Back in the 1960s U-Haul had a fleet of roving display pick-ups that were set up at various locations and spun one of their trailers around to attract customers.

A batch of Volvo F89-32 long-haul tractors imported into the USSR for use by Sovtransavto, 1975. Which is strange considering the size and diversity of the home factories. Perhaps they where used on export duties into the West were spares and repairs would be easier. Hungarocamion, as discussed a few months ago, ran a fleet of locally built RADA lorries, based on MAN's and DAF's, for this very reason.

Had a chat with local legend Robert Gassor the ERF man today. This beauty is his latest toy, restored as a tribute to the company his family worked for. It's a real blast from the past as Holtons trucks would have been common sights round here when they were in business.

He said something no other haulier has ever said in the 2020s - he's planning to get rid of his Scanias and replace them with ERFs

Just in case you havn't seen this (fast-forward the first 30 seconds if you don't speak Welsh).  70s trucking as it was.

I caught the word 'caerphilly' and hoped it would be mass transportation of cheese, but as the stuff is black, not creamy white I guess it's coal.

Are they moaning about the dust being spread on the roads by the lorries/general mining?

Ironically the folk of Immingham have the same problem but from imported coal; of course the importers either strenuously deny the black dust is from their massive coal heaps on the docks or are feverously spraying them with water to stop the dust drifting into the town....

The last photo has the G.Burrow & Son truck of which the 1st 2 pics show it's ancient genny. That genny wasn't in use but judging by the cable hanging out the back it could be used if required.

That ERF is an ex-Stobart wagon - but never had a name. It was part of the Britvic Drinks contract at the time and would've been one of 5 in Tango livery (there were also 5 in Pepsi livery)

Here it is in its original livery.

L524MHH1.jpg.f2670c4c9190d4de2d7293061d505a63.jpg

I do have a fairly sizeable collection of old Stobart photos and a fairly complete spreadsheet of vehicles pre-2007 from when I was really into them as a kid and was a member of the fan club - I received a load of discs of photos from a couple of other truckspotters - I've never uploaded these because I don't know if I have the original author's consent, having not spoken to them in 10-15 years and believing they may now be no longer with us, but I can probably share a few without taking the piss.

Obligatory photo of the one that I managed to get named after my mum, though. No, I'm not uploading the one with 11 year old me stood in front of it after we drove through the night to Carlisle after finding out it was being liveried then sent off to Belgium immediately.

I do also have the honour of having been inside Paris Hilton (stop sniggering at the back). Somehow managed to get a ride in it around DIRFT. Pictured below is the old Crick depot, now the site of a massive Sainsburys warehouse.

I’m currently in the Netherlands and have (again) visited the DAF museum in Eindhoven. An excellent museum with terrible parking, but well worth a visit! A few randoms:

Now this DAF FTG 95 is 36/37 years old… pretty much box fresh and doesn't appear restored either. I’m guessing the gunmetal painted chassis was a show special build?

On the DAF front, I've seen this around a few times:

E680XAO3.jpg.d5fcefb99fc4dffaf98b793fbd553385.jpg

I believe it was restored at some point and did spend some time in the big glasshouse at the Crick depot. I've definitely seen it in the late 2000s still in livery up at Carlisle.

And because bugger it, I've had to delve into the archives again (I promise I'm not going to keep polluting this thread with Stobart wagons!), have one of my favourites. They were never really big Renault fans - 23 of them across the 90s/the year 2000, mostly Premiums - they only ever had 5 Magnums, all bar one of them were this original shape. I remember seeing this the first time I went up to Carlisle and being bloody terrified because it just looked so big and imposing (I was probably around 8 at the time in fairness!)

Some lovely stuff there.

That big green & red tipper looks just like an International Paystar. I wonder if DAF built them under license or something?

Also, the white chassis cab in the pic above the tug looks like a Volvo F4/F6. We’re the cab designs shared?

Must be modelled on the truck I posted as they only ever had one 3600 Space Cab, but they had a 4x2 - I'm assuming they probably don't make a 4x2 model!

The TUM-975 sweeper was developed in the early 60s. From 1963 to the early 1980s, these vehicles were produced by the Moscow Krasny Plant of the Ministry of Railways of the USSR. The TUM-975 was initially used the engine from the Moskvich-407, derated to 29 hp, later it used the engine from the Moskvich-408, also with reduced power. The power unit was located behind the cab, with FWD. Depending on the time of year, sweeping or snow removal equipment was fitted to the front.

Not a patch on our favourite from the DDR, the Multicar, the only IFA combine vehicle to still be with us.

It's 1901 and Guglielmo Marconi’s transmitter is being carried on a Thornycroft steam lorry (not a motor car as mentioned below the drawing). This type of aerial was developed for the British Army. The Thornycroft had a carrying capacity of 5 tons, and was capable of a travelling at 12-14 mph with a full load. The rear part of the lorry was fitted out as an operating room, containing instruments and electric batteries, and on the roof was placed the all-important cylinder aerial. Marconi and the British Army selected this steam lorry for its strength of construction, which made it ideally suited for work over rough ground.  The system was also able to transmit and receive signals while moving.

The KTG-2 is a freight trolleybus, produced between 1972 and 1991 by the F.E. Dzerzhinsky Kiev Electric Transportation Plant.  224 KTG-2s were produced, they could carry 8 tonnes and were used for the delivery of goods and were also used for maintenance duties by trolleybus depots.
