I hate selling cars

Cheers Colin I might take you up on that as I have a feeling that they're going to try and pull a fast one, his daddy was talking about it possibly needing a new steering box which I hope not as they're £400, I reckon its just the bracket thats come off whatever it was previously attached to but as you pointed out-I do not need the DVS on my back. When he picked it up I noticed that the steering felt a bit light sometimes but assumed that it was just the steering box needing adjusting so I told the lad to get his (fat know-it-all) mate to do it asap obviously he took that to mean "drive about in it without doing anything at all to it" I am seriously tempted to stop buying cars because selling them is a sodding nightmare**no warranty implied or given

Why not just let the matter go to court? It doesnt sound like you`ve got any money so even if you lose what can they do? make you pay a pound a week? Send the bailiffs round to take your cushions?

Regrettably, things break and it is tough luck - you've not lied to them by saying it had a brand new steering rack or something. You can't predict something like that or be expected to do anything about it.I doubt it will go any further than that, disputes like this will happen all the time and I imagine in 99% of cases it is just chancers trying to get what they can out of the buyer because they feel they've been hard done by.Let them go to the police, might give them a laugh at least.

This is often why usable stuff gets scrapped/banger raced as there is no bother with comeback. Also its why car auctions exist, and why dealers make money on the part exchange process. It's due to convenience and total lack of hassle. My father has only ever sold two cars privately, one to a work colleague for £100 (a Austin 1800 that was 12 years old at the time) and one to my aunt. He would never consider selling a car to someone he didn't know well, precisely due to these comeback reasons.I'm a lot more flexible, but would hate to put anything on Ebay, or even Retro Rides to be honest. In point of fact I have had much more trouble giving cars away free, the 'save a classic' bit of Practical Classics attracted a right bunch of timewasters.

I believe there is a degree of protection on some safety-related items, even in a private sale.I think you need to get "official" and local advice on this. I'd be tempted to ask Trading Standards what the position is. You want to be absolutely sure of your rights and responsibilities if it does all kick off.

What a chump.I'd stick your ground, tell him that you made it clear to the buyer and fatso-mate that it was sold as seen, and that you were unaware of any problems. As you say it was priced relative to condition, any faults developing after a private sale are none of your concern. If the wheel fell off in three years time would he come knocking on your door? and surely he should be more pissed off with his fat expert mate who failed to spot the fault?

Ha ha cheers fellas for the support. will see what happens.

Why not ask on Pistonheads? Plenty of lawyers there but to me a car is sold ass seen and tough shit if it breaks

Can only concur with the above...2nd hand car is sold as seen if bought privately. If they wanted a guarantee they should have gone to a dealer.

This is a good idea, it will be good news. As far as I know the only thing that carries a risk of prosecution in a private sale is selling a stolen car or something equally fraudulent, if a person buys a car from a private individual and mows down a bus queue on the way home because of a fault with the brakes it is nothing to do with the man he bought the car off, he no longer owns the car and was not driving it at the time of the incident.

Let us know how this one turns out. We've seen both ends of the spectrum here now, you on the selling end and my mate rObOr on NSJC on the buying end.TBH they sounded like whinging grapsers from the start, it's a pity you couldn't have held out until the Watersplash, as most surfer d00ds are too busy being scene or going out with Toby or mashed off their heads to care about mechanical defects. His fat cunt of a mate should have spotted this fault if he's so bloody knowledgeable.

I put an ad on Carandclassic last night - have had seven emails and one phone call so far, which is quite impressive, but one of the emails is from someone with an @met.police.uk address. I'm not going to even entertain selling the car to him - even though I know for a fact that the car's a good 'un I've heard too many horror stories from people who've sold cars to coppers and ended up wishing they'd just scrapped the fucking thing.

Yeah, I just sold my Mercedes 190e to a copper on Saturday, after the deal he mentioned he was taking it to a local renowned Mercedes specialist to have it checked out  ....just gets worse!!!! I expect that'll bite me on the 'arris what with all the luck I've had of late.Still, at least Auf Wedersehen Pet is on tomorrow night.

Another comes tonight with his mummy (again I winced) and his fat 'know it all' mate, aforementioned rotund buddy squeezes his fat carcass under the van and proclaims that there is rust and holes everywhere so matey is convinced its a rotter underneath, now I know for a fact that it isn't but I'm desperate for cash so if the lad boy coughs up tommorrow i'll be out of a shitty cash situation, trust me though if I wasn't then I'd be the first to have told them to piss right off.

I apologise for my rant I've had a really shitty month and to cap it all (or not as the case may be) I have the most excruciatingly painfull abscess :(

Was this the same person that bought the camper?

If so they knew (thought) it was rusty and the price reflected that condition surely.

It all sounds like tough shit on their part - if I bought it I'd have just thought I'd "lucked" out and dealt with it - you can't win 'em all!

Stick to your guns and tell them to whistle :x

Well when I get their estimates through I might make a very small contribution and tell them that they inspected it, that its 35 years old and that I advised them to get the steering looked at at the time of sale. I will speak to our Citizens Advice Bureau and see what they say. I do think that our Driver and Vehicle Standards dept would probably be interested as they are quite anal about certain stuff.

So far about five offers of sending pictures and then no response, and an offer of 130 pounds. I spent more on that in parts in the first week of owning it. It's my first time selling a car on ebay - I've encountered some idiots selling on Pistonheads ("I'll give you 100 quid for your Starion" - "Er, no thanks" - "I'm walking away with it" - "Bye then"), but I fear I'm going to meet an absolute torrent of arseholes here. How can I make it clearer that 'I don't want crazy offers', than putting that in the formatted text underneath? F F S

I'm not being funny, but if you have a minimum price for it shouldn't you have listed it with that as a reserve? At the moment if you get no more bids it might sell for a tenner. :?

Alas you can't stop the terminally stupid. No matter what barriers you try and put in place you'll always get one or two (or more) idiots. The trick is to try and weed them out, though not always easy.

If you get an e-mail or pm response to an advert you can usually judge within first 2 or 3 messages if they're an idiot or not and then I just bait them or ignore them.

Nothing is sold until the cash in your hand, I always say promises don't feed my family.

It does take the piss a bit when buyers expect a new car for old money, "Of course its slightly worn gear knob you fucking imbecile its eighteen years old now fuck off" I had it when I sold the 1975 VW Camper that I started this thread off, I had a couple of different twats look at it and say "Yeah but this needs doing and that needs sorting" yeah I know that, thats why its not got a one in front of the asking price you utter nob-jockey it has been priced according to condition what the fuck were you expecting for that sort of money you fucking idiot?Funnily enough after getting his scouse daddy to phone me raging about this, that and the other accusing me of selling an unsafe vehicle demanding I paid for the massive amount of welding that it apparantly needed (that his expert fat cunt mate didn't see when buying it mainly because it wasn't actually rusty underneath) I never heard back from either little Lord Fontleroy nor his tedious scouse da, Result!

I spent most of today in the pissing down rain because some Welsh geezer rang me yesterday asking about the Golf. I told him it needed a wheel bearing (passed MOT, but noisyish) and a couple of other silly little jobs, and an oil change as it's not been on the road for three years, and that I'd get them done if he'd like to come and see it. He said "Can you keep hold until Wednesday if poss, I'm in work until 4pm and then I'll be straight over". Told him if it's gone, it's gone, but if he wanted to view then no problem.Of course, this meant that I had to do the few little jobs and wash it before 4pm. Not that easy when I had a mayhemic day on the cards anyway. Managed to sort it and get a few of the other bits and bobs done. Fixed a couple of wheel rim leaks, cleaned the alloys right up, hoovered it, fresh oil and filter, fixed the MFA connection on the gearbox, greased the locks and hinges, lubed the sunroof rails, re-programmed the alarm, changed the heater display bulbs, washed it, even adjusted the bloody glovebox lid so it shuts more pleasingly.Did he turn up? Didn't even phone.

ring his number from a pay as you go phone in the middle of the night..

Makes it a very good idea to get a contact number from the caller if you haven't already - not to stick in the bogs necessarily, but perhaps someone who's given you their number will be less inclined to f*ck you about?Either that or say "you are actually going to show up aren't you? When people don't turn up, I get stabby..."

^^^WHS. I've just sold my mother's Yaris, and the amount of arseholes we got who wouldn't give a number... Then there was the "Jack Killian" caller, waking both me and the missus up in the process who complained when I told them to call back at a sensible hour the next day...:evil::evil:

I think I've left a good enough description of what will be needed for the MOT. I left a set of bullet points on the description describing what needed doing for the MOT.

"Hi m8, cn u tell me wot it needs 4 the MOT"

Then one later:

"I'll let u no."

Bye then.

Here's an options screen to prevent shitty buyers from bidding on your item, it's buried deep within ebay's horrible, unfriendly interface:

Thing is I've only ever bought one car from ebay and I've zero feedback - based on that, I'd not be a good prospective buyer - but saying that, I bought the car in question based on pics and even arranged for transportation to the the house  Fortunately, the car was a good un :D

Gotta say i've sold 2 cars on ebay, both spares or repairs. One was a beige Chevette and the other more recent an XR3i MK4Both with good descriptions / pictures, 99p start no reserve (in my opinion LOL) The Chevette sold to a guy in Glasgow for £250 (I live in West Yorkshire)- he collected 2 days later And the XR3i again sold for over £300 and the guy just picked it up today - was a very easy transaction and we got £100 more for the Xr than we wanted.. I'm sure one day i'll get the tossers though !!!

Had a buyer saying 'he'll definitely have it' turn up expecting the car to be pristine (for 350 quid), when in fact, as the advert says 'needs work'. I used my last drop of petrol to fetch a battery and now I'm utterly skint and I still have this fucking car.Buying shitty, old cars is all well and good, but selling them off again when you realise they really aren't that good is a fucking nightmare.

"Hi m8, cn u tell me wot it needs 4 the MOT"

To which I would add (and display as a 'question from other members') "Could you please put that into English? I know you're a thick cunt who cannot read the advert above, but I simply cannot understand you". Then block the twat from bidding. As for the wankers who never show up, it's easy to get revenge. Only give a mobile (never use the landline unless you block witheld/private numbers) so you get phone numbers.List all the wankers who mess you about. Then put an ad in the Free Ads (a real scum magnet) for a £100 1998 Audi A4 1.9 TDi that 'needs an MOT'. The phone will not stop ringing for a week. Continue as above until you feel satisfied.
