Now at cheap enough prices to walk away from if all goes spectacularly wrong.

Tax one on a monthly direct debit and roll that dice.*

* includes the bravado of someone who has owned a grand total of one French car in his life. That said, it was a PSA product, and not as bad as perceived wisdom would have it.

Less than perfect cars, that throw random wobbles and give the occasional grief is what gives them character. If everything just worked everytime you turned the key, it becomes boring and soleless ... like most Jap cars.

I wonder how extra they thought they could fleece the original owners for by describing a 3 door hatch as a coupe?

I used to work for Citroen dealer from 06-11. Things I remember on even 2 year old ones, carpets are awful, the pile goes all flat and ground in really easy, most of them he carpets like Those found in a junkie den, cheap rubbish!

Interior trim so fragile and brittle it broke very easily! Keys were rubbish as well, the flip mechanism on most was knackered and the buttons didn't work, usually they were holed through. Exterior door handles, seem to remember they ALL had this habit of jamming in the position they go to when you pull them to open the door, meaning continually having to tap it back into place or the door latch doesn't return and the door won't close.

That said I did like the 2007 special edition "by Loeb" versions Introduced to mark Sebastian Loeb winning the WRC in a C4 or something like that! Based on VTR+ spec but with leather/alcantara seats and only in black or red

I've always liked C4, more chance of swearage and much nudititees than BBC or ITV.

I have an 05 plated 1400 VT C4 Coupe. The previous owner had an electrics specialist out to sort a few faults out and other than that its been 100% reliable in his and my ownership. I like the shape and at being a 5ft8 fatty do find it comfortable. Handles well - 42mpg mixed driving. The seat trim is cheap cloth though - threadbare and split at 100.000 miles. I bought it to tide me over for 8 weeks but have kept it a lot longer as I enjoy driving it.

What wheels are those?

From a 206 Peugeot - I removed the lion badges. It had oversize wheels on when I bought it so I sold them.

I've joined the C4 group on Facebook - and every other query seems electrical related!

Jonathan Meades has one. I quite like how they look from behind, but if I wanted a boring modern car there are other boring modern cars I would choose first

I've always liked the looks and thought it a shame they never did a properly quick VTS version. Must have the most comically small rear wiper of evaH though.

When you buy a set of wiper blades from Citroen, they each come in their own box. The front wipers are 24 & 22 inch and the rear one (7 inch) comes in a similar box!

Yeah, especially after all they're WRC triumphs you'd think they'd even have thrown out a few Turbos or something.

It's one of the great marketing mysteries of the past decade. A company that dominated rallying with first the Xsara Wrc and then with the C4 with Loeb driving did virtually nothing to capitalise on that in its media marketing and product line...other than produce an apologetic stickered up Loeb edition.

Fair play, I'd have been all over that at that price.

Bet you would have been sniffing around the Astra behind it, also!

I'm warming to these - and I like the 3 door look especially in VTS guise.. I know an 2.0 HDi VTS locally and it apparently flies, very economical but is a bit bouncy and not than comfortable - probably a good time to get one now..

Looks like it weighs loads compared to older Citroens that I'm more used to...

I love how every modern is instantly slated on here for poor rearward visibility but a C4 with a letterbox slit for a tailgate pane compounded by a spoiler is fine.
It's one of the reasons I went for the five door when I bought mine. The distorted rear view of the VT/SX (can't really remember and don't really care) put me off completely.

The VTSs aren't that quick either; too many revs and too much weight to pull along. They're probably rocket ships compared to a 1.0 Corsa, but there's a wealth of stuff available for under a grand that would tan a VTS.

Diesels are (guardedly) fine provided you let them get up to temperature every run,  service them with the correct low ash oil (Total Quartz Ineo ECS) and never, ever go over the change intervals.
I went over with mine because I was comically skint (a much needed raise was eight months late), clogged the turbo feed pipe and starved the head of oil. I'm a stupid twat, but hey, work should have hurried up with the Benjamins.

It's back on the road now with a recon engine and box. Happy days.
