Pot washers as Parts washers ?

Are domestic  dishwashers  any good for cleaning degreasing   engine parts  ?

I am not concerned about the wife finding out or the lifespan of the dishwasher

Good for plastics and so on. Heavilly crudded oily mechanical stuff can gunk up the insides though.

Also spare a thought for the drains....if its plumbed into the mains drain your council wont be too happy.

I have an old professional kitchen dishwasher that I think would fare better than a domestic one.....need to get round to doing something with it some day.

Probably better off knocking one up from half a 45 gallon drum and using a washing machine or fuel pump.

maybe you need to take the top drawer out and use the heavy soil attachment that fits in its place

What did you use as cleaner fluid?

I read a thread on this elsewhere a while back and some one did it using proper parts washer fluid on the inlet pipe and a crude recycle system set up. Might get more joy with that than fairy liqutabs!

If that's not being used for food again I'd be tempted to use caustic soda instead of dishwasher powder, and plenty of it. (Careful with the waste water, though!)

Alternatively, if it's not fussy about the water pressure you could use something like neat traffic film remover instead of water, with a gravity feed and recycle what comes out the drain pipe in the next wash!. (Actually, you could just pour it straight into the machine and close the door, not bothering withe the cold fill valve at all!)

Do NOT use caustic soda - it will dissolve anything made from aluminium - the sump, bits of the dishwasher etc etc

And as an added bonus hydrogen gas is a by-product - which will be contained within the washer and, with all due respect, there's likely to be a spark or two from the internal gubbins.

Good point.

Best to video any experiments like this, then; a decent sized explosion could be an earner on YouTube!

Used to work as a Saw Doctor in a large sawmill and we had a loverly heated ultrsonic tank for cleaning the steel circular blades.

1 of the labourers decided to drop an alloy from his Golf to give it a clean without telling anyone.

When he went back for it an hour later we ended up using a large ladel to get the remains out.....
