'93 Mondy thread - (very) partial PAS fluid change

The good news is that the MOT pass will take my car to its 30th birthday next March, god willing etc.

So that's like driving a 1963 Cortina 1200 in 1993....

Ok so the tyre that was an MOT fail is completely worn down on the inside (left side in pic)

Is it:

- because ditchfinder

- suspension geometry (over the years had new lower arms, drop links and ARB bushings)

- because the wheels are set toe in to stop the infamous pulling to the left

- another reason

Thoughts?

Run hand along worn section, is it stepped or smooth from leading to trailing edge of tyre.?

As for the 'Mondeos all pull'....pfff.

Smooth I'd say.

Another reason - suspension bush worn such that the wheel can move laterally. I've had it happen and the tyre was legal on outside and had wires through on the inside edge.

Also this is nearside, gearbox end, so when the lower arms were replaced, one bolt had to be put in upside down (not me, mechanic) to avoid dropping sub-frame. Could be it making that side worse or no?

Posted

Yeah, if he/they didn't realign subframe .

Or check camber/caster/toe/tracking/thrust angle.

Posted

As for the pulling to the left...yeah...no.

Without fail anyone that I saw (back then) had had a gearbox out without using the frame or the pegs...

So in summary, my plan of bunging a couple of half decent tyres on it before selling (if I do) is probably masking a bigger issue. Oh joy.

Never seen this doc before. But at £25 won't be buying it, but features loads of early SVE and TCE K-reg cars. Rubs trousers.

Bottom arm bushes, really common on these. They last maybe 2 years tops, hours job a side to swap, waste of time tracking these up until the inner bushes have been checked.

My dad’s old Mondeo could well be in that brochure. Cool! I wonder if it’s either of these two I’ve circled…

Mutha_Claim had one of my Mk2 Mondy taxis and where she chose to work was was riddled with those rubber speed humps designed to let ambulances drive around. I had to replace front suspension bushes three times a year.

When she passed away back in 2016 I was tempted to ask the undertaker to lob the set I had in the shed into her coffin.

It was a crap bit of design, remedied on the Mk3 though they used to just chafe the lower ball joint bushes instead.

Diana was Mondeo (Wo)Man? Didn't not know this.

is it a ghia spec?

yeah, looks like it.

That’s incredible. If only the previous owner knew it’s history then it could well still be around today.

The Mondeo I mean.

Poor old Mondeo, if it was an Escort it would be half a million quid now 😁

I’ve seen footage of her driving a Rover 600 as well. If the RPS were picking her up then it would have usually been a Granada.

1993 Mark 1 Ford Mondeo saloon

Alberto Green with (could be) Pumice Columbo seats, just gorgeous, or at least it was! But! Shouldn't all K-plate Mondies have black-top bumpers? I used to think that fully colour-coded bumpers came in from February 1994, or so say Parkers Used Car Price Guide.

It was pretty much my perfect spec! And early Bases, LX's and GLX's had black top bumpers but Si's and Ghia's always had full body colour bumpers, and this was a Ghia

Perfect for me is a Mk1 24v but with the steels on not the alloys. Manual of course not the dreadful automatic.

Makes you think what with that escort fetching 600k- what price a mondeo driven by Diana? Would it be worth more if she just razzed it round the block like in that video?
