German Classics - spot the shite

Apologies for the rather blatant self-promotion, but from Friday, you will be able to purchase a copy of German Classics magazine, featuring contributions from some of the good folk of Autoshite.

Naturally, there will be Porsches, Mercs and posh V12-powered Beemers, but there will also be Audi 80/90s, Glas coupes, Wartburgs and a Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Driver (because I really didn't want another GTI feature).

The magazine is on sale from all good retailers (ie WH Smith mostly) from Friday 15th Jan, or you can preorder a copy right here. http://shop.kelsey.co.uk/product/BOOKCCWGERCL/classic-car-world-german-classics

This is a one-off for the time being while we assess market response. There is a bonus point if you can find the red and white 2CV that somehow scraped its way into the magazine (actually not mine!), and a smaller point for finding a Volkswagen 411 sneaking into a BMW feature.

Nice to see this come to fruition! I'll be popping along for my copy on Friday...

My favourite German classic is the VW Taro.

Good call on a Golf Driver instead of GTI feature, realistically more people have fond memories of cooking, rather than sporting models.

If there's Glas V8 coupes, Borgward P100s, VW K70s and Wartburgs, count me in!

Some are, some aren't. One of those has a feature dedicated to it. It is me editing it after all.

That's what I'm hoping. No VW Taro I'm afraid, nor 1500 (the Avenger).

My memories of the Golf Driver are running into the back of a new K reg Mondeo estate and its tow hook putting a dent in the edge of its (Mars red) bonnet. Terrible car, sheep in Wolfsburg clothing. For a piece of nostalgia, my first mod was peeling all the Fido Dido stickers off it.....

I spied a live Taro (in council livery) just outside Baden Baden in about 2009.

Was the mondeo an off roader then?

I hope this magazine is not as elusive as the modern classic mag that I've still not been able to find, even the posted one never materialised,

Garybaldy, Mondeo a regular ABS equipped new one. The Royal Mail LDV 200 that shot out a side turning in front of the mega braking Mondeo was my problem.... (That and my lack of teenage driving skills).

I'm not really that much a fan of the German approach to cars so the magazine isn't for me - but German classics are notably popular on Piston heads, so it could be worth somehow engineering a link on the PH site.

Good luck with the magazine.

What I was getting at is a towbar is a lot lower than a golf bonnet.

It would dip quite a bit at the front if braking hard. I ran into the back of a VW Passat in a (borrowed!!) BMW some years back - the tow bar on that hit the BMW's bonnet, even though I was going very slowly. It didn't damage the VW - well, except for the five whiplash claims.

Thanks. Might have to ask Mr 320 Touring to do the honours as funnily enough, I've never felt the need for a PH account.

To be honest, German Classics have never been my favourites, yet there is still something I like about them very much. Mercs especially. Getting to drive a Fintail was a real highlight. There is so much that feels familiar to anyone who has owned a W123. Obviously I quite like East German Classics too.

I may give this a shot, although likely I'll get toe'd in the hole..

And in theory, German Classics is now on sale. A special* bonus prize to anyone who can find the 2CV...

But not in practice, it seems...

I shall order it from Kelsey.

Seen it on the shelves in Asda in Huddersfield on Wednesday.

Not purchased yet as this weeks mag budget is gone but will probably get it next week as relevant to my interests.

Nice pic on the editors blurb page DW, serious bearded journalist face in full effect.

I'd love to see another VW Gol.

Thats a GOL, not GOLF.

Only ever seen one in the flesh and that was over 20 years ago. IIRC, Think Polo, but stretched a bit and then add an air cooled beetle engine up front.

What a strange contraption, it looks like a mash up of Derby, Golf and Scirocco and is named like a Golf with a letter missing. Wonder what the pineapple brigade would make of it.
