Incidentally, Creyke Beck is now the southerly terminal of the Dogger Bank wind farm (the world's largest, currently being built in the North Sea, which will provide enough power for 6 million homes) and similarly large transformers were also delivered in a similar manner, by Allelys, but this time down the A1079 Beverley by-pass rather than Park Lane as a) Park Lane is too twisty and b) the new substation is the other side of the railway.

The transformers, made by Hitachi, were offloaded at King George V docks in Hull, driven up the A63, then cross country and back down the A1079 to the site.

From the big bastard transformers on the special heavy haul trucks, let’s see how the little distribution transformer’s (11KV - 415v) used to go to site…

The little distribution transformer’s used to often come with 4 tiny solid metal wheels on their bases, which enabled them to be rolled from factory onto a truck then once at their site they rolled off and into final position.
Interesting suspension set up on the Bedford for this.
Others without wheels had to be craned on/off the truck then craned into position at site, which is how it’s done nowadays.

I got the pics from somewhere online, but I’d seen copies of them when I worked at SSE.

That Matador is ex Sir Robert Fossett's Circus from Northampton and Atlas Editions made a model of it (although they got the reg wrong). I didn't realise it was still (just about) in existence.
