No ways!  Looks like it is going backwards all the time.

I have just done a vehicle check that came up OK, and have put in a half cut on Xmas cheap champagne* bid on that Volvoheap.  If I win it, and it doesn't explode, I  can always give it to my ex wife after I get back from the Alps.  She lives in a floody and muddy area and currently has a massively POS 2011 1.6 non turbo diesel POS Golf POS that has broken down more often than all of my shit cars put together during the last year.  It is, by the way, a POS.    She paid 11K for it.

PS:  POS.

  * Majestic, 13 quid, nay bad.

So the Volvo is locked . So need to gain access then cut key? So the locksmiths " from " price may increase a smidge*. Still would though. Good luck and all that.

I'd be very extra careful buying a Discovery for a long, trouble-free journey. If it were me I'd get a 300Tdi that's been dearly loved and drive it around for a month to tease out the biggest immediate issues.

How many people do you need to take? If it's only five then maybe a Honda CRV and a set of winter tyres would work. I was considering one recently and they're supposed to be very reliable and a reasonable drive from 2002 on (front indicators above the headlights)

I don't think that'll be a non-turbo, even though it probably feels like it. I think the last non-turbo diesel in a passenger car was the late 2000s VAG 2.0 SDi.

Buy that Sharan for sale on here and stick winter tyres on it.

Probably too modern and too Audi, but my little brother has just been discussing selling his Audi AllRoad, it's a 2005 2.7 V6 twin turbo petrol. With a 6 speed manual box . One owner up until July this year and only about 100k up.

I think he wNts about £4k for it and only selling because his missus has just decided she's not going back to work after sprog production , meaning a 20 mpg around town car is not a good idea and he doesn't want to sell his e34 M5.

As a Trans Alpine Express, I doubt it could be bettered .

Only picture I can find is from the summer parked behind Mrs N's Gaylander in my dad's garden in France.

The Audi managed nearly 30 mpg on this trip- identical to the 4 pot dizzler Land Rover. Except the Aldi was cruising at 120 rather than 90.

If you wanna borrow my Umm Gerard, just ask mate, the back might be tad draughty/insecure for passengers/luggage, but I doubt you'll hear much whining over the mighty Indenor ... It was last seen in Norfolk, bring wellies

Seriously though, Volvo XC70 gets my vote if you can't find an 850R ;)

The only things that have gone wrong with my ex-Andy18s Disco 1 are that the aftermarket LPG pump has packed in and the gaffer tape has peeled off the for'ard sunroof, leading to a mild case of the falling damps. Oh, and some buttons fell off the stereo.

It's such a good truckster that I'm going to treat it to some tyres with actual tread on them soon.

I drove my Mk1 Golf ragtop to the Pyrenees for Christmas about 10 years ago, before Mrs Skizzer was invented. You can get any amount of skis and snowboards in it with the roof down. It worked so well I took it to Les Deux Alpes the following Christmas. Deffo the discerning* skier's transport of choice. Lacks third row of seats though.

Citroen CX Familiale?

If you intend to have someone in the back for a long distance, then as much as I love them, forget Disco 1s, the side facing jump seats are not really fit for human habitation, pretty much the same goes for the rear facing perches in Volvos,Mercs,Montegos,Audis etc. under 10's for short journies only really.

The good news is that Disco 2s have proper forward facing seats and cruise at 70/80 much more happily than their predecessors .

Other proper 7 seat 4x4 include XC90s , the 2.9 petrol ones are good value . Downside is the Kath Kidson,Waitrose, Daily Mail image.

The Autoshite choice has got to be Nissan Terrano or Ford Maverick, did they make a petrol one?

Something really annoys me about the description of the Volvo.

Have seen other cars that lot have listed and it's the same massive wall of text every time.

I know ebay is full of timewasting idiots who expect the moon on a stick for £2.11, but writing 10,000 words that basically say "this car may be shitter than it looks" seems like a waste of time.

Anyway, as you were.

The Volvo dudes are, I infer,  trying to do knock down bargs and point out to the internet lawyer twats that an old car may be a bit crap. Since the new wanky Consumer statute came in earlier this year, the internet gobshite lawyers think that they can buy a car and claim a bazillion quid compo if a cupholder is a bit wobbly.  The sellers may also be a bit geezer, but, if they are, then there are remedies against commercial geezerness.

What is this Merc whereof dome speaketh?

Breadman and the Countess in a Zafira?  Yep, I'd definitely buy a ticket to come and see that.

I believe a Peugeot 505 Dangel ticks all the boxes, and then some:

Added bonus of being able to say "I'm just looking for somewhere to park my Dangel" without getting slapped.

Here's one that needs a little* work: http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/894631664.htm

I never knew the Dangel existed. It is spectacular and is now very firmly high up on my "want list"

I am a knob.   I was prepared to bid 2000 for the Volvo, but played like a chiselling shyster and bid lower, intending to hover and bid at the end.  Then I got distracted by daughter blah, and thus I lost the heap by 20 quid and someone, maybe a trader, may be getting a good deal for 1330 plus burglary costs.    Hey ho, maybe my bad bidding technique was a sign that I wasn't sure.

Dangel, yes please, but presumably only 4 in whole world or summat.

PS: saw Star Wars as compensation.   It is super awesome.  I got all blub because I went to the first one as a teenager in 1977, and was mucho emoto going with my pre teen daughter to see the new one.  Blub.

Don't LWB Shoguns have seven seats? If so, one would fit the bill, 3.5 petrol to pullyou effortlessly over an Alp  or 2.8 diesel will do the same thing but more slowly and economically. And of course, being Japanese it will never let you down :)

And as a clincher, if you ever need to tow a dead Routemaster, a Shogun will do the job (admittedly slowly, on the level and indoors ;))

I know it's probably not your thing, but for hauling peeps and luggage to mountains you could do a lot worse than a Land Cruiser ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-R-TOYOTA-LANDCRUISER-COLORADO-3-4-AUTO-7-SEATER-BLUE-5DR-4X4-/221966124039?hash=item33ae364407:g:-WsAAOSwwE5WbwiY... This one even has a roof rack for strapping the servants to so you can keep the valuable luggage warm and dry.

or go the whole hog and get a Suburban ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-BIG-GMC-suburban-7-4-Big-Block-V8-4x4-heavy-duty-2500-monster-/121840259322?hash=item1c5e3ed0fa:g:VZcAAOSwnH1WbryK

Brother is seling is 2004-ish 7 seater  Shogun as he is using a different car to commute in now - I can ask him how much if it's of interest?

Ssangyong Rexton..?

Available in 5 or 7 seat. Looks are Marmite but drive sublime (compared to previous 300TDi Disco ) and will tow 3.5T if req.

Early 04/05 2.9 (merc 5cyl veg friendly) for £2k ish (290 model) best with the magic wand, i think the gears are in here somewhere manual version.

2.5K would get a 2.7 CDi (270 model) mostly with Auto box.

Beware post March '07 as the TAX is OMG £500.!

I haz 2004 290SE as a towcar.

With rear wheel drive just slide the back end out on those tight bends, your passengers will love it, just don't stack the gold in the boot.

About as popular as herpes but we have done 60K in ours without any issues  - the bench rear seat can be sold (they used to go for strong money) and a single or pair of sep seats installed without issue in the boot area.

Unless the timing belt has been done its on borrowed time and due to the issues with injectors rusting into the head on these if it goes it will write the head off.

Uber cheap 2.0HDi diesels are out there.

Phase 1 for £1500

They are mega comfy and surprisingly brisk.
