MG3 - Not shite it seems - now with excellent* video!

These MG3's always look slightly gawky in photos, but always much better in the flesh IMO. The problem they have is, although the RRP appears good value, most new cars are sold on a monthly payment, and the low residual value and competitive PCP offers from the competition allow much better cars to be sourced for the same deposit/monthly outgoing.

A top spec MG 3Style can be had for £169 pm with just under £1700 deposit. Based on 10k pa over 36 months.

A top spec Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo 1.2 TSI can be had under the same terms for £179 pm despite listing at £5000 more.

The Monte Carlo has a ridiculous interior trim, but is larger, costs £20 to tax (as apposed to £130), uses less petrol, has 5 star EuroNCAP rating rather than 3, a large dealer network, and quite a bit more street cred.

I was impressed with it when I first saw one at Knockhill a few years back, much better put together that i'd been lead to believe anyway. Also meant to be a hoot to drive spiritedly as well. Added with the fact you see none of them on the road and most folk dont know MG still exist, it's an oddball choice I like.

Very nearly got one as well for that reason but the nearest dealer is about 100 miles away, and that is also the only service center. Wheres the Abarth dealer was 70 miles away, but can be serviced at the nearest Arnold Clark dealer. and I managed to get finance on a silly cheap 595.

Then in typical fashion, Arnold Clark got the rights to be an MG franchise a few months ago.

Yes, im comparing a Abarth & MG3 together...  :?

I will reserve judgement on the MG3 until I actually experience one as a driver or passenger, but having seen several on my travels, I think they look really good in the right colour and decal combination. I particularly like the octagon-shaped Mod 'target' that one can specify for the roof :)

just had a look on Autotrader at 6es , they're not as cheap as same age Insignias.

Says as much about Insignias......

All Vauxhalls etc.....

Alex - and the Fabia is a pretty decent steer too. Well, the last one was. Assume the new one is still good. Bit less quirky to look at though.

Had a fantastic run out to Hereford today, where I confirmed that the handling really is very good. Grips far harder than I'm willing to push, the downside being that when you really push on, you get a whiff of screenwash...

800 miles this week now, and it's still a pleasure to hop into.

Thanks for the review DW, nice to have some idea of what they're like from some that's driven one for more than 5 minutes.

I don't really have an opinion on the car really. Looks like a lot of other modern stuff, I'm sure it'll be OK to drive (as in feel like a car made after 1992) and it will be thrown away just like any other car good or bad. At the end of the day any car is generally better than walking.

A 3 overtook me on the motorway yesterday, spotlessly clean in grey, it looked really rather nice and neat.

My wife's current plan for her BINI is to GIVE it to our Youngest when she finishes university in 18 months time.  She is thinking about what car she wants and needs to replace it with. She doesn't want anything too large, too ordinary, too boring.

At the weekend we were in Cardiff, and at the winter wonderland they had an MG3 for people to look at.

I told her we could probably afford to buy her a new one.

She thinks that would be great.

She knows nothing about cars, but she knows it looks funky, and has 5 seats, and that is enough for her.

I've got to say that the stories I hear in the trade about the current Chinese MGs are nothing short of appalling.  You're far better off buying used.

We or at least our parents laughed at people who bought those funny little air-cooled European things in the 50's and 60's.

TBH fair, most of us still laugh at the people who buy the stupid little air cooled German things, and those that don't, should.

We recently finally got a MG dealer locally again. Noticed a fair few 3s on roads locally since. Dealer went to several local car shows with3s and the GS. Not seen any Gs yet. However i have seen some 6s apearing all of a sudden, Not all of the drivers are of the older generation either. Indeed one or tow of the 3s have been driven by young females so perhaps they are appealing to younger drivers. Personally i would like a petrol 6 despite all the bad press. Cant be that bad really surely????
