2004 Reno Scenic II - Now gone. But not forgotten.

Hasn't the poor guy had enough bad luck already and to then have a 11 year old Auto Renault!

It'd need its wheel bearing sorted for sure if he did have it. Local garage said they'd do it for £30 labour for me if I wanted - just require obtaining parts. In truth it'd probably be alright for him, ...but I don't want to be held responsible if something broke being a 11 year old French machine and all that! Cause all the important bits are working, ...right now...

But then I guess any sub 500 quid automatic car will have question marks all over it?

If he has any warning lights come up though and has an android phone, I know of an app that works alright with it to read+clear the codes.

Going by the response to the roffle thread we are only £30 off your asking price anyways, and the amount of extra people who have chipped in should cover a wheel bearing?

You run it last your insurance bub?

Hmmm, let me ask Ma_Sterling, her knee has given way and really needs an auto as it's a bit painful for her driving a manual. I shall ask her tomorrow.

Sorry to be so awkward but I don't think I could have this. Insurance seems high and I'm honestly frightened of modern renaults!

I'm currently on a car buying ban from the other half until I sell this. Very annoyingly this has meant I've missed out on 2 bargains I really liked the look of and also I'm supposed to be going up to Cannock tomorrow. :(

So with this in mind, I'm keen for it to go and its now up for £400 or your bestest best offer. :)

If anyone wanted to change the wheel bearing before setting off on a journey, then I live in a very quiet cul-de-sac that is flat and wouldn't be a problem doing it here. Only tools really needed are a wrench, torque wrench for the hub nut (220Nm is spec - my torque wrench doesn't go that high or could also just do it up sufficiently tight?), rear brake rewind tool, and Google suggests the hub nut is 30mm - so a socket that big (I don't think I have one that big).

One thing I have forgot, is in true AS style...

Good bits:

  • Top spec, so all the toys - e.g. auto wipers, auto lights, auto dimming rearview mirror, cd changer, keyless start, etc.
  • The all important Auto box changes through as it should. Engine runs fine too.
  • Drives and handles well.
  • Comfy seats and high up, if you like that sort of thing.
  • 5 star ncap and isofix child seat anchors.
  • No warning lights.
  • 2x working keycards - one is brand new within the last 2 years or so.
  • Dashboard repaired recently by the previous owner - which works fine. (they all do that sir)
  • Electronic Handbrake was replaced 5 years ago with a brand new unit - which is still working fine. (they all do that sir)
  • Folder full of history back to around 2008 or so, with pretty much every and anything bought for it in there.
  • MOT until 26th June 2016.
  • 4x good tyres (3x kuhmo, 1x pirelli)
  • At this price and as its all pretty much working, you could pretty much break it for parts by pulling the easy and small bits. Still quite a few Scenics about, so parts are plenty in demand.
Priced conservatively - Electronic Handbrake £80, 3x Working door modules £15 each, cd changer + radio £20 + £10, dashboard £30, ecu+body computer+steering lock+2 key combo £60 (would sell easily as keyless ecu sets are rare on eBay), movable centre arm rest console thing £50, under bonnet fuse box computer £15, alloys+tyres £60, etc. That all brings it to pretty much £350 without removing of any the big stuff.

Bad bits: (11 yr old Renault, its going to have something...)

  • Rear wheel bearing - as above. Just grumbles, no noticeable movement when wheel is wiggled.
  • Dent in sill - my MOT man said its not a failure - but would require a bit of paint on the exposed metal to stop it corroding and becoming a fail in the future. I think its possibly from someone putting the jack in the wrong place in its past.
  • Steering rack makes clicks when manoeuvring at slow speeds. Had a look around when it was up on the ramp in the garage, nothing seems loose or clonking and appears more to be coming from the rack. Looking through the notes in the history folder, it looks like its been doing it a while - at least ~20k miles or so. I've heard a few other Scenics and Meganes around since and they did the same, so not really concerned its something sinister. Oh its had a new rack a couple of years ago too.
  • Front Passenger window has decided not to open. Definitely the module, as I tried the back module on it and it worked (they run in reverse though, so can't be used as a fix). Replacement modules can be had cheap nowadays and dead easy to fit.
  • Few dings and marks on the body - pretty much what you would expect on a 11yr old child carrying vehicle.

Now to be really picking...

  • Keyless lock button on the handle is temperamental on the drivers side - the keycard buttons work perfectly though, so can still do it the old fashioned way. £15 for a new part from Renault or do it the AS way and swap it around for one of the rear passenger side button...
  • Outside temperature sensor doesn't work. You probably wouldn't notice it if I didn't say, as the dash doesn't show it! £10 for a new part off eBay and it lives in the drivers side mirror.
  • Electronic Oil Level sensor doesn't work - again you probably wouldn't know if I didn't say, so you'll have to check the oil the old fashioned way. Doesn't appear to consume any oil either incidentally.
  • Electric folding mirror only folds on the Passenger side - drivers side doesn't do anything. So if you need to fold the mirrors in, you have to do it manually on the drivers side.

Will be taxed to the end of this month, and then we're swapping the tax+insurance back round to the DisAstra if the Scenic doesn't sell before then.

Oh and I'm in Bristol.

Forgot to put this on here, but it's currently on eBay for sale - less than 45 minutes left if anyone is interested still....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141916994914

Looks like it should be selling though, if the buyer actually turns up. However after having, so far, 8 no-shows from Gumtree individuals I'm not holding out too much hope.

Posted

That's a bargain, the buyer will be getting a good motor for that really. Hope it's a smooth transaction!

Posted

Wahoo! Sold for £470 in the end! Mega happy with that.  :-D

Especially considering the first buyer that messed me around was offering £350. I had a trader wanting to come from London who I accepted £300 for yesterday - was supposed to get in contact today to come but never did.

But then its eBay, so the buyer may never actually turn up. :?

Those Megane things are a sod for flagging cam sensor faults when it's the crank sensor that's gone down, or vice versa.

Arggggghhhh. God damn it.

Tried a contacting the winning bidder several times - including on his phone (straight to voice mail). Second chance to the second bidder, again no response. Second chance to the third bidder, (who messaged me a couple of times, really interested) by this point had bought another car.

Soooooooooo, its back up on MesserTree and exasperatingBay.

Unless someone on here wants to make a silly offer that I'll probably take.

Soon-to-be-wife is getting quite pee'd off with it in the way on the drive.  :?

Posted

Sadly my offer would be too silly else I'd have it as an interim van whilst my Kangoo is off the road feeling sorry for itself

Is the wheel bearing REALLY bad or "just starting to go"?

Posted

Do you have the address from eBay for the winning bidder?

Park it outside his house. Forget to leave the key. Optionally set light to it.

If you were down the road I'd have this in a heartbeat. Unfortunately getting it here doubles that price.

eBay was great for me up until about a year back. Ever since then it's been one Romanian-based arse hole after the next uncontactable titwank

Sold again on eBay! £260, so less this time.

I wouldn't mind .... except Tracy from Dudley phone number doesn't work and hasn't responded to several eBay messages yet ...

:angry008:

The most annoying thing I find is that you pay for listing (£10), you pay a fee based on the winning amount (£20 on this). If you get a non-paying bidder, and claim on eBay, you get the final fee back but have to pay again to relist. So every time you get a time waster, it's also wasting the sellers money too. :(

I have considered stripping the parts down as the original plan and make a electronic bench version of a Scenic. However it just doesn't feel right to effectively scrap a perfectly working car with MOT, that just needs a minor repair.

But there is another potential fate for it...

Posted

I have no use for it what so ever, however feel like I should buy it!

We have a response from the buyer!

New message from: trbdrake (4)

dont want car too many miles didnt exactly say what miles it had done sorry

Why are you complaining that its done too many miles but it wasn't clear how many miles its done ... DOES NOT COMPUTE.

I did a very nice photo of the dash showing the mileage too.

Thanks for wasting £30 in fees. FFS

Finally gone! But not forgotten....

Incidentally, I noticed my neighbour there cleaning his v-reg fiesta around the windscreen scuttle literally with a toothbrush. Potential top future autoshite chod there!

Posted

Can't you claim the fees back for that, since you DID say how many miles it had done by taking a picture.

Posted

I should be able to get the final fee back like I did last time (£20), but they didn't refund the listing fee and they charged to relist it too. So still out of pocket by £20 from 2 x listing fees. Also I can't claim until 2 days after the auction ended.

I suspect complaining the faceless entity that is eBay about those listing fees would be futile.

Lesson learnt, eBay classified ads only from now on for me.

I'm actually in Dudley, so if you need me to pop round and ask for your £20 back :-D
