Since the Volvo joined the Puss fleet it has had issues with wheel balancing.

Rather than fix it by getting them balanced I did the sensible thing and bought a set of 15 inch steels from eBay with winter tyres.

They came today and so after the rainstorms stopped I slapped them on.


The old tyres are a bit knackered


The steels I think look better on it than the alloys. They are quite rusty so the plan is to run with them as they are for now and at some point to take them off, derust and paint them.

Discs could do with changing at some point


At this point my jack broke. Luckily the spare jack came to the rescue but I had to afford a fix

The clip that pulls up the wee ram came unclipped.

All fixed and back together.

A set of abs rings also arrived in the post, so that will be next job to fix the abs fault and traction control light. The car will then need an alignment to sort that bit out.

The brake light switch has come for the SMART so that will be fixerated in next couple of days.

I've been doing the brakes on the P2 this afternoon, they look pretty much identical even down to that clip, fiddly buggers they are! Looks like a lucky escape with those tyres too...

Tyres weren't great. It's like a different car with the new set on.

There is an estate up for sale in Warrington for £300 with MOT till June 2020. Missus SP has threatened violence if I accidently buy it... I had thought about buying it and then sorting out one good one between them and then selling/scraping the other.

Today I wandered over northern monkey motors in the turbo, smart turbo obvs.

Put the car on the ramp


It's a case of drop the front undertray down to access the brake light switch
someone has been in there before

We were ably assisted by garage dog


It fixed it initially but then it has gone to the old ways.

On a trip to shops tonight the car started being more random, interior lights kept coming on and off, central locking stopped working, headlight buzzer worked occasionally. I think it is going to be a SAM issue.

After I got the SMART off, Harmonic Cheeseburger had arrived for a quick fettle of his brakes

Post came from China this morning and this beauty came


An omp copysuede wheel. It is 320mm so a bit smaller than the momo which is better for autotesting.

The old wheel is nice but very large


Beauty of it being momo one is that the boss is already fitted.


The screws were a bit narled up so had to be careful getting them out. The new ones are a touch longer


Came with different horn connectors as well


You can see the difference in size


The horn buttons come in two very different styles. The momo one has a metal ring to fit it to the wheel which sits behind the centre part where as the new one sits in front of it but then has a plastic cover on top.

The new horn button broke almost immediately so I have put together the old one.



If I get a chance I will paint it black and it should be ok

It doesn't fit. The silver ring is a good fit (being from the momo wheel) and the horn button sits inside it but proud of the wheel

The OMP knock off is a recessed plastic piece and they don't go together.



In other news I found a boost gauge in my garage and fitted it this evening.

Launching onto the motorway shows that it is doing about 9 psi of boost...

It won't fit. The horn button then isn't raised enough to work. The metal ring isn't symmetrical one side is folded over and that is where button sits, the other side is flared.

Thinking Rover...

You've got fuel (we think), you've got spark, you've presumably got compression...have you got everything at the right time though?  If you've got spark I'd expect it to go on easy start.

Timing belt jumped?  Worth checking that TDC is where it thinks it is?

Also worth making sure the plugs aren't drowned in fuel by now...get them out, then attack them with a blowtorch to get them really hot, refit and see if you get any more signs of life.

nice looking wheel, can you fit the thin silver part behind the wheel then use the black trim on the front of the wheel ? mine is a very similar set up

Life has been a busy week in last week so no car work.

What did pop was photobucket saying it was going to delete my photos. I hadn't realised I had some on there.

I think I put up pictures of my sans before but came across some I had forgotten

Raised about £8k for charity with that one.

Previously managed to raise £4k with an escort


That got there but had only two gears, so to get home we spent a euro on this


What a beast.

Another saab - 8v turbo I think, bought fairly cheaply. Started cutting out when warm and I didn't have space to work on it. I sold it and the guy worked out it was the hall sensor breaking up



eBay purchase time - was something silly like £150, less than the guy had paid for the new exhaust. I was sworn to secrecy and told his wife it was double that purchase price


Super straight, super quick. Gearing sucked donkey Wang though as 70 was 4k. Swapped it for this



The guy who swapped it with me had bought it for drifting then realised it was fwd. Had the V6 in it but bugger all power. He then destroyed the 323f GTi by slamming and ratrodding a mint car.

Sold the Audi to someone on RR. Simmo from AS managed to help me break into it when I locked myself out.

Shat its gearbox on the way to a flight at Gatwick. Which wouldnt have been so bad except I had been celebrating/commiserating theast home game ever at my football club. So rolled in hammered at 6 am with us leaving at 7. Standing at side of M25 swaying and not being sick didn't make for a happy relationship - not helped by her breakdown cover only doing a 10 mile coverage.

Went through a run of xantias - so wanted to love them but never did



Also had a run of Volvo v40s - capable of yawnsome cars


All of them were written off in accidents so make them the most profitable type of car I ever owned - phact.

SMART has been having little electrical maladies recently including hill hold not working, car randomly beeping, central locking working intermittently, headlight warning buzzer working once in a while etc.

Often this points to SAM module. Following the evilution instructions I thought I would take it out.

The last thing to do is the bolt holding the power cable in. This should have a cover over it - it has gone walkies.

So basically need to get the SAM repaired/cloned. Will have to hunt on line for options.

In meantime missus Puss has been driving the 850 estate which she likes more than the smart...

Phoned a SMART specialist today about looking at the SAM module. It is £75 to check it, plus £12 return postage. If it needs cloning it will be £375.

 

Also messaged someone on eBay who fixes them and they can test and repair it for £250 including postage.

 

Bit of a dilemma - the SMART guy said it might be SAM but could also be another electrical problem.

 

 

Car mojo has been at an all time low so decided last night to have a go at project Volvo. There are a lot of little niggles on the car which I think are not massively difficult fixes but will make huge improvements.

 

First on the hit list is the check straps. Both front doors flap like bloomers on the breeze, which is a bit dodgy in car parks. New check strap ordered from eBay and it has been sitting in the car for a couple of weeks.

New one came with new bolts as well

 

The longest part of the job was fitting the strap through the hole in the door - luckily I wasn't bad at Tetris

All fixed.

 

The rear driver's door had been sticker bombed by an 8 year old, time to get the rest of them off.

The trim removal tools are good for this as don't damage the door

It's held on by a hidden screw

 

You can then slide the rubbing strip forward and off

 

I bent it back in, although it is missing the trim clips. They look like this

You can buy these clips new on eBay at £7 each! So not sure how to fix it


Passenger door is missing it's rubbing strip and needs de funking


And need to think about wheel trims for the steels I have fitted (come with winter tyres and solved the wheel wobble)

Is the module on the Smart something you would know about the insides of?

Yep! they get full of dry solder joints from memory. I've repaired a few, but it's been years since the last. Get a magnifying glass and look at all the solder joints for big things like connectors, relays etc and see if there's a ring round them (google dry solder joint for good pictures) then just give it a splash of flux and a dab of some nice leaded solder. You'll need a decent soldering iron and warming the whole board up to about 70c will help too.

The Rover has been looking forlorn over last month or so.

Currently the SMART is out of action and the mx5 has developed some idle issues, with missus Puss borrowing the Volvo I thought I would see if I could work out what is up with it.

I left it in the naughty corner after the car cut out at 70mph and wouldn't restart. Easy start didn't help. Fitted new coil, charged battery and changed the fuel filter.

Back to basics and start with spark. I have a connector that sits between HT and plug which flashes when spark is received.

On all the HT leads it showed nothing. Tried it with a screwdriver inserted instead and nothing with that.

Checked the king lead


Getting a spark through that, slightly yellow but looks good enough.

That means somehow the spark is going missing.

Whipped off dizzy cap and that looks clean enough

The rotor arm was given a bit of a clean and checked it was spinning

All looked ok. Back together and no difference. So new dizzy cap and rotor arm ordered - perhaps the new ones are just shit.

May ask Northern Monkey to change the rotor arm as that was what started this whole issue!

Had that with my old Saab C900. Everything seemed in order, but no spark. Also driving at 60 when it just cut out.

New rota arm and sprung back into life. (After having changed\checked\swapped a load of other stuff first)

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

New cap and arm came today.


Swapped the caps over first - easiest thing to do and less likely to screw it up


They look the same and of course no difference. Checked for spark and still no joy - it is going to king lead but no further.

So it is rotor arm next

It has a little screw to hold it on but the arm itself is very stiff on the shaft

Gently I managed to get it off and checked them together. The old is certainly worn


At this.point the heavens opened followed shortly by battery going flat.

I struggled to get the arm on so gently gave it some graphite lube and same for the shaft. Also used a little of wet and dry to clean up the shaft.

I got it mostly on but also realised that the shaft itself is actually moving in and out. Not a massive amount but did get me wondering if it just wasn't making great contact at the centre pin before causing the issue.

So plan is to charge battery, measure the length of the shaft needed to make contact with centre post and try that.


Then use fire when it doesn't work.
