Rancho #2 - The Silver one. - A little progress.

I'm told these Simca engines are fairly indestructible so hopefully 83C is right. Mine will run, but still needs all of the above (and leaks prodigiously from the water pump, too).

I haven't been brave enough to close the bonnet on mine properly yet, even for the long trailer journey, because the catch looks every bit as crusty as yours. Front-hinged bonnets for the win.

Your seats are a great deal cleaner than mine, too. Mine seem to have footprints branded on to the vinyl, rather oddly.

Sum-up: reckon I'm ahead on points, just, but you're about to zoom past on the inside. I need to get a wiggle on.

Just had a report that the rancho has made it to Andover, only another 100 and something miles to go.

I think a visit to Chez Holbeck is in order...

I'm surprised you didn't come this afternoon.

Just had a very kind offer from a friend to print and bind the service parts list (French version), which is available on line.

Thanks for that pic, it gives us just a taste of that sheer thrill and sense of peak winning upon seeing an actual Matra Rancho rocking up and being unloaded at YOUR HOUSE. Superb.

snigger snigger....lol...

i too had a silver rancho....with the same check interior...and sold it with a factory workshop manual...i wonder...????

i used it one morning to drop kids off at school and as i decended from having two wheels on the pavement, the engine decided that it wanted to lie on the road... turns out the previous owner had "done a bit of work" on it...including replacing every bolt with mild steel ones, and bits of screwed rod...managed to hold the engine up with rope and a wooden batten enough to get home...

and i still continued to buy them...4 of the burgers so far...

cheers...al

Silly question of the day, the battery connectors are the old french type where (I guess) there is some sort of wing nut arrangement on the battery to clamp them down, anyone know what that sort of battery is actually called? (My googling is drawing a blank).

Also realised I don't have the battery clamp, but hey ho!

They area standard battery with a threaded attachment fitted to the terminal.

I'd be tempted to lop them off and fit proper battery clamps.

That's what everyone else does. Talbot / Peugeot clamps have plastic threads and are crap.

Keep this, it's actually a great design. Simply push it onto the battery terminal, no need for tools, no counterpart on the battery needed.

Tagora has the same:

My Solara has the same battery connections, they seem to work alright. I can't fathom out how the battery is secured, I think consulting the HBOL is called for.

Today's shenanigans was to apply rust converter to the remains of the battery tray. This done I turned my attention to the air intake, as I could see some leaves and shit through the balance hole.

Took the pipe off and this was what I found.

Checked the filter and here's a nice mouse penthouse.

Luckily I had a new one in stock.

Anyways, I also turned the engine over by pushing the car in second  and it rotates. (something I hadn't actually checked until now).

The oil in the sump looks quite clean but god knows how old it is, so I'll change that next.

(oh and I managed to drop and smash my digital camera so only poxy phone pics until I can get another one).

What rust converter are you using?

The stuff they sell in tool station (own brand). TBH I already had it in stock an it seems to work ok from previous experience.

Jesus that air filter! Sorry to hear about your camera, but it would only have shit itself trying to cope with the grade A porn you would try and photograph with it during this thread anyway...

If it makes more pictures of Ranchos appear on my screen, I've got a Canon digital camera here you can have for postage.

Is it the pinky white stuff that goes black?

No, this stuff is charcoal grey. Actually matches the underbonnet colour quite well.

A little update.

Rancho now has a battery and most electrical things seem to work.

I took the plugs out to clean them up and whilst they were out I bunged some fresh pez in the tank and span the engine over to pump the fresh fuel through. Nice clean petrol gets to the lift pump, but no further. I suspect either the pipe to the carb is blocked or internally collapsed, new pipe and inline filter will be acquired shortly.

In other news, I had a good lead locally for someone to do the welding.  A guy that had his own garage for many years, known for quality work at reasonable prices,  now semi retired and working from a unit on a farm. Great, just the man then.

Except he doesn't want to do it. " Sorry, I only do work on interesting cars like MGB's these days"   FFS.

Hoew the hell is an MGB 'interesting' compared to a Rancho?
