Car tax by month to month

Recommended Posts

Not taxed a car for quite a while but going to put the mgf back on the road soon and was wondering how the new system works.

Question is, if you tax it say, tomorrow 8th of the month does your tax start then or the beginning of the month meaning I'd lose 8 days of tax??

I'd love to see how this pans put in court if someone bought a car mid month and didn't tax it till end of month. They only refund in full months so PO would have paid for said month already.

That said it was will worth the £20 to drive the MGF for the last five days of April.

Sun out, roof down. Beautiful.

~Why wait until the end of the month? It's going to cost the same amount to tax it regardless.

To be fair, I'd grin and bear it for 8 days. To be fair, I usually grin and bear it anyway. Bought the RAV on the 18th June I think. Barely drove it that month due to the duff tyres. Meh.

I taxed one on the 1st at the post office, I asked to do it by direct debit which was fine but I was surprised that they didn't want any cash upfront and just said it'll come out on the 15th of every month

Yes, but your talking to a Yorkshireman!!

Your first payment often goes out in the middle of the month, BUT the rest of the instalments go out on the 1st of each month

^this^, first payment is always 14 days / 10 working days from setup, all subsequent payments will be on the first.

This means that if you don't set it up till late in the month, the first payment will be double.

I did one of mine on the 20th or so of april and 1st payment was a double one on about 7th May.

I like to forget to tax them and wait for the fine to come through the post.

Quite like the new monthly system tbh, means I can tax and sorn things at will and not have to put loads of cash upfront or wait for refunds

Monthly also works out cheaper than 2x6 months

Important to make sure the direct debit is cancelled though. I paid for a month on the Omega I bought for Supernaut because they didn't cancel it. Awaiting refund now...

Sometimes if you sell/sorn near the end of the month the direct debit will still come out, I've always had automatic refunds the following month tho

For a DVLA system, it works quite well I have to say

Question tho which I haven't been able to find the answer for, have they scrapped the requirement for insurance to tax a vehicle now? I've taxed vehicles online the same day I've insured them, so it wouldn't have been on the MID yet.

Went and taxed it yesterday, lost 8 days but payment not coming out till 22nd then 1st of every month.

Not bad really.

If it makes you feel any better I taxed mine on the 29th may for the bank holiday drive out

Don't think the new system's changed anything here, was always the case if you taxed a car mid-month you paid for the full month.

There is a backend system to the MID which is instantaneous, this is the one DVLA use (sadly there isn't a similar system for MOT's), the askmid.com that we use is somewhat delayed.

Source: I noticed the same thing so asked my insurance company.

The vosa dvla link are not so quick, I got someone to mot my hippo and it took 6 days to show as moted,

The strange thing was total car check showed me it had passed the very same evening.

This is where I wish it was feasible to send DVLA a shitty letter, explaining I intend to fine them for taking my money for a service which I didn't require.

Interestingly, I had my daily MOT'd on Monday and saw them bring the car out, but there was a queue of people before I got served. So I checked online and the MOT history check site had already updated with the results (pass, btw)

Maybe they've updated its updating speed
