As the tittle says, are lorries permitted in the third lane - non motorways?

I also noticed this BOC lorry was leaking a small cloud behind it, is it something normal or was there a fault?

I can`t find anything in the Highway Code other than section168 which mentions 3 lane dual carriageways... "you may use the middle lane or the right hand lane to overtake but return to the middle lane and then the left hand lane when it is safe "

Not sure when it comes to non motorways, I imagine Spud will be along with the definitive answer to that!

I was going to suggest that Bunch o' C*nts might be powering some of their wagons on Hydrogen, as I've seen similar off buses in London recently, but it's unlikely they'd route the exhaust under the tank regardless. As it's carrying liquid oxygen that'll just be the chill off a heat exchanger in the back. We get similar off the nitrogen tanks at work.

Oxygen boiling off as it heated up? I guess, despite probably being very well insulated, they only have a short life with storing the gas on board.

We have liquid argon delivered by one of those. Could be venting but more likely to be dry ice (CO2) boiling away from the fittings after a recent fill. When it's cold and damp you get all the fittings frosting up as the CO2 freezes out of the air. It's like the special effects dept. in Dr who round here sometimes.

Yes, because they aren't motorways.

Unless of course the Secretary of State or the LA have a prohibition order and if that was the case, the ought to have some signs up showing the prohibition.

There's one of those signs on the north bound A34 near didcot. Wish they had a few more about on dual carriageways. Bet they're rarely enforced though.

There's some more of those daytime overtaking bans on the A1 oop north.

I haven't been on the A34 for aeons. https://www.google.ie/maps/@51.5354939,-1.2940745,3a,75y,343.74h,70.22t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sD3eLDVewsbwRgf-SLauHww!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

It only appears to be for less than mile, up that incline which is Gore Hill.

A small list is here: http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2013-07-25a.238.1&s=section%3Awrans+speaker%3A12984

The trouble with having them on two-lane stretches is it leaves you completely snookered if a giffer in a Micra is snailing it in lane 1. I'd prefer if they didn't have these blanket bans, but a German-style 45 second to do it limit if your holding anyone else up. If there's no one around, take as long as you like. There's an overtaking restriction in lane three on the A23 London bound at Handcross Hill in Sussex.

Not only is it a steep hill, but there's a VOSA checkpoint at the top, so they wouldn't be able to pull you in from lane three.

On the 3 lane sections of the M621 through Leeds there are signs saying 'HGV use any lane'...

I drove through the cloud from a (stationary) leaking gas tanker a few years ago and it stalled my engine. I'm glad I wasn't walking or cycling past.

Thanks Chaps, it just look strange to see a lorry in the third lane.

HGVs are allowed on the third lane of motorways in certain circumstances, e.g., junctions 15 & 17 of the M8 in Glasgow.

I'm led to believe the answer is "No, unless otherwise directed"

Can go in any lane of the A38m in Birmingham too.

Good point caller - for those not familiar, there are entry and exit slip roads on the right around them parts.

And before the M80 peels off the M8, there's a very short section which is five lane (I don't think it's all dotted off)

Having been here for a number of years now, I've become used to articulated trucks a- being allowed to go as fast as everybody else and b- being able to use all lanes.

These have been cropping up all over recently though, as people tend to treat the lane they are in as just that. The lane they are in. Not uncommon to find somebody bumbling along in the fast lane.

A1[M] Washington N splits into left (Angel of North) or right (tyne tunnel).

Big waggons 56it up the sevices & make a rabbit dash to lane3 for tunnel. Can be unnerving for non-locals ;)

Looks like a new DAF CF aswell, euro 6, the exhaust is on the drivers side behind the front wheel.

Ive seen a few naughty HGVs in the fast lane before, infact, one was a fully loaded coach!! Cheeky barsteward.

and pre-limiter 3.5-7.5 tonners. And the minibus I used to drive was pre-100km/h limiter and used to be caned down the M4 flat out using lane 3 when required.

There is so much limited stuff now that can't get a sniff of the outside lane on a 3+ lane carriageway. :(
