anonymous user Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Ok, I don't need it, in fact I never really did, but I wanted it so I bought it back at the beginning of 2011. It was originally a BL management car, then had one long-term owner and then the chap I bought it off, who had it a couple of months, before I bought it I have hardly driven it, mainly because just after buying it I bought another Morgan and needed the garage so took it down to West Wales and left it with my brother. Effectively I tried to forget about it, always thinking I'd get it on the road for the summer, well several summers have passed and I never did. Earlier this year when I was down there I was talking to my brother about it and he mentioned that it was deteriorating, I took a look at it with him and was quite upset by the state of it. My brother very kindly got it up and running and mot'd, he now needs the space so leaving it there another five years is not an option. To get it going he has stripped and cleaned the brakes up, replacing a rear hose which had collapsed. The clutch slave had seized so that has also been replaced. It needed a new battery and one headlamp, also a piece of fuel hose which was showing signs of failing, the tyres were new when it was put away but obviously are five years older now. He took it for the mot and it passed. Bear in mind this car has stood for five years, it has not been serviced so that certainly should be done. I would also recommend replacing the rest of the hoses, fuel and water as they are probably the originals. Having said that it drove back very nicely, temperature nice and steady. Starting it this morning I did notice what sounded like a very slight blow at the exhaust manifold, but once warmed up this disappeared. Also the first few changes of gear seemed a little notchy until it warmed up, so possibly needs the gearbox oil changed; although from memory thay are all like that. Structurally it is amazingly solid for a TR7, sadly the storage has not been kind so any paint chip has bloomed, a good wax and polish and dry indoor storage and it shouldn't get any worse; however leave it outside and it won't take long before it's wrecked. The worst spots are on the edge of the driver's front wing, the nose cone and a spot on the passenger front wing; these are salvageable, but need doing soon before they get any worse. The headlamp pods are aluminium and the paint is literally falling off these, passenger side it's nearly all gone and the driver's side is starting to lift. The interior is not too bad; however the driver's seat cushion is very worn and the carpets have faded. The hood is the original and is very good, the windows are still quite clear and that is without cleaning. I have replaced one press stud, but there are a couple of others on their way (They all do up but are plastic and are going brittle) There is a hood cover, the outside of it is fine, but on the inside the cloth and foam are rotting, it's still useable and looks ok when fitted as you don't see the inside. As I have said the thing which lets it down is the paint, it's a shame as when put away it looked great, now it doesn't. The underside is great, but does need some protection on it if it's going to be used in the wet. If you've read this far, then well done, you must be bored. Bottom line, it's a very solid, unmessed with, car. If it's looked after now it shouldn't get any worse, neglect it (like I have) and it's not going to last long. I've looked at what they seem to be selling for and the prices are all over the place, £1500 is about the top of where it's likely to be as it stands, I am open to cash offers, but do not need another car so sorry no part-ex's or swaps. richardmorris, johngarty, Dippy and 10 others 13
richardmorris Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Headlamp pods do the same on X1/9s. Looks like a decent base for a restoration project. Uncle Jimmy 1
Jim Bell Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Worth it for the happy shadow the steering wheel casts on the seat base alone.
johngarty Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Love these cars. Had one in the late 80's in silver. Paid around the same price after masturbating over it passing the showroom for a month when commuting. After about 6 months a bloke at the refinery I was working with offered me 2 grand virtually unseen. Was paid in cash and asked to drop it off at the docks. Apparently it was shipped straight to the states, no doubt for a tidy profit.Fantastic car though, fast as fuck and a real fanny magnet. GLWS
Uncle Jimmy Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Mmmm Kermit green too. Last year of unproduction.I'm becoming aroused.
anonymous user Posted July 3, 2016 Author Posted July 3, 2016 I've just come back from a very late lunch, driving it is like being young again, the original Radiomobile radio is just mw/lw so very few stations available, ended up on one playing late seventies/eighties music so soundtrack by the Smiths and Supertramp. Called in at my mate's yard so some sunshine pics. strangeangel, mercedade, Tam and 8 others 11
Skizzer Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 I'll wager that's one of the very earliest convertible ones, perhaps the oldest left (said every eBay advert ever). It's a very handsome thing and Triton Green suits it superbly well. But convertibles are even more haram to me than sunroofs, so sadly I'm just going to say GLWTS.
Lord Sterling Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Saw a minty one of these on the M25 the other day, same colour and same wheels I think, reg; LOG7X. Have pic, need arsed to put them up. GLWS
anonymous user Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 Well it's out there nowhttp://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C762781http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252449582514?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 If anyone is interested I am open to sensible offers. Although I await the not so sensible ones from ebay
vulgalour Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Just so you know, I really want this but I can in no way afford it and you've already ruled out part exchanges on things like non-running Renault 6s with no gutters.
Heidel_Kakao Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 GLWTS - it's very nice. What are the wheels off? "When I bought it the MGF alloys and new tyres were fitted to it, unfortunately I do not have the original wheels." Wilko220 1
cort16 Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I love this colour. A series one SD1 S manual in triton green is what I rub my trousers over when I'm sitting at home late at night, in the dark.
JohnDeere Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I remember talking to you about this at Shitefest, and I'm oh-so-tempted, especially as I've fancied a wedge for a while now. But I just don't have the time / patience to take on another project ... I'd rather devote my energy to getting the Visa tip-top and keeping the Prelude's tinworm at bay. I bet I'll live to regret that, and will never find another one as good/cheap. So just in case, do shout back before you offload it to an eBay mong for £900...
anonymous user Posted July 5, 2016 Author Posted July 5, 2016 So just in case, do shout back before you offload it to an eBay mong for £900...Funnily enough that is the highest offer so far from ebay, I have counter-offered at £1200 which I would be happy with. The lowest offer of £500 I just declined, it wasn't worth the bother when someone thinks a third of the asking price is a serious offer. The new speedo cable is now fitted, so the speedo is no longer intermittent. I was going to do that myself, but seeing how far I'd have to crawl under the car to get at the gearbox end I took it to the garage down the road and they stuck it on the lift and did it in about 10 minutes. Bear Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 £1200 Jeez If I had my S-class sorted and XJS gone I'd almost be tempted to sell the SLK for this. it looks SO right.
holbeck Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I love this colour. A series one SD1 S manual in triton green is what I rub my trousers over when I'm sitting at home late at night, in the dark. Funnily enough, I like this TR7 because my dad had a Triton green SD1 in the Thatcher era.
Insideimsmiling Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I have been thinking seriously about a TR7 as I remember wanting one when they first came out and seriously looking 15yrs ago when I bought my first Scimitar SS1 instead. But as I have no garage at present it would as you suggest just be unfair to the car to let it rot outside.Plus Ebay idiots mean I now have my MG TF lingering on my drive along with my MGF and so I really do not need another 2 seater sports car.
anonymous user Posted July 6, 2016 Author Posted July 6, 2016 Well my best ebay offer so far is £1k and I think I might have to accept it, but I bet they will then try to knock me down if I do. I do have one bloke who wants to come and see it, originally it was to be this evening, but he's now put it off until tomorrow morning. Despite me putting in the advert that I would prefer people to either come and see the car or at least talk to me before making an offer, so far nobody has. I assume most of the 107 watchers are people on here. I brought the Land Rover back today and have now run out of space therefore I do need it gone quickly; also everytime it rains I feel that I can hear it starting to fizz, I don't think it's been left out in the rain for over 30 years. Have I mentioned that I hate selling cars.
anonymous user Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 (edited) and it's gone. In the end it has sold to a chap fairly local, whilst I would have liked a little more he did at least better the best offers that I had via ebay. I have taken it over to him and very nearly didn't get there, as a woman pulled out of a lay-by straight across the front of me, I'm pleased to say that it still has very good brakes, she then panicked and wheel-spun backwards nearly into a barrier. I've just had the fun of trying to end the ebay listing as it woudl be just my luck to have had someone hit the buy it now afterwards. I forgot to mention that the new owner is obviously a man of taste as amongst other things he has a V6 Sterling Coupé Edited July 9, 2016 by anonymous user egg, holbeck and Bear 3
