Ouicar.fr - aiding and abetting shite rentals in France

So it turns out there is a magnificent site called ouicar.fr where anyone can rent cars from various random French people. Being France this means many of them are ridiculous.

My steed on a recent jaunt was a 1991 Peugeot 205 Junior - the one with the 950cc engine, 4 speed gearbox, the manual choke and a total lack of any luxuries such as a clock or a rev counter. Every single panel was dented to buggery and I had to pick it up from a suburban block of flats with chickens running around the yard. (More photos to come.) Despite this, the Junior covered 850 km with absurd ease, often at speeds considerably above the autoroute limit and fully loaded with passengers and booze. A quick look around the ouicar offerings in most big cities shows lots of stuff in the 20 to 30 year age bracket, plus glories like V6 manual 406 coupes and Ford Taunuses. And 2CVs, though the cost of anything considered a "classic" tends to be quite salty.

Your French has to be fairly good - but massively recommended.

Didn't know about this, sounds like a great/amusing system.

Plenty there for up to 30-40 euros a day. Newer/bigger stuff predictably more. 2CV Charleston one of the most expensive I've found so far at 115 a day.

How does insurance/breakdown cover work?

Posted

It says insurance and breakdown cover is included!

Hard to see how much is being made on some of them, in central Paris you can have a Citroen C3 pluriel for 10 euro a day (no pics for maximum collection excitement), or my top choice, a Dacia Logan saloon for 19 euro a day.

Presumably the French car insurance industry aren't quite the mega-scalping shitehawks ours are.

Considering Europcar want 70 POUNDS a day for a Fiat 500 in France this looks like VALU.

Depends which bit of Paris, I would think that in some of the areas whilst you could get the car 10 euros a day, there is no guarantee the owner will know about it.

This is really interesting and has the potential for turning a good touring holiday into a great one.

Also, forgive me, can I just say NICE LEGS. Oh come on, you were all thinking it.

Awesomes. And there I was thinking about getting a car from Hertz next summer.

Can't wait till I get a twelve year old Dacia Logan for a fortnight instead. Wife will be really* pleased*

This is quite splendido, the better/more autoshite the car, the cheaper. There's a '97 Twingo near Lille for 12 Euros a day, less than a British farmer would charge for pitching your own tent on his field for a night. Eurostar to Lille then let the holiday commence!

Are you allowed to take the car beyond l'interieur? And is there a search by car rather than the map and price flags?

Check out this bad boy.

Edit: Although you could buy one outright in Britain for the price of a week's rental.

^^ Is he hoping it'll be perceived as a classic, English leather and walnut crock? Looks like a business venture to me.

-so yes, in certain countries.

I wish there was a search by car. But you can search by categories. Sadly there is none for "old shitter" and "voitures de collection" tend to be pretty overpriced. Nevertheless a careful search can find some quite amusing stuff - even a 2CV for under 40 a day.

If a Talbot Tagora could be found on here, it'd become the new Autoshite bike.

Hell, I'd invent a trip to France just to have a go.

OuiCar n'est pas encore accessible depuis votre pays d'origine.

Sorry, OuiCar is not available in your country yet.

Update

Ouicar is now Turo. The level of shite remains.

Currently hooning around in this. 1992, so one of the last models to run a carb. Despite looking utterly shagged it's a sweet little thing on 100,000 km and a hoot on mountain roads. 200 euros for 15 days. Can recommend!

I could buy one for that much.

I've also found the availability of shite to vary massively depending on the region. But locally, as well as the 205 and 106, I've had two MK 1 Twingos (one of which was terminally fucked), a 1992 Clio, a very entertaining Ford Puma, and a floppy topped 307. All added lots to the experience.
