SiC's Silver Saab 9-5 2.3t Vector - Gone!

No. But 2.3t 180bhp though. Vector trim level.

Oil pressure light comes on around corners - hopefully just low oil.

Gearbox might be shagged. :(

Perfectly fine when cold, but in stop, start heavy traffic it was banging progressively worse. Got to the point coming home that it wasn't sure what gear it wanted to be in :?

Luckily I only paid £180 for it. (well not even passed the cash yet!)

I was warned about it clunking between 1st and 2nd. However I suspected it was a gearbox mount. Now I don't think as much. :(

Interior fan doesn't work but I knew that already. Given the milage, probably the brushes in the motor.

If worst comes to worst, it will break for far more than what you are going to pay for it :)

I'm not a fan of the night panel facility, as I like my dashboard to be lit up like Blackpool :)

True, but breaking a car is a bit messy and a PIA. Not sure if I'd get away with it with the wife!

Was going to drive it to the car wash tonight, but a bit nervous it may FTP on me...

Only covered on the insurance for today, then wait 10 days till I get a fresh month of tax.

Both issues can be solved with MOAR BOOST

Damnit. I knew what that was from the key... but so did everybody else.

Ooof! A 9-5 is definitely relevant to my interests. As long as it isn't a diesel.

Diesel-engined Saabs are the Ace of Spades. I totally regret buying one.

Oil level is actually above max. Pretty sure the sump must be sludged up. Not so much a bargain as I hoped :(

worth whippin it aff (the sump that is?)

Skoda Estelle, 5 speed ?

They were great fun cars, sideways everywhere which is always a good thing!

Don't these have a reputation for get oil strainer getting bunged up or am I thinking of something else?

Exactly that.

If it's not done any damage it's got to be an easier fix than main bearings and a crank grind, assuming it's not an engine out job to get the sump off?

Maybe. Looks a bit of a ball ache job though as the exhaust has to come off. I don't think the exhaust has ever been off!

MOT until 26th October. Clunks a bit over bumps, etc but that's probably just worn engine/gearbox mounts.

Debating what to do.

Original plan was to get it insured + tax next month (cba buying a months tax with 10days to go...). Then get it MOT and going from there.

Engine is pretty rattly and tappy. Wouldn't be surprised if damage has already been done. I managed to get the light come on 3 times in the short drive back. The last time it came on long enough to pop up a warning on the SID (Saab Information Display)

If you drive it with mechanical sympathy then it probably won't be too bad though to be honest.

Needs sump dropping and cleaning.

Gearbag will probably be alright with a couple of fluid changes. Changes really well when cold!

Posted

Is it worth banging some engine flush type goop in and doing an oil change in the hope it de sludges a bit?

No experience with these so I might be pretty far off the mark

It builds up on the strainer. Only way to clean it is to drop the pan.

Working coil pack second hand looks to be worth around £60-80. SID with all pixels work ~£30.

Not too bad I guess if I pull a couple of parts and should get most of my money covered.

Is the ECU worth anything? I think the Saab tuner (noobtune) will remap through the post so might be of interest to someone who wants to keep driving whilst it's away. That's if divorce/marrying issues can be resolved (cars, not driver!)

Posted

They go pretty cheap on eBay it seems (under twenty quid). The ECUs are reliable and plenty of free, decent free tools are around to reflash them. The tools don't need to divorce or marry those units.

Posted

One of my hopes with this was that it'd be decent enough to run around with, so I could make another diagnostics app (like I did with Renault).

Just be in more depth and able to divorce/marry all the modules too.

As you might be able to tell, I'm a bit bummed about it being bit of a turd. :(

Posted

Gutted that it's a bit of a plum, but I would truly love to have the spacehopper nads required to do a sight-unseen eBay purchase so massif rezpekt to you for that.

Could it be that the sump being overfilled is causing the problems? Too much oil can be as bad as too little.

Saab lore suggests that later petrol-engined 9-5s (2004 onwards) are largely devoid of sludging issues, due to various engine-related things being redesigned. A silver cam cover denotes such an engine.

I have every confidence that The Aero's engine will remain in a good state, despite having done 158,000 miles, as it's got a full service history, has always been run on synthetic oil, is fitted with the modified PCV system and had its sump and oil strainer cleaned by a Saab specialist during the previous owner's tenure. I'm told that if they are going to bang, the earlier engines will do so around 100,000 miles...
