Big weekend collection (a cautionary tale p2)

Sorry to hear of your ordeal Dicky, I'd have been fuming and it's only an hour or so away from here. Misleading bastards like that ought to be subjected to a lifetime of shitty ebay buyers who never pay and never turn up as recompense.

Please let us know when it's relisted as I'm sure Scotoshite could make a point of viewing* it...

Incidentally if you ever spot something you're interested in up here let one of us know and we can scope it out/kick tyres/make notes on your behalf.

At least the borders are quite pretty.

When the careers of the sellers as motorhome dealers goes down the pan they're a shoe-in for the Cumbernauld United Netball Team.

Will do Adrian, and once I've negged and blocked them feel free to go and kick their tyres. There's a rusty Marina sitting on the drive too, and a MK1 Transit outside for your delectation.

The seller claimed she was going to put it into a garage to get the engine sorted out before advertising it again, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it pop up for sale again very soon with still no mention of the many faults. People like that just don't learn.

This is unbelievable, I'd have gone nuclear at the little shit claiming they knew nothing about the camper!! Thankfully you got your money back.

We once took two defenders with Ifor Williams trailers 200+ miles to Suffolk to pick up a dismantled Series 1 for someone on here. It had been described as "very original" with all welding done and just needing reassembly; certainly the pics and a talk on the phone gave confidence.

Needless to say the chassis needed about six weeks of welding - there wasn't even any body mounts - the very original bodywork was from 3 different vehicles with two different number plates screwed to panels, neither of which matched the V5 it came with. Engine seized, bits missing, yada yada. Left empty handed but the moron continues to post on various LR forums about his restorations which are equally shit.

Looking at the pictures, I think I would have gone for it at £1.5k

Having read Dicky's road test I'm pretty sure I wouldn't.

Well done on getting your money back from these mouthbreathers, and a shame you had a wasted journey.

Oh, and if you've still got the MOT certificate, that needs to fall into the nearest shredder asap ;)

It was the cheapest MoT'd coachbuilt on eBay, but I put that down to the short MoT, the location, the obscurity and the brief description.

I confirmed with them on the phone, twice, that the van was roadworthy and drove well with no problems before I made the journey. They completely lied. If anyone else tried to drive it they would come to the same conclusion as me. It was absolutely fucked, a major project and had been sold to me in good faith as a roadworthy vehicle. It was nowhere near roadworthy.

It was probably worth about half that money (£700 or so) as a project, but it needed a LOT of work to the mechanical side. The camper part was ok, if smelly and the water heater looked like it had been at the bottom of the sea. The cab had had plenty of filler and shitty MoT welding but I was aware of this. I didn't even look underneath, apart from when looking for somewhere to attach the towrope.

Buy shit, get shit. Feedback also has clues oif "location a lie" as well. Lots of caravansx in the ovlov pic,no?

One of the lads on here had a similar thing when he bought a shagged out car that was 'MOT ready' yet needed more welding than a Fiat 127 that'd been lying on the bottom of the dead sea for 33 years.

I did see that. Amazingly, the camper was parked outside the house in the photos which was also the address on the V5. It was just everything else that was shit about it.

I feel your pain. I had a similar experience with a Bedford Rascal pick-up a few years ago. I didn't leave negative feedback as the guy threatened to burn my house down and I honestly believe he would have done if he could have been bothered to drive the 140 miles...

I'm still angry about the whole episode now...

The ovlov is back on for £350 with no V5. "Mot in 2014."

So were lots of other cars.

If that's where I think it is, then you were lucky to get out with your wallet and the Rover...

I'm tempted to go for a look. It's close to me. Any Fifers fancy a laugh?

Worst that can happen is I buy it. Just not for £350...

I really feel sorry for you Dicky, i know how excited you were when i saw you the other day, at least it gave you some good father son bonding time, If i had done it with my dad i think he would have killed me before I'd even driven out of the county.

I know exactly where it is, I drove past it this afternoon.

I got the impression that while the sellers were terminally stupid and they lied about the condition, they weren't violent or nasty people. I was reasonable and polite (a LOT more than most people would have been) and I did get the money back. I chatted to them about old cars for a while before I realised how misdescribed the camper was, and they seemed genuinely enthusiastic (had enough old motors lying around anyway).

Was it still parked on the road outside the house next door? That's where we left it after unhitching the towrope...

No, it was on the drive. The Mk1 Transit was on the street outside.

I believe that area is known as Chinatown, even though there was never a Chinese community there.

I'm going for a nose..

Chinatown is behind the Vic, I lived not far from there.  It was a no go zone for years, and I got a Raleigh Chopper and the 3 sticks of Juicy Fruit stolen from me when I ventured in. I was chewing the gum at the time. I had to plead to keep my shoes....true story. What is now the Co-Op was once the Lister Bar, where Jocky Wilson learned his sport. It looks like Smeaton from the pics- between Dunniker Way and Hayfield Road.

Not quite. In fact the avenue in question might well have been named after the aforementioned darts player.

It must be a camper thing, I went to look at a Talbot Auto Sleeper Talisman in Lincolnshire. When I got there the address was a farmyard in a little village, the camper was parked on the verge in the entrance to the yard and I was greeted by two extras from Snatch. They both immediately started admiring my Toyota Hiace van much to much for my liking, so I steered things towards the camper. It wasn't too bad, the biggest issues on first inspection were the electrical maladies, so I took it for a test drive. We got out on to one of those long fenland roads that leads up to a sharp bend at the far end and I decided to get it up to sixty or so. I've got a few years experience driving sheds, so when, nearing the sharp bend at 60, I turned and said calmly to the the dark haired leather jacketed giant in the passenger seat, 'the throttles stuck open', he said something along the lines of, 'flick the ignition off, to be sure, why don't cha', it was then I discovered that the ignition switch didn't turn off! Needless to say I didn't buy it on the spot. They did all seem to be problems that could be fixed fairly easily, so I spent the next couple of days texting and messaging to ask if he could confirm her had the V5 and I could have a receipt... He never responded.

Bad luck on that Mitsubishi, I can see the attraction. As many have said, I think you did well not to lose your cool.

I think i would have gone all Falling Down on their sorry arses.

Perhaps this time, take something other than the Chopper? And definitely don't wear your white loafers.

The shittiest bit about this is they knew you drove 9000 miles to get it and made no effort to stop you doing it, recommended you brought a trailer or made sure it was working okay.

If you'd only being going 20 miles or so it might have been worth going through with it.

I think you did well to get your money back so not all bad. I bet BarryCade was watching this thread nervously incase he had to drive you and the camper back home.

Yes, my thoughts entirely Cort. If it had been close to home I might have been more willing to haggle and take it on as a project, although having said that it had far too many things wrong for me to want to take it on even if it had been half the price. 450 miles is a long way to drive any vehicle, and that one broke down four times in the space of 300 yards from their house.

That did occur to me as well! I don't know which contractor my breakdown insurance (Equity Red Star) use in the Fife area, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Barry's company.

I'm a bit older and wiser now, but still miss the Chopper! Never did get it back... This place is the no mans land between Chinatoon and The Valley. Was my route to skool back in the day, the very same skool as Gordon Brown attended, and no, maths isn't my strongest subject either...
