Guest Burger1 Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 If any..Decent engine shit'ish bodyworkShit'ish engine decent body2 mondy estates both tdci one's lx (shit'ish engine) the other ghia x (shit'ish body)I need to get something sorted out and fkn quick, I've put a clutch and flywheel, flexi exhaust, 2 injectors, starter in the lx but so far nothing in the ghia x but needs (to my knowledge) clutch and flywheel, welding (hole in back chassis underneath) 2 o/s shocks, front brake pipes, either one or both top mounts or a rack as "catches" when turning from right from 12' o'clockOr cut my losses and scrap both..
rantingYoof Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I've experienced the worst of both worlds. I had a near perfect 825 with a kettle engine and a barely-held-together Mk1 MR2 with an engine that was as sweet as a nut. In both cases it didn't work out. I'd probably lean towards good engine and shittish bodywork though, as it's the engine that ensures you get from A to B . eddyramrod 1
chaseracer Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 You can fix bodywork with gaffer tape. Doesn't work so well with the oily bits. Supernaut, Sloth in a bowl and Junkman 3
Mr_Bo11ox Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 both sound shit - scrap immediately alf892, fred, scruff and 2 others 5
purplebargeken Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I'd ditch them both, get something off here for a few hundred quid. No-one is going to shaft you car-wise on AS. Trust me on that. johngarty, Bobthebeard, Junkman and 1 other 4
Eddie Honda Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Ditto, if you need something fucking quick, buy your way out of trouble with some cheap chod. Junkman and eddyramrod 2
Dick Cheeseburger Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Buy the Civic on here innit. Junkman and eddyramrod 2

Doesn't work so well with the oily bits. True too I'd ditch them both, get something off here for a few hundred quid. No-one is going to shaft you car-wise on AS. Trust me on that. Can't now I'm skint Ditto, if you need something fucking quick, buy your way out of trouble with some cheap chod.As above I'm really in shit as to what to do....forgot to say, the shit'ish engine/good body has about 10 months mot, the other has 2 months

mercrocker Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 For a beater I would sooner have good mechs than solid metal particularly on a modern-ish Opposite applies in a sliding scale according to age and long-term plans for anything else. Faced with the Mondy dilemma I would sack the poorly one off with the decent body and use t'other until something better came along. Actually I have just re-read your OP. Mr Bollox is correct - frag 'em both. eddyramrod 1
billyboy406v6 Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Engine first, mot second, body 3rd, its the AS way !!! chaseracer 1
sierraman Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Sack both off. Take the new parts off and frag the rest. You can get a Mondeo diesel that runs properly for £6-800.
RoadworkUK Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Am I missing something? Take the good bits from the Ghia X and put them in the LX? Wilko220 and catsinthewelder 2

Mr Bollox is correct - frag 'em both. Exactly this ^^^^^^ If it's an old (and simple) car then bodywork every time, I could change an engine in my dolomite or Capri quicker than fixing a smallish hole properly. But for a daily/ hack as long as the bodywork is not dangerous who cares? But there are plenty of stupid cheap cars out there with both so why choose one or the other?
sierraman Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Faced with the cost of either an injector failure or a DMF on a TDCI, I'd sack it off and carry over any worthwhile parts to the next one. These are really good cars, arguably the diesel a better bet than a smoky oil drinking 1.8 petrol. But I wouldn't get attached, I'd look for one at the price I said that's likely as not had recent injectors or a DMF or you can test that they are good to go, run it then sack it off at the first instance of serious grief as above. Watch out for 'recent injector recalibration' -sure fire last ditch attempt to avoid replacing duff injector.
Captain Furious Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Having owned a Mk3 Mondeo Estate I can attest that clutches, steering racks, shocks and top mounts are all an absolute misery of a job. (although all conveniently facilitated by each other - ie if you do the clutch, the rack is a piece of piss while the subframe is out, likewise the shocks because its all dismantled anyway) If I was gonna keep any it'd be the LX by the sounds of it, but they're both disposable cars now unfortunately. mikebee 1
oldcars Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Or cut my losses and scrap both..Sorry we don't know what that means here chaseracer and sierraman 2
sierraman Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 What I like to do is sink money and time into stuff like exhausts then scrap them. That's just my approach. inconsistant and Jerzy Woking 2

You might be right... Am I missing something? Take the good bits from the Ghia X and put them in the LX? A mate said said that earlier... take the leather interior, 6 disker, steering wheel, 18" allys (bit to rough for me though), leccy folding mirrors (a lot of hassle though trying to put them in an LX).....and other bit n bobs from the ghia x.....dont know i'll think about it.. I spoke to the mechanic i use today too, he said put it (ghia x) for an mot see what needs done and take it from there....he's probably right

Guest Burger1 Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Am I missing something? Take the good bits from the Ghia X and put them in the LX?Would it really be wholly unreasonable to desire both decent engine and bodywork?I'd Need to put the engine from the ghia x in the lx then.....to be honest though, I don't like it in gold though that's the colour of the lx I didnt say this yet though.. last week I put a gal of petrol in the lx, there was 2 gals of diesel already in from empty then I did that and drove about 8-10 miles before I realised then promptly put another 4 gals of diesel in to try and dilute it. The engine's a bit noisier but not much, I guess maybe I should maybe scrap both now as I was told it's only a matter of before it blows up.. Having use of a civic 1.4 petrol for a month caused me to do that, fkn idiot!
beko1987 Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 That changes things then! Maybe have a stash of cash ready, use both until they both expire in a ball of fire (whilst increasing the cash fund the longer they run), then scrap both and add ££ to the pot, then buy? Mondy might run for months though, or it might go next week. Not had an engine that cares about its fuel before though, so am not too qualified to answer
eddyramrod Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Bin them off and buy one of the many impressive* reliable* steeds available on this very forum Junkman 1
Guest Burger1 Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 I'm skint till I sell something and gonna loose a bloody stack if selling the gold lx, I got the ghia x cheap enough so shouldn't loose on it....it's a pisser though with basically 2 scrappers sitting outside I'll try and get some pics of the body of the ghia x later, it's the bad bubbling at the bottom of both front doors and some (but not as bad) at the back doors. Also a scrape and wee ding on the pass back arch and small "crease" on the tailgate. Poor thing's had a hard/rough life in the last couple of years it needs some serious tlc now lol but like I say I'll get some pics of it later and see what the AS crew think.
