Noooo .... I thought you'd be getting a lift up there as I have a feeling it might be a shed and you won't want it and have to get home under your own steam.

Exactly, and he drove the umm from Devon to Lincs with off road tyres and virtually no steering. I have faith in my choices.

The York was a 2.4L the DI is a 2.5L, as Frank Gallagher said it should of had a York or Pinto on an X plate. But lots have been converted to the much better 2.5DI (later called the 'banana' engine due to manifold shape) as the York wasn't very good and the Pinto is a petrol, less desirable in a van.

I'd expect if the log book says 2.5 then it's almost certainly a DI.

 

 

I think only the (much) later Dis had the 'banana' manifold. Everyone who was selling one claimed the banana to be the best Di engine ever, but they're all great.

Yes your right, only the late versions of the DI had the 'banana' manifold. I've had early and banana types in mk5 smileys and can't fault either, though the last one I had, a V reg 190 LWB was a brilliant van and was easily the best driving van I've ever had, and that includes a mk6 transit and the current Sprinter company vans I've had since.

Theres more tons of shit talked about York diesels than you'll meet people who've actually owned one. I had one until 4 years ago so it wasn't exactly new. It had that monstrous 16 seat coach body with tail lift and was a good starter. This wasn't because of some benevolent fairy that made it go with magic, it just had heater plugs that worked and the engine wasn't fucked. Its not rocket science and though I'm a great fan of the DI I wouldn't chuck out a decent York if you can live with slightly heavier consumption- its quieter for a start.

All going well so far, it drives well for an old bus and the o/d makes the motorway quite pleasant.At 55-60 it sits happily and can overtake lorries if you really need too.

 

Only issue so far is that I was a bit aggressive with the indicator stalk and it came off. I've stuck it back in so it's useable. Proper fixes will occur at home.

I got free breakdown cover with the insurance, so no worries there.

 

I totally forgot to take a pez shot but I'll top up nearer home and get one then.

Nice one, interior shots too please, when time and light allows. Have you had a camper before or are you still marvelling at how you can stop wherever you like, get the pan on, take a leak, then go to bed, all in the comfort of a convenient cul de sac.

I've driven two different York-engined Transits - a Mk1 camper with overdrive which would roll along at 55-60, and a Mk2 transporter which, er, wouldn't.  Wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding in fact, and that was unladen.  Mind you DIs seem to be pretty variable too, and as you say the York takes a lot less cranking in sub-zero temperatures.

Got back to barmatt towers about 30mins ago. The cf didn't miss a beat and drove really well. Didn't want to stop tbh.

 

As I forgot to do a pez shot at the first fill up here's 2 to make up for it
