My wife is trying to make me buy a more modern modern

I started a new job last week, and my wife is moaning about the impression my car will make. To me it is a modern. 2008 megane 1.5dci, 124k, owned since new.

Her problem is that it's 'well worn'. Exterior wise, it has many battle scars, and the interior smells of Scotsman, children and dog. With the appropriate detritus associated with all 3.

It happily returns over 60mpg, but she is looking at 2015 onwards cars that won't look shit in the car park.

Help required please.

Good Luck.

Seriously though, there is probably already 50 topics on this sort of thing on Pistonheads.

Do the right thing, keep ya trusty 08 Megane and tell the Mrs to stop watching too many reality 'look at me' programmes.

What do you do for a job?

The Building Society I worked for some years ago specified that the field mannagers, if they opted out of the company car scheme, had to have a presentable motor for visiting agencies and customers.

So unless you do that, it matters not. I drive a Corsa with a roll bar or an elderly Renault, or a modified Astra Coupe to the station car park every day and I work for a Bank. Nobody cares!

Put a private plate on it?

Vast majority of people have no idea what age a car is by the style. It's either modern, old-fashioned, classic or retro.

What do you think my wife thinks of my M plate 1994 Astra then?  I admit that it is very smart, but.....

I can't see the issue with a 2008 car, but I know some businesses are more car conscious than others.  One place I worked at for a while was totally new car obsessed, and I used to make a real effort to go on my push bike as they seemed to be accepting of that and considered keeping fit to be a good thing.

Reality: it is important to some people.  I just don't give a f&^%.

My wife has given up.  I'm also more or less vegetarian which she hates.  Anyway, this is autoshite not marriageshite :)

Just read the other messages.  That one about the private plate, that's pretty good.  I like that.

You've already got the job so who there is going to give a flying one what car you drive? You should see that a challenge and buy something worse.

You should see that a challenge and buy something worse off of me.... Step this way sir.

Was the car part of the interview process? If not and you just want to make a good impression then get chips-away in to sort out the scratches, clean the inside yourself and keep it clean.

When it comes to pay review time the last thing you want is a car that's as new as your boss's.

is this a shared car? Is this wifey's way of getting a nice new car for her to use?

Actually you could have just hit the nail on the head.  Women do come out with shit like this to get something new.

"Oohh look how much dust collects on top of that perfectly working television"  "Lets get a new slimmer one"

The problem she sees is that I will be working at customer sites.

She wants to spend £15k on a 'nice car', so a quick trip to ebay found me a 1996 3.2 supercharged DB7. £15.5k, 46k, would look lovely in the car parkðŸ˜

She has a 2011 1-series Msport convertible.

So she's just jealous you drive a better looking car than hers  :-D

The Aston is a grand idea though.

The aston has just been vetoed. I have also discovered that my 2001 megane cabby is also in line for the chop as 'I don't need three cars'.

I need a unit. That would solve the problem.

Just think how well that Aston would hold its value compared to a nearly new car.  You could save thousands of pounds.

(Ref the TV comment above, I got ours out of a skip - saw it one night and couldn't resist taking it home to see if it worked, which it did.  It is a relatively modern one - but she doesn't know where it came from.  She's very suspicious, but the children are sworn to secrecy.  I'm not really helping, am I?)

Fair dos. For a long time we had a shared car which basically meant I bought a car that I subsequently borrowed off her.

You could always argue it looks bad you buying a shiny new car when you've only just landed in the door.

If she doesn't go to work with you and your employer dont say anything I wouldn't bother unless you want to change car.

In a nutshell - buy the Aston

See my previous post,

that would solve your problem

Tell her to stop telling you what to do.

"Just you let me worry about that", or some other slightly condescending response would suffice.

Personally I find a 1 series Convertible deeply offensive. Tell her she doesn't need such an expensive car.

A Dacia is one of the cheapest buys for a new numberplate, leaving you enough spare cash for a Jaguar XK8.

Eh? WTF kind of a job would worry about the car you drive?

If this ever gets applied to my work (or I suspect quite a few people on here) I'd be fucked - although I could keep them guessing by arriving in a different shed each day for a while.

Thankfully I work at home 99% of the time and if I have to go to the office I take a 125 with mark 3 coaches or a 737-800 in yellow and blue :)

Call it inverse snobbery, but I am hugely proud of taking my daughter to school in old fords (and not the trendy sort) that are way older than anything her classmates roll up in.

I occasionally feel a little lonely, then a story like this cheers me right up and reminds me why I am happily divorced - 1 series ha!

Unless my employer is paying for my car they can get to fuck if they think they are telling me what to drive!

Good lord. If a 2008 Megane makes the wrong impression, most of the rest of us on here are fucked.

Follow the example set by The Shadow; £15k will get you enough Volvo estates to go in a different one every day for the next three years :)
