I went with a friend to look at a car he wants to sell to clear some space (more deets on the car laters)

While having a nosey round his car I saw this and wondered what its for ?

Spin it to select the symptoms that your poorly autobox is showing, and then do the fixes in order from top to bottom with everything after the * being with the gearbox removed.

Quite nifty.

Someone ought to knock up a Renault one where A through Z is "It's fucked" and the * represents the point you call CarTakeBack.

The car had folders of paperwork so I snapped some for your viewing pleasure,

Seventies top of the pops style

And plenty of colour not like modern grey brochures.

Just look at the colour choices.

And I have never seen anyone get awarded for appearing at a one make show with the wrong car.

Do us a favour and spin it around to "transmission overheats" and post another pic of it!

The car is in very good condition with only a wing and a rear arch tub showing slight bubbling.

That's rather nice!

It is a real sweet motor but he wouldn't sell me it even at double what he paid which was a bit disappointing as I have never owned one yet.

I can remember seeing it on ebay as it had been of the road for a long long time, but that never fazed him as he drove down with his fither and drove it back on trade plates complete with sticky brakes.

Ooof. I spy local Southend registrations on that (both the BHJ 501S and the YHJ 1 private plate it used to wear). I would guess it was sold new by the main Rootes/Chrysler dealer Holmes & Smith in Westcliff, or maybe it was Currie Motors by then.

I've never owned one either, but I have driven a few, both pre-and post-facelift.  I always thought they felt better-made than an Escort (here's probably the only place I could say such a thing!).

I plan to drive this one at some point and then I can tell you for sure with a back to back test.

2011 was last time on the road apparently

Thanks, checked the online thing via Conrad.

I must admit I would never have even considered an avenger until being faced with this one which is a pretty good example,

Anyhoo I popped over to see the car he wanted to sell but I've just realised I only have these pics of it so not much help really,

I think he said he wanted £600 for it but if anyone is interested I can go over and take some better pics if I don't get distracted again that is.

It is a 2.9 but I know diddly squat about jags so no idea on its spec,

It has been off the road since 06/07 so I expect it will need a bit of coinage to get road worthy again.

Posted

It looks ace, if I was gonna get a jag it would be a cloth-trim 2.9, its like a grey-grilled jag 'BASE'

Posted

There's something about a 2.9 that really appeals. Where abouts is this at garbaldy?

Posted

It is in storage around the reston area, a farm on the A1 next to the speed camera.

It's here,

It's not quite perfect but ticks quite a few of the essential boxes, for maximum wrongness you really need an early model with the troublesome electrics, 2.9, cloth trim, hupcaps, manual gearbox, flat red paint...all the hallmarks of a Jag bought new by someone who had probably worked hard and saved up for years so they could just afford a new one.

That really is complete poverty spec - it doesn't even have rear head restraints! The only extra it seems to have is the automatic transmission.

These early cars are actually quite rare now. This one looks to be in very good condition bodily, at least as far as I can see on the photos.
