No fuel available here any more, but I spotted this beauty whilst up in Newcastle this week:

K5MFKKm.jpg

According to this:

http://www.spenceanddower.co.uk/portfolio/dex-garage-newcastle-upon-tyne-1931

It originally included rest and washing facilities for chauffeurs awaiting the conclusion of their employers’ business or entertainment in the city centre; a car lift and turntables to transport these large chauffeur-driven cars to an available parking space; washing, servicing and refuelling facilities as well as a new car showroom.

You don't get that at Blue Boar or Clacketts Lane.

^^^ what I’d give to travel back in time and see some of these places in full operation...amazing!!

It's still open as a multistory car park, I parked up there last year. The best thing about it is that the offices at the front are abandoned and still full of 1950s office equipment.......

My local "servo" as we call them here, soon to be no more

It closed when a new one was built on the outskirts of town as this one was old and on a prime bit of land

The owner lived in it until he died 2 years ago (at 101!)

And gone

This used to be a place you could buy fuel, so I'd like to share it with you here, even though probably it ought to go into an Architecture thread... Manor Road Garage, East Preston...

What a place! I did a bit of digging, and when the place was cleared in the mid 00s, it offered up quite a feast of old tin. I wonder what happened to the contents?

Do we have an abandoned filling stations thread?

Nope. That's perfectly normal for Wales.

My first house when I moved out from my folks was a shared one with mates and I had the front bedroom (smallest), the view from which was this. When I moved away (2002) was still attended service. Can't vouch for if it's still open I'm afraid, but even then it was an oddity. Inside was just a big kitchen worktop with cupboards underneath and you just asked if they had... and they either did or didn't. They used to keep a stash of Rothmans Royals 24s in for me for when I ran out and was too pissed to drive to town. Looking at streetview it looks basically exactly as it did then, so it probably is still going. Good for them.

Here's My local petrol station and general play park for Shitters!

What's good about this one is not only can you not tell, nor can the proprietor tell you, if the cars are for sale or for the scrap but you get an attendant serve you your fuel!

Quirky, but often cheaper than the fake plastic stations up and down.

Bryn Saith Marchog, A94 Ruthin to Corwen, North East Wales.

I was also chuffed to see that Bala, half an hour away from us, got a rightful mention :)

The petrol station in Achiltibuie is more or less the same as when I was there in the 60's.

One pump outside Achiltibuie, I like the name, Stores.

Don't know how to put a Googly pic but worth a look if only for, probably, one of the most minimalist

petrol stations in the land.

Take a screenshot of the streetview, then find the photo in Pictures folder, usually, and upload as an attachment (under more reply options). I think I'd like to see it, so would others :)

Lumbards Garage in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, today.

Competitive on price considering there’s no supermarket in town, but best of all... Attended Service!

Refuelled in Vimperk in the Czech republic today. The sort of place that you just want to drive through ? Bloke at till was wearing shortie shorts, a cowboy hat on his bald head, a leather waistcoat with nothing underneath but suntan and greying chest hair/medallions, and a Nazi iron cross ring on his hand. Was too scared to take a picture.

Great article here from yesteryear about a petrol station on the A5 in Towcester.

Here is an image to tempt you in...... ?

Sadly the beige Princess with the great registration of ODD94W  is long gone :(

That place is still there, not as a petrol station but the canopy and shop are still the same.

It became a VW dealership in the late 80’s , then when they built a big showroom just up the road on the A45/A5 roundabout it became a Harley dealership. It’s now an independent used car place .F81CD30F-1BAE-477E-8A83-2226C89BC5A4.thumb.png.9b3ccc8f4b581a05777bac80e3e76920.png4B75EBA9-ACC7-4EB3-838E-F2DB49B19C89.thumb.jpeg.a4e8d912aa476e6f66676b338059d3f7.jpeg

Not so much a petrol station - but I have been photographing the geezer garages and yards in SE London. These are the little places in sheds, under arches or on vacant sites which are rapidly disappearing. Some great stuff - particularly the signage. Rotherhithe:

Heysham Village, picture taken two years ago, still has a Shell sign and behind the left side window under a pile of junk was a Lotus 7 type kit car.

Not sure what happened to the thread which showed this old gem when it was in active use until recently? This thread will have to do instead I guess.

Looks like the lot is up for sale. Talk about timewarp! Masses of potential for someone with skillz.

I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/123897002

Just spotted online. Just imagine a filling station being designed with such style now...
