cros Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 This is the last to go in my clearout sale. I can't really justify keeping it now that the NHS send one of their own to pick you up when you're poorly, though the modern colours are loud, and those fucking sirens... This has a bell, much more civilised. Top speed used to be about 45 which weeded out those unlikely to recover, thus easing the shortage of hospital beds. In keeping with the rest of my vehicles, this one is incorrect in every detail. I bought it in 'totally fucked' condition, by which I mean that it was in two separate pieces. With nothing left of the original wooden frame I made a new one from steel tubes. Theres a lot of roundy bits which entailed much swearing, but eventually I put all the panels back on and after quickly 'dropping in' (irony) a Transit engine this is the result. I had ideas of converting it into a camper and to that end I altered some of the inner appointments to ease its future transformation. Thats why the stretcher sits on a box that converts into a double bed, and the floor at the rear is dropped in readyness for the installation of a shithouse. It 'drives nice' with its Di engine and 5 speed box. Its happy at 60, has got a big heater under the seat like buses used to, and boasts my usual sops to the modern world such as hazard lights and indicators. The original semaphores are still there if you fancy being broadsided by a Scania. I want about half the price of a VW splitscreen for it which is still firmly outside shiter territory, but very cheap for all the sweat thats gone into it.The ambulance sign lights up. anonymous user, Coprolalia, strangeangel and 39 others 42
strangeangel Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 That's magnificent, hope it finds a good home.
brownnova Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 That had me chuckling!! Great ad, super looking ambulance. GLWTS!
spartacus Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 I could just park that in a heated garage and look at it. Much cooler than a VW bus in my opinion. eddyramrod, mercrocker, strangeangel and 1 other 4
dollywobbler Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Wow! This sounds ace. Though obviously, is worth far more money than I have available. Like most things to be fair...
skattrd Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Cros - nice ambulance, but unless I'm missing something you have omitted a price and location (like most of your other adverts).I am potentially interested in this ... depending on price.
purplebargeken Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Holy fucking hell. I will say no more. Location, South Lincolnshire, Regarding price coyness, here is not the same as ebay. The other day I had 'has it got enough petrol in it to get back to Wales' (real). scruff, anonymous user and strangeangel 3
Justin Case Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 This ambulance features on a DVD 100 'Classic Commercial Vehicles' which I think was filmed about 15-20 years ago. Is it you describing how you rescued it from a scrapyard and restored it or was that an earlier owner. It had a Bristol coat of arms just below the Ambulance lettering on the side and is one of the earliest LDs left. I hope to be moving shortly, so the lack of a Luton rules it out for me but GLWTS, it's a real bargain for someone at the price. HillmanImp 1

I have pictures of the work being done, and ominously it was outside. One side was an inch longer than the other. I was also told about an one that got chucked into the sea and sunk completely in an episode of Heartbeat or its spin-off the Royale. I was convinced that it must have been this one because of the state of it but after enduring half an episode of the drivel I found the bit where the ambulance zooms off the end of a pier and it was a later vehicle. I can only assume that the timber used was old shuttering found in a builders skip. That was a previous owner saying how he 'rescued' it. I bought it on ebay (where else?) and was presented with a VHS tape of a film it was in. I never watched it and can't remember what I've done with it or what its called. It looked shit though. MarvinsMom Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 plleeeeassssssse tell me the bell works? when i saw the tiltle of this thread i nearly didn't bother looking, as i had expected some surfer van glamping thing. on reflection, i'm so glad i did look, cos this is so, so full of win!! i hope it goes to a good home, and i congratulate your skilllz in bringing this back from the dead! stephen01 1
trigger Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 I didn't click on the thread earlier as I thought it was a VW too, but this is a zillion times better. strangeangel, chaseracer, Joey spud and 1 other 4
mercrocker Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 This is one of those posts for which a simple "like" button is not enough. I had a converted ambulance (CF) as my first camper van but I would live in this just as it is. So, so mid-century. Even the fittings are all crimson so the blood didn't show. "Just bite your lip for another 10 minutes sonny, we will soon have you in hospital" I am going to pray to St. Rusticus (Patron Saint of Shite) that no bearded steam-punk or hipster buys this to sell blinis or espresso out of. cros Posted April 12, 2016 Author Posted April 12, 2016 The bell is a 'Winkworth' and has a coil with make and break contacts inside which make the clapper go like the clappers. I've been informed that my Winkworth is small (I cope) and that there was a larger model, presumably for bigger emergencies. I give it a ring if I pass a modern ambulance (parked up, obviously). The internal arrangement originally consisted of the bench seat which is still on the nearside and a stretcher 'bed' that had a wind out mechanism so that it could be converted into seating. All the rear windows were clear and could be lowered; this allowed rain to run down inside the body and rot the frame. With the pillars dissolved the roof eventually became detached. One feature I don't understand is the front passenger seat. It is one and a half times the width of the driver's, perhaps to accommodate a person with 3 buttocks. chaseracer, purplebargeken, Justin Case and 1 other 4
Louise2cv Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Put the telly on right now and I think the sinking ambulance moment might be about to happen on the royal. Such a cool looking thing, hope it finds a good home.
cros Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 Just found a photo of how the LD was when I got it. The wood frame everywhere had completely rotted away down to the level on the door post. I got a few funny looks when I pulled into the yard with it on a trailer; I now know they meant 'twat'. strangeangel and anonymous user 2
lisbon_road Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Fantastic. Dead impressed (sorry). Good luck with sale, surely worth publicity to get a good price? Really respect your wish to get it a good home though.
Joey spud Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 There are some very skillful and dedicated people on this site. ''Skills pay Bills'' excellent work sir.
