Wanky induction kits, do they do anything?

Recommended Posts

My Accord needs a new air box and air filter (the current air box is warped and doesn't seal properly, and the air filter is grubby).

I'm thinking about upgrading to one of those OMG POWER JDM FAST AND FURIOUS NOT SUPRA S2000 induction kits while I'm at it, as it seems like the kind of car that will benefit from being able to breath easier.

But they're not cheap and I'm wondering if anyone here has ever bothered with one? Do they work? Are they worth it? Do they actually improve performance and economy?

Again, sorry for such a boring, PH-esque thread.

more a case of sounds a bit faster , id go with a used airbox and standard filter unless the cone is super cheap

It's a mod best made in conjunction with other upgrades, to get the most out of them. Something most boy racer twats don't realise is that a cone filter on its own might actually make things worse, as it's suddenly sucking in hot air from around the engine. A cold air feed is essential.

Removing the intake silencer made the Laguna v6 sound much better. I'd hazard a guess, a cone filter would sound awesome.

Unlikely to make any power differences though...

You would need to run a tube to feed cold air to the filter.

With a cold air feed and a remap it'll make a difference

not necessarily a good difference lol

My Golf has a huge carbon fibre induction kit thing. I suspect it is more for noise than power. Luckily, it's one of the ones which isn't noisy all the bloody time, but I'd be happier with a standard airbox.

Well, that's my mind made up. Standard induction it is! Thanks chaps :-)

They sound better. If you want to feel faster and smile more, its worth the few pence they cost.

For best results, fit in conjunction with an interwarmer.

I had a cone & cold air duct on a serria years ago. It didn't get properly warm in winter but was a bit quicker at the top end of the rev counter.

A fair amount of engineering goes into the design of an airbox. They are not just somewhere to mount a filter.

As many motorcycle owners have found to their cost, an airbox is far better than pod filters.

In a word, no. It draws in more air and therefore fuel to balance things out, so sure maybe .0.004% faster but uses more fuel. Plus you will sit at traffic lights revving your engine willing black cabs into a race like a prize mongtard.....

You have not been charged for this Technical advice....

Totally this, old GSXR owners have felt this pain.....

I've known people do the same on GSX14s & it makes them a lot slower. Sounds good mind.

I am a wanker. But I only wank myself.

What most don't realise about these filters is that all that extra air volume now going into the engine will have to get out again, and it's expanded as a result of combustion, so you must fit a backbox with a tailpipe of at least 3.75 times the cross-sectional diameter of the cone or you is doing it all wrong blud.

We have a £15 super enclosed cone filter on the Mgf coupled with a 52mm throttle body and it makes the car seem more drivable and smoother.

Proper cold air feed is important.

I had a corsa c 1.8sri back in the day and spent £150 on a K&N 57i kit for it and all it did was shit itself and throw the eml light on all the time.

Ended up putting a panel filter in and drilling the air box for moar powahhhhhhhhhhh.

Worked too.

This is how you do it

What? What's that? That's not an induction kit. That's a toy!

 THIS is an induction kit:

My car runs like a bag of nails if the thermostatic/vacuum hot/cold air blend flap is disconnected and run to cold all the time.

For regular running yes, cold air intake is good but at low engine revs and cruising mine draws in air at about 45-50C to prevent fuel from condensing and pooling in the intake manifold. If you're gonna run the vehicle 10/10ths all the time like in a racing situation above, little worry. If you're pottering to and from the shops I'd say get a replacement original airbox.

Original airbox with a K&N filter. However, a K&N filter will run you roughly £40 on its own.

However, I have a huge barry cone filter lying about that I removed from a previous car (the previous owner had fitted it) and I'm tempted to fit it to a certain recent purchase for LAWLS.

As above, if a K&N filter exists for the standard airbox, get that. Changing that and the spark plugs makes a noticeable difference.

General consensus: they're for dickheads.

I don't feel I need one now, but because I'm a dickhead do I have to buy one?
