Unfortunately I think that old giffer specials will be the bulk of what goes to the crusher - savings interest rates are 9/10ths of bugger all at the moment, so they'll probably bring their decision to change motor forward. As such, their perfectly usable, stereotypical 10+ year old, 25k mile Civic/Corolla will get cubed under the scheme, whereas it could have provided many more years of motoring to someone else.

Though I see it really affects new registrations that year more than existing high polluters (so Wuvvum need not panic just yet with his Kia-ora Magentis!).Given that Britain is still home to manufacturers (if in final build rather than spirit...) like Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Land Rover, methinks they need to review their ranges!

Well, that's me proven wrong then. It appears it is financially prudent to give away large amounts of tax payers cash to foreign car manufacturers after all. This makes me consider doing something daft too, such as voting Conservative from this point onwards.

Yeah actually, why does there need to be a car scrapped? Why can't the government just give me £2000 and say "sort a car out"?

because this would directly help the punter, who nulabour couldn't give a toss about, not bolster the economy by getting the punter into more debt and shift a shiny tin box.bollo x innit? :roll:

Another thing to bear in mind is that the scheme is optional for the dealerships. Also they have to stump up one grand of the two grand discount, so it's actually not as attractive to the dealer as it looks. If it's only a grand, I would like to bet any dealer would give you that off without scrapping your car.....

It'll be bloody popular if scrap prices take off again! Though if the market is being flooded with scrappers, that's not very likely...

As I understand it, its upto manufacturers to decide if they want to join in or not. Now for most manufacturers it is probably the smaller, cheaper cars that would benefit most in terms of increased sales from this. And it is those same small models that they haven't got a massive margin on in the first place so are hardly likely to want to hack another £1000 off the 'list' price.And if the manufacturers do join the party, they have to offer the scheme on their full range. So say FIAT would have to offer £1000 off everything including the new 500 which they currently won't / don't need to discount.You can see the wheels falling off this scheme already.The other thing is, the government don't care whether it works or not, you get the impression they know they will be dumped out of office come the general election and just hope that things are in such a bad way that whoever 'wins' doesn't have the ability to turn the whole economic shambles around so that Nu Labia get elected back in in 2015 or wwhenever.Either way, they are all cunts.

Hmm... not as bad as it could of been, but I can see loads of good stuff being wasted.If it had been a few months sooner, my mum woulf have bought a new var rather than a 3yr old 206 and her 20k Metro would have gone. The old lady who I bought my Mini from bought a brand new Ford Ka when she sold it, and I'm sure that would have been cubed. She had it from new in '81 and it's still done less than 40k.So that would have been 2 just from my little world, over the country there will be thousands...

Every cloud has a silver lining. The prospect of a Hyundai I10 for a net £4795 means that the few remaining Accents will have achieved cult status by this time next year. 8)

This gets less credible as time goes on - Toyota has announced it will only offer the scrappage incentive on the Auris so no discounts on Yaris, IQ and Aygo which would presumably have been quite popular on this scheme not to mention being lower CO2 emiters and therefore 'green'.In trying to justify this and in what must be one of the weakest excuses ever, Toyota said

While Toyota has some of the best small cars on the market in the shape of Aygo and Yaris, we recognise that small cars do not meet the needs of everyone in terms of space and practicality

So really they just don't want to discount small stuff but as the Auris isn't selling that well then heres a really cynical way to boost sales.

I thought that if they were in the scheme, it had to be all or nothing. Looks like it's a bit pick and mix, some dealers won't be in it, some will be in it but only with some models. They want it all don't they?

About the cars needing an MOT. Any car with an MOT might not be road worthy, and even if it ran when it had the test, doesn't mean it does now! :lol: It might have to have an MOT, but where does it say it has to have running gear, let alone wheels.....On that note, how many dealers know how to get a car through it's MOT? Do the government actually see the cars? I would like to bet no.

This is already boiling my piss.Last night I saw the Citroen scrappage scheme advert. I'm a Citroen geek through and through, but it annoyed me to watch that advert with the emphasis on the word "scrappage". Today there's a Fiat advert on Yahoo email: "Scrap your old car.... and receive a Government Incentive + Fiat Bonus. -(minus) old bangers, + money for you" used to advertise Fiat Panda Active Eco at £4995.It makes me have fantasies about going on a save a shitter spree on eBay. Maestro, yes please. Volvo 340, no problem; L reg Mondeo, yup; Avenger, thankyou please; Alpine, step this way! etc.. Not going to happen if I value my relationship :!: ... but I can dream anyway :lol: Are all these cars bound to go straight to the crusher "in toto" or are they supposed to be dismantled of all useable parts first, then the shell weighed in? I am trying to convince myself that most owners of 10 year old cars won't be able to afford a new car, so they will be safe, but can't help remembering it was said on another forum that when this scheme came in in RI it was carnage. Now the roads are virtually devoid of older cars, and remember the rolling exemption still exists there, so they are coming here to buy cars that qualify!

I agree - my car plus £5K for a Fiat Uno or whatever - Pfrtttt, not going to happen, hell £5K is about my limit spend on the wifes luxo-new-barge-people-carrier.Me, spend money on a car to use for work? Nahh, I would be worried about it - wheras now if mine gets knocked or whatever I really dont care.

Now the roads are virtually devoid of older cars, and remember the rolling exemption still exists there, so they are coming here to buy cars that qualify!

In Ireland it was done at the same time as the introduction of the MOT, so a lot of really unroadworthy vehicles were got rid of.They are really only interested in RWD 'rally' or classic stuff TBH - they're not buying 1984 Cavaliers.

Not sure. In the Fatherland they're supposed to cube them whole, but out in the sticks the smaller yards (who have been doing VERY well from it...) will sell a few bits.But you can't buy the whole car. I've seen clean '98 Passats in a big pile of other stuff. Madness.

Here's a thought, there's an opening here for someone with a bit of patter and who knows the trade. People come to you with their car, you haggle 2k off the car they want for them, and take their car in payment. The car is saved, the buyer gets a deal, and the dealer sells a car. RESULT! I feel an ebay ad coming on...... :lol:

Another thing - if they get cubed/fragged, what was the point roughly 20 years ago, of making all the plastics have the little recycle mark on them so that they could be recycled correctly, thus saving the environment? This isn't going to help the environment as much as they're bullshitting it will.

Just got a letter from my MP, he seems unimpressed with this "gimmick" and would much rather we "foster a more responsible attitude of repair and reuse wherever possible" and use parts from component manufacturers to "repair existing vehicles rather than build new.....to be more environmentally responsible" even if this means the employment gains are not as large.So they aren't all mad!

Who is this person? I would vote for them for Prime Minister. Can they bring back rolling tax exemption as well?
