I've not driven a Ford since I had a mk1 cortina to drive around the fields as a kid (my brother tried to hotwire it, killed the ignition then used it for .22 target practice (bastard)), even the work vehicles I've driven haven't been Fords.  Perhaps a couple of tickets will be er, just the ticket?

27 & 48 Please.

I said to myself after the Prelude raffle that I wan't going to enter any more.

With that in mind, I'll have two lucky dips. please.

Thoughts?

I'll have it, if none of the interested parties step forward.

A bloke at work is after a new car (currently has an ancient Corsa C on its last legs and always needs something) and I convinced him that a newer (design especially) car wouldn't have to cost him the earth.

So I steered him in the direction of Fords. Fiestas.

He said he would love one, if it was red...

I could sort the bearing or whatever and play it by ear with the elec gremlins.

I'll drop you a line, but keep the raffle going just in case if that's ok?

Until the fez is gone, I'm on lockdown and can't buy any more shite.

Been talking to my workmate and he definitely wants it, and I can collect this weekend. Bourne.

Wanna sort it out, or are you letting raffle run?

Looks like overrun is taking this.

Jacked it up to see where this noise is coming from. It's definitely passenger side front. I think it's 1 of 3 things.

1. Bearing.

2. Buckled wheel. Trim is bent making this a distinct possibility.

3. Brake seized.

Will upload a few pics from underneath asap.

Nothing horrid to see here.

You're making this look far too attractive for an ageing shopping-trolley hatchback, you know.  Can't you pose it with some kind of ravening guard dog, like Billy does?

Shame it's not being roffled now as I would have punted on the old girl but I'm also glad it's going to a fellow shiter too. Win win.

PM'd you yesterday, mate.

Dunno if you got it?

Will text you to arrange times etc. :)

Forgot to update this.

Great to meet you, BorneIdentity.

Now, I think I need help...

The car was exactly as described, with this worn bearing type noise pronouncing itself above around 15mph.

The wheel bearings are play-free, and the wheels didn't become warm to the touch, even after a 200 mile A-Framing.

So, as Borne said, plus I and jikovron assumed upon inspection, the wheel bearings seem fine.

However, after the decision was made that the intermediate bearing on the O/S shaft was the culprit, and re-packing it with grease didn't work, I changed the shaft.

It was still making the noise.

With both sides up on stands and running in gear, one wheel was spinning as expected, and the other (O/S) was struggling round. Like a ticking clock.

I have never seen this before with an open diff, so thought that maybe it was that at fault.

I bit the bullet and bought a £40 'box. Unfortunately it was an 'AA' code and nothing like the 'AB' on the car, despite hoping it would just be a different final drive or something. Which wasn't fully revealed until removal commenced.

So...I bought the correct 'box. Fitted it today, and the noise is still there!

At the same time, I also whopped on some barely used front pads and discs, to rule out a warped disc, and because the others were fucked.

So far it has had;

New O/S drive shaft with intermediate bearing £105

65K mile gearbox (and incorrect 'box £40) £60

New diff oil £12

New clutch fluid/bled £4

Good, used discs and pads £10

It looks like the wheel bearing(s), right?

This is the most time I have ever wasted on a car lol. It seems to send me on wild goose chases!

Changing the 'box was little fun. Subframe down, steering rack mounts off, uprights off, bottom arms off, drift out N/S shaft through diff, blah blah.. A lot for a small 'simple' car.

So to sum up, it makes a racket like a knackered wheel bearing above 15 mph, in gear or not, clutch engaged or not. It is more pronounced when slowing down, and the bearings have zero play in them.

The only rotating parts left that I haven't changed are the N/S shaft,, and both wheel bearings.

I also read and cleared the DTC that was causing the EML. It was O2 sensor related.

Unfortunately, it has returned.

I am not moaning at Borne, btw. I knew I was buying a bit of a mystery!

Plus, the lad at work still wants it, as he and I know it is a good car. Despite all of this, it is a likable little thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be at fault?

Strange one indeed ?? I would have said warped disc after all that , but you have sorted that .

Hmmm....

Hey Man.

Fuck sticks.  I'm genuinely sorry that it's giving you grief like this.  I'm also amazed that all of the things you've done haven't made a blind bit of difference.

Sadly, I can offer no mechanical assistance  at all.  The only small crumb of comfort is your man will have the best 12 year old Fiesta in the country after you've done all this.

Oh - and I've amended the thread title/tag to hopefully get a bit more traffic to your post.

Again, sorry dude. Genuinely.

I suppose it is possible that the replacement box had the same problem (provided it is gearbox?)

Is it worth getting the front wheels off the ground and "driving" up to 20 mph while the car is stationary to see if the source of the noise can be more easily heard?

I had an odd noise on a car above 40mph which I was convinced was a wheel bearing but turned out to be a delaminating tyre. Once that was changed the noise completely disappeared. It was more of a "wuhwuhwuhwuh" noise and sounded horrid. Like yours it made the sound at speed regardless of whether it was in gear or not. So Maybe move the tyres about and see if the noise moves?

Posted

You need to get it on a four poster with someone driving it up through the gears while you listen through a big screwdriver on the hub carriers. Almost certainly a wheelbearing.

Posted

Yeah I've had wheelbearings grumble without any noticable play, they can't be expensive for something like this so I'd change them, if only to eliminate them.
