MC's shite spots - Oct '09 (P6 Roverload)

One of the best looking cars ever made, and great to drive. Shame about everything else, however. I would imagine this is a cherished example that destroyed its own engine (as Gammas did) and probably its owner's sanity for good measure.

Can somebody save it?

Any Subaru conversion? :) Or reverse the trend among Beetle owners to nick flat-4s from better cars, and chuck a 1200 lump in it or something.

Shit on a stick. The r-12ed truck is a Romanian TV, which they tried to sell in the UK in 1975 and again in 1980 - and failed both times. This is an early model judging by the small radiator grille, which makes it pre-78 and prosumably one of the '75 ones sold as an ARO along with the real ARO whose yuonger brother came over as the Dacia Duster in the 80s. (While on the W German market Dacias were sold as ARO Familias... but I digress)

That in my book makes it ultimate obscure shite - about 1 million points. They're ludicrously obscure even in Romania although they were "officially" produced until 2001. A mate of mine has the earliest known, a '67 4x4 model... and it's pretty good off road!

TVs, in a few devious disguises:

ooer, I didn't reckon on it being something so obscure. Are that ARO crowd still on the go? They seemed to be pretty prolific in their day.

Nah... went bust a few years ago, STILL making the same (though heavily facelifted) cars, the 24 and then 10. They even had a version with a Cossie engine!

Why do they all say 'SPREADING' now? The livery on this T45 looks quite futuristic in an '80s way.

What a great selection of unloved old junk! Keep it up MILF :)

I'm quite ashamed to say that most cars from about 1900-1940 look indistinguishable to me.

Same here MC..

Oh, and can you grab the front bumper off this mondeo for me next time you are there!

Mind you, it's probably cracked the other side!

Yes! It'll probably be there forever as it's a pretty unknown spot.

Quality spots there! Looks like those rear lights and bumpers of the Acclaims would be useful to some shiteist somewhere :( I remember when I used to live up in Inverness my ex went on about an abandoned car somewhere in a bog, think it was near Cawdor or something. She gave me a row when I descended said bog to investigate one day. From the only 2 surviving parts (Roof and Dash-top) I deduced after about 1/2 hour that it was an Anglia  I've also seen the now-famous green Talbot Horizon near Gairloch lol.

Looks a great old school scrappy that, i used to love clambering about the local yards to retrieve bits.. now they wont let you in, and wont sell you anything.. just depollute and crush  Surprised to see the montegos and acclaims.. i assume they must have been there ages..Where is it?

This isn't in Alness is it??

No, near Grantown-on-spey

Surprised to see the montegos and acclaims.. i assume they must have been there ages..Where is it?

They've only recently moved to the scrappy, but they must have been sitting somewhere else for ages. The scrappy is near Alness, which might be what threw Tiff!

Ah, My Boss in Alness had a 2.9 XJ40 identical to that, borrowed it for the weekend once, and couldn't believe how thirsty and unerpowered it was..Scrappy-Doo's? Thats what the scrappy at Evanton was called when I lived up that way.

I recently visited Harris and Lewis, buoyed by rumours I'd heard about the island being a floating scrapyard! They weren't altogether wrong...

Nearby was this Audi 80. The islanders seem to love the last generation of 80s, there's loads of them kicking about - maybe for their cheapness and rust resistance

 Stuff really does rust up there doesn't it ! Went upto Lewis a few years back and there was very little on the roads that was 'old' and even newer stuff was starting to show a decent amount of rust. The continual proximity to the sea and the fact that its very fucking cold and wet up there must really help the rust along.

Christ on a bike! Looking at those photos is like going forward in time, Autoshite - style about 25 years. The vision of the collapsed Sierra and P-reg FSO, even the 80's vans is quite a sight even in 2009.Good spots :D

The FSO and Subaru shocked me for sure - not exactly the most rust-resistant of vehicles, but still...One of the oldest cars I saw on the road up there was a gaudy Mk1 Escort Mexico (or replica), undoubtedly imported from the mainland.I saw a Rover P4 in Harris, but it had disappeared by the time I passed its place again, looked in 'daily runner' kind of condition, but not rusty - must have been a visitor.

Last time I bought a car was six years ago, budget £2k*. Couldn't believe my luck when a Corolla diesel estate less than 5 years old was advertised by a dealer in Muir of Ord, within budget. Went to look and the islands had already killed it. Ex Lewis and made more of ore than metal. There was a MKII Cav like the one above about 6 miles south out of Stornaway last time I passed, wonder if that's the same one? Mind you that was a few years ago.*Bought a 4 year old Fiat Bravo, still going. More shit than shite, but there you go.

Are they big on tax and MOT etc. there? I visited Eigg in 1978 and all their vehicles magically moved off-road when there was a policeman on the ferry. There were numerous cars that had clearly been left where they expired, and a Mk2 Cortina joined that group during my stay.
