S40 was my favourite car I've ever had (sheltered life, I know) but it was effectively written off by someone who then immediately legged it.  Yeah, it does stick in the craw, but I'd rather be philosophical about it.

Sure, give the bus company a call, but unless it's a small firm I doubt they'll be able to do anything outside of a formal insurance claim.  Maybe I'm a pussy, but personally, I'd just concentrate on getting the car fixed and move on.

The driver won't lose his job over this...

I wouldn't be so sure.  Some firms/bosses are arseholes these days.

Having a fault-accident is at least a written warning where I work, regardless of severity (could be a smashed tail lamp).  Not reporting it straight away could push that up to a final.  If he's already on a warning and his manager needs to trim the books...

Posted

If he hasn't reported it, bearing in mind the car's bolloxed, then his boss needs to find another driver because it's almost certain that a phone call of complaint or claim was going to follow.

Any event which could be misconstrued or twisted should a third party do so, and we all know they do, i ring in immediately, and then complete an incident report when i get back.

It builds trust, my word is good enough where i work because if i fuck up i put me hand up straight away.

The firm understand that fuck ups happen once in while, what they don't want is a phone call or claim arriving out of the blue and them not knowing anything about it, that will result in tea and biscuits.

I suspect an at fault would result in a written warning where i work, and yes they have sacked one recently such an event, was a bad un mind, but that's usually the final straw when the person has been the cause of constant problems and in reality maybe should have been dismissed long ago due to seriously unsafe things, bearing in mind we use pressure blowing tankers and you don't want clots effing about like billie whizz with those.

At the risk of appearing to be a pendant, you didn't avoid an accident. You had an accident and your motor car is broken, you just managed to miss the 'other' vehicle in favour of a kerb. Bus driver appears to have been pleasant enough from your words. IMO you've nothing to lose by calling the bus company. They can only say no.

Good luck.

The bus company were nice enough but say it has to be dealt with via insurance. Im not risking the claim going against me for the sake of a few hundred quid, so im just going to have to bite the bullet and wear it.

Not ideal a few weeks before xmas but thats life.

On a 75 and something of that age, a broken mirror would result in a write off sadly. Which is a bit of a fucker. What work does it require?

Posted

Front strut, suspension arm...tyre.. wheel ideally.... drivers seat ( airbag went off in it) the airbag ECU and sensor.

Its not the end of the world but it is a pain. I can put off the seat etc until after xmas as its MOT'd til June but the rest I'll need to do.
