What auto / car / wafter / talk me out of it etc...

Hi guys.

This thread has multiple purposes. Every couple of months my brain does this thing where I have an itch to change my car - it gets progressively worse until I actually do. I have had the current Rover 75 for two years now and spent £lots on it over the last year to keep it mechanically good. Thing is, it's got laquer peel on the roof, it's had a portion of rear sill replaced & the bodywork is starting to look a little unloved. The reason for this is that I have to park in a stupidly tight car park and it's collecting knocks and dings from other people. So yes, my brains response is "NEW CAR TIIIIIME!".

Mechanically I can't fault it though, and I have a commute of about an hour each way over Buckinghamshire's finest* A & B roads which it deals with very well. I also have a slightly dodgy left knee which the autobox saves from getting too painful. So as per the title, this is a which wafty saloon / estate (NO hatchbacks) with a reliable autobox / talk me out of changing the rover thread.

At the moment I have a 'thing' for Citroen C5s... you know the really bland looking one with its hydractive suspension and unkillable 2.0HDI engine. but what are the autoboxes like? Would it feel ridiculously slow? The Rover is around 160hp, and has heated leather, climate, cruise control Etc... etc... It seems that few C5s (even exclusives) were specced with leather let alone heated seats so I'd have to lose out on spec somewhere. They all seem to have well over 150,000 miles on too, which is over double the rover's mileage. And then the citroens have cambelts, the rover has a chain etc... etc...

Any other suggestions? I could quite fancy any of the usual culprits (saab 9-5, Volvo thing, laguna, pug 607, Mercedes e class etc...) - are any of those particularly reliable? (save for the Laguna!)

There is only one car suitable IMHO.

The Volvo 740/940, they're old and therefore look good, very reliable 2.0 or 2.3 4 cylinder lumps with enough grunt to do the job, auto box is lovely, they are easily one of the most comfy and easy to drive cars I've ever been in and working on them is piss easy! So easy in fact I'd say they are a close second to a pinto engined Ford but better made and more reliable. Oh and rear wheel drive which is always a bonus.

If I needed a car for a daily commute of any distance I'd be using one of these without question.

Is your Raver 75 a diesel?

Tis indeed.

There is a beautiful Volvo 940 with the intercooled engine on Car and Classic; with a little boost fiddling they are the best, most reliable commuter money can buy with a lovely sound.

Or an 850 tdi; I have one, but looking for another for when this one wears out.

Nothing feels as premium or is as reliable or easy to work on.

It's the sweet spot of motoring; the mid 90s, cars that feel well put together and drive well and safely. And don't feel old and worn out too soon (the reason I can't own an s/v70; a good ones nice, but they get rough quick, the interiors especially so)

VW Phaeton? As big as a bus and just as hard to find. No idea what money they fetch though as can't remember seeing one for sale.

There is only one answer to this, and most, "What car do I need?" questions.

In 35 years of carage, whenever I followed any rationale, i.e. tried to apply logic, or brains, all I achieved was grabbing into the toilet, with an impeccable track record.

Whenever I followed my gut feeling, it always turned out to be the right decision. There has hitherto not been a single exception to this rule.

Always buy what you FEEL is right.

Never buy what you THINK is right.

Easy! Big wafty barge = vauxhall senator 3.0 cdi every time...

I answered the question by coming to that conclusion too, but then buying JohnK's MV6 Omega 3.2  24V 219 BHP - Wafty enough?

I guess that 200 of the horses are wasted as I have points on my licence and drive like Miss Daisy, but the ability to set the cruise at 70 mph and achieve 31 mpg in an armchair, is enjoyable.

Sorry to say this, but think the C5's you are talking about are hatchbacks...
