'My First Shitter' - what car?

Did you check on a Mk3 Golf? Just out of interest.

I had thought about Corollas when I was looking myself, but a 1.3 saloon was looking like it would be about £2300 a year to insure.

A 1.6 was going to cost more than a Rover 800.

This insurance stuff makes fuck all sense.

Protons could be a good call actually, I forgot about those.

Do Mazda Demios still carry a Grand Tourismo premium?

Posted

What about a Direhatsu (barely able to) Move, or something along the Kei car lines, sub 1 litre engine make a difference?

There's an early Suzuki Alto (2 dr) which I see occasionally, looks like an old panda but more rounded, Those newer Altos were dirt cheap new so must be in shitter territory now?

Posted

Mx5's qualify for classic insurance don't they? Or do you have to be over 21 or something to qualify?

Posted

I like Sirions, having had a brief go of Cleon-Fonte's a while ago. The diddy Daihatsus (Cuore/Sirion) are disproportionately expensive however, and I can't find any Moves on eBay (can't remember when I last saw one either).

I'll look at Altos now. edit: again just sub-£1000, so an option, but they seem to be £500 minimum. Other cars are a little cheaper.

I'm 21 in November so that's not a bother - MX is a nice idea, but I don't think it'd be as good in execution.

Become Autoshite royalty for £210

https://www.gumtree.com/p/fiat/fiat-tipo-1.4-1992-108.473-miles-special-version-with-anti-rust-coating/1184060999

Too small for a family of four planning to camping a lot so we have now a bigger, newer car.
In six years only once(not included when I forgot to put petrol twice) I needed to use the breakdown cover because of a rusted cable lead I didn't know needed change.

No MOT.
Brakes need normal service
Directional rubbers need change
The engine always leaked some oil.
The interior is in good/regular condition
The clutch was replaced a year ago, the brakes had a lots of parts replaced as well as the fluid valve
Exceptionally good external condition as I heard this batch had a special coating much more resistant to rust
One front headlight(£10 on ebay) needs to be changed and probably some of the tires too.

Offers welcome

I would like to see how much people would pay for it and most importantly what they would do with it because I already have an offer from a spares dealer.

Once, looking for the Norfolk Showground car park I was directed to the classic car exhibition instead of the normal place for visitors so maybe a vintage car enthusiast may like to have it.

What about moving up to the 1.8 to 2.0 automatic area, old accords and Avensi might be cheaper to insure than a smaller more often spun into ditch hatch back.

I've just posted an old Diesel Accord onto Dollywobblers thread, I'd be interested to know what a quote would come out at.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/honda/cheap-runabout-honda-accord-tdi-2.0-turbo-diesel-12-months-mot-tow-bar.-passat.-avensis-d4d./1186619928

My Accord coupe was incredibly cheap on insurance as they have a bit of a giffer image, as do the Civic coupes, they might be worth a quote in 2.0 form for the Accord coupe?

Have you got a quote for the Logo yet, it's a far more exclusive and rare car compared to a scabby pride

Add Old Man on the Pride and it's even less.

As soon as I have enough cash together for Pride, tax, and insurance, it shall happen. Just need to clean up some stuff with uni etc and we're off.

Glad to hear it. After driving the Shitefest '15 roffle Pride I was genuinely disappointed not to win it, the thing was a hoot to drive.

However, if that doesn't work out Rover R8s as mentioned previously are a good choice. Preferably a 214 for the mingebag tax bracket, plus the K-series is the better choice of engine over the Honda 1.6 IMO. There was mention from Mr B that the Fatha_Bo11ox 214 win machine would be up for grabs at some point.

I've tried R8s, and they're around £1200. Not bad not great.

GoCompare has shat itself now so I'll have to stop getting quotes for a bit.

I like R19s!

I saw that, proper LOL'd. It's different! £895 is a bit high for me at the moment though.

As I said last night,in my experience I've noticed larger engined cars are cheaper to insure. The Picasso, vec c and kia are all cheaper for me than thesaxo diesel, saxo 1.4,pinto,corsa and Micra bizarrely. Out of the 3 larger mentioned cars the kia I have now is cheapest.

Posted

Nah, I've no objection to a Maestro!

Annoyingly GoCompare doesn't recognise Ledbury Maestros.

I think Ledbury Maestros are seen as kit cars.

The R19 is just down the road from me. I used to have the Chamade version (R19 with a boot).

Posted

That 19 comes with bulletproof c type overhead valve engine giving a mahoosive 60 bhp. And as it is 27 years old it surely must be considered classic especially as it is a buttery biscuit base version (rare when new).

The only disadvantage of it is if you get it, the rest of your life will be disappointing as you will never experience such levels of win ever again

As my earlier post. Get the policy loaded up with 3 old duffers it come right down. And once it's down gives you a few quids extra to expand into reliable shite that you're not having to spend dosh on daily.

The micra in the pic was Newark car auction bargain. £475. It's had a good 6 months use and sold on for more than we paid for it again bringing down your expenditure for the year.

Indeed, they're even registered as such.

The downside of that is having to drive around in a K12 Micra.

Old does not = broken.

If Ghosty gets a Kia Pride or a High'n'dry accent coopay, there is about 0.000001% chance of it ever breaking down even if utterly neglected for it's entire life so far.

Newer doesn't necessarily mean better, I'd say a Micra wouldn't be any more reliable and would probably be (much) more on insurance.

Left field but have you considered something really old? A35 or somesuch? Might be a little pricier to buy but also resale value to factor in... Plus hero points etc

Posted

I use Peter James insurance for all my chod and everything for me to insure is always £50 a year or a £15 fee for swapping cars.  Ridiculous that the mk3 panda 4x4 was £400 plus to insure which is why it went.

I'd give them a ring ghosty and ask what terms  conditions etc, all the panda's and uno are insured by them, as was the micetro and regatta.

Putting a higher excess on insurance used to bring the costs down, no idea if that still works.

BTW, what does it cost a new driver to insure a 50cc moped these days? Used to be very cheap, though I don't know if it ever helped getting cheaper car insurance later.

I'm too old to get a "student/young persons" discount on anything, to young to get OAP discount. Therefore cheaper car insurance is the only bloody thing that's got cheaper -  until I hit 60 then it starts to climb again - by then I'll be on mobility scooters, no insurance and running down miscreants in asda for shits and giggles.

As Richard said with the Ledbury, they can be seen as kit cars.  Funny one to sort actually, I had mine insured as a Rover Maestro as that's the only title any insurer would accept for it.  I seem to recall the insurance was very cheap but a proper Maestro would have been cheaper still, and probably more comfortable, and I'd probably still have it now.

Other things I've noticed bring insurance down are owning the same car for 12 months or more and when you accrue 3 years no claims.  Age is less of a factor no, it seems, they just assume anyone single and male is a danger to all the nuns and kittens and charge accordingly (read: wounded rhino).

In the not too distant future I might actually be able to afford to run a car!

I've been muttering about BXs for a bit, but I might be getting a little bit ahead of myself.

205s have been suggested, with any engine, and that seems like a good call.

Any other ideas of good starter shitters to look out for?

Whatever is being roffled the week you actually decide to 'buy' a car.
