The OMGa Thread

details are thin on the ground with few pics, still I'm  gripped.

Admittedly the thread so far has been scant on useful details.

Supernaut has traveled this way to collect a car I looked at and bought for him nearly two weeks ago.

This car is indeed of the Vauxhall variety which might be a crushing disappointment to some, especially as it's not a Meriva.

While its traditional to travel a long way to collect a vehicle one is already familiar with, Supernaut has never even sat in one of these before, or driven one.

He was supposed to arrive at 12.05 yesterday which would have permitted us to provide needed detail during the afternoon.

We will intend to do that this morning instead, before Supernaut sets off on the rather long drive back north later today.

Please do not give up on this unorthodox and detail-scant thread yet.

For those who like minty old cars this will have a satisfying outcome.

So yesterday was an interesting day for me.

Instead of getting the 10:35 from Aberdeen to Birmingham, due to arrive at Birmingham at just after mid-day... I was 8 hours later than I wanted due to my flight being cancelled. The next flight was at 6:15pm from Inverness, so 5 of us were put on a bus up to Inverness.

The funnier bit is that a few other people on our flight managed to get onto a flight at 2:05pm... which was cancelled before us lot on the bus even left Aberdeen. Their next flight option was 7am this morning!

Anyway, after finally getting to RantingYoof's house at about 10pm last night, I can show you the reason, and the clue was in the title of the thread.

Yes, it is an OMGa, but what an example! Graphite black, year of MOT, 104k on the clocks and in immaculate condition. It's very very sinister looking (oh yes, it came with a box of all the original Vauxhall badges too, for you purists out there).

It is propelled by a 2.6 V6 and an auto box with 'sport mode'

My plan for today is to drive it from Northampton to Edinburgh, then stay overnight in Edinburgh in order to go to a very non-autoshite thing tomorrow morning (GT Scotland, lots of supercars). Then I'll do the final leg tomorrow lunchtime / afternoon.

Oh, and the best part... this car cost 3 figures.

I normally fucking hate Vauxhalls.

It also came with another pair of numberplates that aren't totally illegal looking. I'll be putting those on sharpish.

MOT history looks minty 2B fair.... ;-)

On way to Hellfrauds to buy stuff to sort out the pull-me-over plates.

I had to get out to admire Supernaut's extra long hose.

Hey that looks alright.

I love those plates, "I know what'll keep the ANPR off my back while I commit some minor crimes, I'll just black out the plates!!!! no-one will see through that masterstroke which is totally undetectable to any coppers" (apart from ones who have eyes FFS)

TL:DRs - skip down to big bold writing.

This all began Monday 22nd February.

Supernaut had been thinking about selling the Gaudi for a while and had spoken to me about various barges that may be a suitable replacement.

This came up for sale very nearby and on the Monday I got a semi-joking message from Supernaut saying "if you're looking for something to do you can go and look at that black Omega for me.."

So I immediately arranged a preliminary viewing, at which point it was noted the car was indeed one of the cleanest examples of an Omega I've ever seen. None of the usual door/arch rot and a very clean MOT record.

I spoke to Supernaut that evening and said that it's easily worth the money, but I hadn't driven it (didn't want to mess the private seller about). Supernaut was probably at this stage kinda regretting ever mentioning this to me, but went into an "in-for-the-penny" mindset which ended up with me going for a test drive in it after work the next day.

A bit of logistical conflabbery occured and Supernaut paid using electrickery means from his position far up where apparently there is Internet now. The seller kindly drove the car around to my house and put it on the drive.

That night, I went through the goodie bag of extras and spares (mostly the Vauxhall badges which had been taken off). I also had a proper look through the history and stuff.

The car has around 105,000 miles on the clock. It had an MOT in mid-February, so nearly 12 months. The only advisory on it was the handbrake travel. It's had recent new rear ditch-finder tyres put on it. It was serviced last October by the garage the seller works for, had gearbox oil change and all filters. Bills for these goods were all present and correct. It also had front suspensiony bits done on it - a tricky job.

It had 10 other stamps in the book, including a cambelt stamp only 20,000 miles ago.

I then peered closer....the date of the cambelt change was February 2012. Four years ago. Quick look-up of the Vauxhall Omega cambelt interval..... BOLLOCKSFUCKDAMN. Omega cambelts last 80k but the tensioners belm after just 40k, causing failure.

Cue a very sheepish message to Supernaut explaining that I'd been a fucking lemon.

Supernaut, instead of tactical nuclear striking my house, agreed that the car was a good enough bargain to warrant having this done, and to make things easier for him, I offered to arrange to get it done locally before he picked it up so he wouldn't have to worry about a thing.

This was done on Thursday (and then again on Friday when the garage stripped it back and re-timed it because the person who did it on Thursday had put the timing out by "half a tooth" - don't ask, as I didn't).

Supernaut being delayed by cancelled flights actually helped me as I was able to get the car back and make sure it was ready and waiting for him upon his arrival, which ended up being a lot later than it should have been.

THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT IS...

Supernaut now has an exceptionally clean wafty V6 RWD barge with a sprightly sport mode (and deactivatable traction control), which is MOTed for nearly a year, has no alarming notes in its MOT history, has a new cambelt/water-pump/tensioner kit as of yesterday, and has no other things that require doing (apart from a possible alignment adjustment).

The cost came in at under £1,300, and that's including the cambelt change. I've seen higher mileage tattier examples demanding higher prices than that nearby, so I still think this is a bargan, although this might be my brain trying to stop me feeling like a proper twat for not thoroughly inspecting the history...

Here are some photos, which I apologise for not being as forthcoming or presented as LIVE...

The car looking nice and frosty the day after it was delivered...

Clean doors and arches...

20160225_174047_zps9atvbcx0.jpg

Just the tips - it makes a nice enough noise anyway...

20160225_174102_zpsddldrzj8.jpg

After our trip to Hellfrauds we parked it up to tackle the properly illegal plates..

20160305_113108_zpsbek5zdnm.jpg

Let's get those off then...

20160305_113138_zpsoqfl8frm.jpg

20160305_113143_zpsynzvh7a8.jpg

Time to have a look at the plates that came with the car....WELL I'LL BE DAMNED...

20160305_113216_zpszri4eeyt.jpg

Hilarious as it is that a Scot has travelled a billionty miles to pick up a car that had obviously lived in Scotland before, the stupid message and raised carbon-effect plates are still not to Supernaut's taste. He has informed me that these will likely be replaced by nice bog-standard plates...

Let's get them fitted, anyway...

20160305_113603_zpsdp6fda67.jpg

That's far less illegal now...

20160305_114223_zpsg5nriddr.jpg

20160305_114237_zps1yypxxal.jpg

Other incredibly important things were then sorted...

20160305_114438_zpsn08w5hxq.jpg

Then it was time for Supernaut to depart on a 340 mile journey north to Edinburgh...

20160305_115957_zpsfttq9ji3.jpg

Departure time was exactly 12:00pm...

Would I remotely buy something for someone again?

ABSOLUTELY.

Great work!!!! These are a class motor I reckon. I proper fancy one!

That looks well smart, I drove a workmates 2.2 powered one a few years back and thought it was really nice, and a lad i know used to have a ex police 3.2 MV6 which was pretty horny with a stainless system and lowered, WOOD.

Looks ace. I really should get my arse into gear and put my MV6 up for sale.

At last contact (17:10ish) the car was somewhere north of Newcastle.

I imagine it's now halfway between the border and Edinburgh.

Only things of note, is that the "check oil" light has come on even though the dipstick is showing it above recommended level (although not tested on a cold engine), and the car is now misting up quite a bit and struggling to demist itself.

Not sure about the check oil light - it might just be a paranoid sensor - but from forum-hopping it looks like the pollen filters in Omegas can clog up in as little as six months, and it was last changed in October.

Posted

I'm in my guest house in Edinburgh, have been for about an hour and half now.

Pollen filter was on my mind, Yoof, but I just did the last 150 miles with the left rear window slightly cracked open. Did the job fine.

I'm almost certain the exhaust isn't just the tips... it sounds properly fruity when I go full BELM-MODE.

Oh yes, 500ml of oil shut up the 'check oil level' light.

Also, if anybody finds a black with red trim Geographical Norway jacket in the McDonalds at Woodall services, please PM me. I'm a fucking idiot. :(

Oh, I may be paranoid here, but I'm pretty certain the right rear wheel has slightly more camber than the left rear wheel. Common thing on Omegas? I really need to register on a forum for them at some point.

I'd like to get the alignment on it looked at too, as straight ahead isn't actually straight on the steering wheel, it's a tiny bit left of centre. This annoys my OCD.

Overall impressions are good though. For 'only' 180bhp it feels bloody quick, even without sport mode engaged. It just grumbles along and you're suddenly doing 80mph+

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that my rear number plate is actually slightly on the piss. Proper autoshite style!

Fuel consumption with cruise control set at '70' was fine. It still has bang on 1/4 of a tank left in it now.

Started off erratic but stepped into line well as acceleration gathered.

7/10.

I liked this fred, enjoyed the early bits which were reminiscent of a toosavvy monalogue in places, and a conceptual piece of drama about mans relationship with transport in others.

I also liked a bit where a man bought a car.

Rear camber could be down to trailing arm bushes but get an alignment done before deciding anything - could just be your eyes.

Top trams these, I had an R reg dizzler but ended up bridging it due to borked injection pump.

I live literally five mins from Woodall services so if it's been handed in its no trouble to retrieve and get it sent up to you mate.

I cannot wait to see this tomorrow (I'm meeting him in Edinburgh, sadly not with the LexBarge but in my new and very non-Autoshite Abarth 500...). Should be a fun convoy back up north, with a potential stop at Crail for you to test out the 1/4 mile time on the beast if you wish...

Will be nice to have a junior barge joining my LS400 and rantingYoof's old LS400 up north!  8)

Seriously?! Please please please go look for it. Black Geographical Norway jacket with red bits on it, grey hat, checkered scarf and skeleton fingerless gloves in the pockets.

Aye, the rear end of the car just seems to have a tiny bit of camber compared to the front anyway. I'm certain the right rear looks a bit 'off' though. Still drives fine, no untoward behaviour / noises and, as already mentioned, the MOTs are all fine.

I'm not in a position to drive this evening due to an afternoon on the shandys but if you give them a bell and it's been handed in ill nip up in the morning no problem.

I've managed to get hold of them and they said to phone Monday morning, as lost and found ends up in the office and the office is closed until Monday morning. So... yeah. Wait until then to find out.

Methinks a gyppo probz has a nice new jacket by now.

That's a decent looking Omega. Nice to see one in really clean nick as well. Well done.

I'm now at the point where I'm debating whether to put all the proper Vauxhall badges back on. I even got the original grille with it!

Plain number plates may go on at some point, but the ones on there right now are so naff they're hilarious.

Pollen filter has been ordered for the princely sum of £6.50 including 2 working day delivery.

I am now back in Aberdeen.

I think I was being stupid earlier when I commented about the right rear wheel's camber. I must have been parked on a really shitty uneven surface. It looks fine on a proper smooth surface.

Car goes well, I was annoying a Fiat 500 Abarth (driven by 17-Coffees) on some twisties earlier. He may have been flattering me though.

Also, I got 17-Coffees to blip the throttle of the OMGa while I stood behind it. The exhaust is definitely more thorough than just the tips. It bloody pops and bangs on the over-run!

Posted

I fitted the proper grille and centre caps earlier.

There were no other Vauxhall badges supplied, so the boot is just completely de-badged now. I may go past the local scrappy to see if I can find a Vauxhall badge at some point.

I've just ordered some plain number plates off ebay too. Can't be arsed with the naff 'born free taxed to death' Scottish ones.
