Talk to me about: Peugeot Diesels

I know the 405's the darling of autoshite... So where better to ask?

I'm toying with swapping my Avensis for something more frugal. While it's not doing anything wrong, I am struggling to better 36mpg as she enters old age. I'm doing 105 miles a day and the potential saving in fuel is tempting.

Modern diesels frighten me because omfgdmf/dpf etc... But these seem to be the sweet spot.

What are they like to live with? Am I dreaming with thoughts of 55mpg? What spec is what etc?

There's one for sale ATM that could tempt.

Hope to hear.

I know what you're saying about the technology sweet spot. It's this logic that led me to the BX which is a bit funkier and I reckon satisfies my desire for something quirky better than a 405 would.

So in a completely unqualified manner I say yes... or BX.

55MPG is possible but boring, 45-50MPG is a more realistic average, lower if you do lots of urban driving obviously.

Have you got a link to the one you're thinking of buying? They are reliable cars, ask Junkman.

VAG cars fitted with the 90/110 TDI engines are the modern but not too modern diesel sweet spot I reckon, almost as simple as an XUD mechanically with some basic electronic control but they're as fuel efficient as a common rail diesel.

405s are comfier and handle better than VAG equivalents.

That said when I replace the boring it'll be with the same family of engine, probably in a more practical Skoda estate. The VAG motors are more powerful, easy to tune and get much better mpg than xud9/11.

I wouldn't have a non-turbo diesel, too slow and no more economical.

That spoiler would be factory fit.

I love then even though my last one was a bag of crap.

Smooth and comfortable but with sweet handling. I still think they are a handsome car.

Get it bought.

Oh and empty your pockets of 20p coins before you drive it to save yourself from epic handbrake woes.

The old XUD wasn't that economical by diesel standards. A HDI 406 might be a better bet, most of the 405s you see around now are old nails. That's to say the engine might be OK but the rest will likely be shot or it's seen more miles than the starship enterprise. You might drop on but I'd honestly doubt it. As people have said an old Passat might be a better shot, but you would be looking thick end of £1200 for one worth having.

I'll be the first on here to slag Vauxhalls off, they're lifeless bags of shit, however the old vectra DTI might suit, as they go on and on until you are very bored indeed, as diesels at the time went they were fairly good. Again you might chance your arm on a TDCI Mondeo, could be OK... One things certain though, the first sign of grief from Injectors, DMF or the pump will be its ticket to China.

That looks really nice and well looked after, get it bought.

I've owned a few non-turbo diesels, they're not as bad as the bare figures suggest but for long distance commuting I'd recommend a TD.

They didn't fare well in road tests, no, but in the real world high-40s MPG is realistic even at semi-hooning speeds. Even DW's big XM nudges 50MPG, XUD11 not 9 but very similar in principle.

I don't know what mine (TD) is doing to the gallon, I've never measured it. Seems pretty good though so will take a wild stab at 40+ round the doors, but who cares when it likes veg?

Very comfortable cars, get the feeling you could do big miles in one and step out like you've just been to the local shops.

That one looks really, really clean. Agree with Cavcraft - they are very comfortable (never driven one, just as a passenger and this was many moons ago).

No idea/personal experience of MPG but I do remember this from back in the day;

Brilliant bit of advertising!

My XUD7 turbo is hovering around the 50mpg mark according to my rough calculations, which is remarkable given I've not got round to replacing the prehistoric air and fuel filters yet.

BXs are a bit lighter than 405s though.

My experiences as a passenger in 405s (sadly I've never driven one) mirror everyone else's. Supremely comfortable and smooth with typical French car spaciousness. God knows how Peugeot managed to get it all so wrong later down the line.

My 405s were around low to mid 40s but that was mostly around town.

Handle really well when suspension is in good shape. Lovely cars

Non turbo, 45 mpg, mixed driving over 100,000 miles. Driving them.is all about conservation of momentum. Mine was a lot quieter at 85 than at 70.

I've been promising myself a diesel 405 for years after really liking my 1.6 petrol powered example.

Finally bought one this week and I'm loving it.

One thing I noticed, the super comfy seats in the Mi16 I had gave me an ache across the shoulders after about 50 miles but the basic LX seats never did.

That red one looks nice, the saloons are often in better condition than the estates which tend to be used hard.  Both, in diesel flavour are started to make money if really nice.  This particular one is the Quasar which was a tarted up base spec car, so no A/C unfortunately, most others will have it if MK IIs.  Rear spoiler wasn't standard on it.  Don't ignore the petrols, they're not really wanted, drive a bit sweeter and cost half as much.  (Yes sometimes it pays to look past the headline mpg figures.)  If you want the diesel go for the turbo, economy is similar and they're far more responsive.  N/A diesels are really slow but quite liberating in a way, as you develop a different style of driving (much like a 2CV I suspect).

I've eulogised enough about the pros of 405 ownership on these pages, suffice to say I've been driving one 405 or another for ten years, nothing else has that combination of comfort, driving enjoyment, space and economy of motoring.  Most parts are dog cheap from ebay/scrapyards.  They are bulletproof, reliable and come from that era of 90s French cars when rust proofing was at its best; none of mine has been at all rusty, unlike fifteen year old Fords, Mercedes and Mazdas.  Not only that but still look elegant and stand out from the crowd.

If ever I have to drive something else for any length of time, getting back into a 405 is like putting on your favourite pair of slippers again.

Thanks for all the feedback etc.

I have mixed feelings about Air Con.  Every winter I think "Ahh fuck it.  Don't need it. It's only Engerland." Plus all 3 of my cars have AC where the LED illuminates and that's it.

And then summer comes and I'm sweating like a nonce at the school fete.

The working professional in me says "You need air con dude". The shiter says "It's always fucking broken anyway lol".

I'm also looking at 106s.  I've got a 7 seater for when we're all together, the 190e which is perpetually broken and the wife's focus, so could do something small.

UPDATE: That orange one is a trader masquerading as a private seller.  No real problem, but I wish people would just be straight right away.

No history.  Had to apply for new V5.  No idea on belts.  "Lot of interest m8" so I've said "OK, well I don't want to add to your massive workload, GLWS".

If it's still around at the start of next week I might tap him up.

It's a reminder that buying cheap cars can be a pain in the arse.

Stop it.

Stop it stop it stop it.

Before buying the omega I was tempted by a mad torquoise 405 TD Quasar up in Inverness (LOL!).

However, on further investigation it was a bit of a dog. For example, the ad said 'long MOT' but it ran out in May. The central locking was dodgy, as was the sun roof, and some other things. They still wanted something stupid like £900 for it too.

I still want one though! A mate of mine back at uni had a lovely TD in a really pale green and it was like a cross between a sofa and a tractor. Sofa comfort with tractor noise. :D

I can't help but think a 406 does more things better than a 405 and easier to come by.

Even worse when they add insult to injury by pretending they were going "to make a retro ride out of it" to further pass off as their own car.

Knobs.

Is the 405 TD in Inverness still for sale? I guess it must be at £900.

Surprisingly not!

The 406 is a bit more grown up and heavy, the 405 feels like a big 205.

Thanks for the help so far.

It's a tough choice to make between the 405/406. I've agonised over this for what seems like a lifetime.

After much soul searching I've come to the only outcome possible...

...Lob a bid on a 205 with an mot as long as my flacid penis.

Fucks sake.

Judging by the safety write up they get, one supermarket ding and my children lose their father.

Wish me luck.

Just don't crash! 205s aren't that weak - you could easily die in a 5 star Euro NCAP rated car if you were in a horrible crash.

Let's see the 205 then.

That looks great, MOT history isn't bad, nothing for corrosion (not a guarantee of no rust obviously). Keep bidding.
