I think it depends entirely on the XM to be fair. I'm frantically clutching at timber objects here, but in the past 13 months and 12,000 miles, there has not been one moment where I've had to abandon a journey or even think about jumping in one of my other cars. I get in, it starts, I drive to wherever I need to (usually a long way away). Sure, there have been niggly faults, but that's true of every single car (especially those over 100,000 miles) that I've ever owned.

I've had two recovery truck trips in ten years and around 100,000 miles of XM ownership, both due to burst suspension pipes. I've had two brake pipes go too over the years but was able to get the car home / to the garage without any problems so it's been far more exquisite joy rather than misery even if my 2.1TD failed its MOT today.

Now that the youngest XM is fifteen and certain spares are drying up I expect that the next few years are going to tilt towards misery, though. It'll be a sad day when I can no longer sensibly have one as my daily driver.

Good luck with whichever one you end up with, Frogchod.

Yup. I think we're well onto the downward slope now, though perhaps the parts situation is better in France? We can live in hope.

LP - don't forget that slurping the veg is very much frowned upon in France.

Yes, you mustn't fill up in public.

The 2.5 td isn't related to the van engine, apparently. They don't share any common components despite being very similar on paper. The XM engine has two balance shafts too.

Always wondered why Citroen bothered with two engines tbh.

Really? They really did go to a lot of trouble to make a bespoke powerplant then.

The need for it was pretty clear. 110bhp isn't very much to shift quite so much car - I certainly feel it on mine when I get out accelerated by bloody Vauxhall Astras. Normally, I don't mind the lack of oomph to be fair, but remember that by the mid-1990s, BMW were starting to up the power for executive dizzlers. I guess PSA felt it couldn't get many more reliable horses from the 2.1.

I think there's some confusion because the vans use an array of engines from Fiat and IVECO, I'm sure the PSA 2.5 diesel was used in the vans along with the others.

I'm resuming search after that there Christmas.

But did the sensible thing and a got an insurance quote for a V6.

Only 15 euro a year more than the departed Visa ?

Insurance Price Structure Shokker....

The XM lump was unique to the XM (and maybe the 605)

I've given up on the V6 idea, three out of three prospective V6's seem to be owned by complete twunts, one even pulled the add and relisted it for a grand more. (Although I see it's back on at the original price this morning) Is it coz I is English ?

So this morning I have agreed to buy a 2.5TD XM. Test drive did not disappoint, loads of low down power, nice light clutch, much waftyness and no green puddles on giffers driveway.

No epic collection thread as It's only 85km away.

Collection is on Tuesday.

Here's a crappy teaser photo:

A few niggles to sort out, dot matrix has gone Chinese, heater display is awol, clock is 88888 and I cant get in the boot.

Put my tools in there at sellers house ok,now wont open ?

Throttle action seems a bit heavy, especially second half of pedal travel. Are they all like that?

Some pics:

Boot should just need the handle returning to the fully-released position. They stick.

Heater display (if air con) is the fuse in engine bay behind left side headlight. They often get melted!

Posted

Thanks to RichardK , boot is open.

Checked the fuse box and yes, there was a melted 30A fuse. Still in working order though. Changed it any way.

Still the same. The display is there, if you squint you can see the set temperature go up and down in response to the temperature control.

Air bag light is on now  :(

Nicely chosen Sir. We do like an XM.

I think "Philibusmo" detailed his DIY repair of the dot-matrix screen somewhere on here, see if you can dig it out.

If that fails and the remote button works on the key fob try standing by the boot and opening and closing the car with the button a few times. You may eventually hear a click from the boot that'll tell you that it's finally opened. Two of my XMs have had this problem, but I've never worked out how to fix it.

Looking good, any more news? Anticipating tales of 190km/h trips on used veg, with a hint of cooked snail to the exhaust. Remember to use the old LHM!

Looks nice. The clock showing 888888 most likely just means it needs the the time setting ...

Boot might just be sticky. I sometimes have to lean on mine as I press the button and then it'll open. Looks nice enough!

Well bought!! Always fancied an XM! Mrs B not a fan 😞

Yes, the XM is still working !

Things to do list is getting longer though. Accumulator sphere is clicking far to often, so I ordered one, then I opened the bonnet...... and closed it again.

Looks a PITA job. I'll have a go when it's not snowing or raining.

Rear sinks over night, I think that's another sphere.

And entering the security code every start is bugging me. C 1 C is supposed to put into auto mode but it doesn't. Is there a way around this ?

Done about 400km now and still loving the waftyness and the on boost whoosh.

Didn't really need an auto, stick it in 4th and leave it, that and there's fark all traffic round here :)

No need for veg either, first fill up was at 94cents a litre.

IIRC, you can disable the immobiliser. Mine thankfully doesn't have such nonsense. I seem to recall something about unplugging it while the engine is running and then you're ok.

Wouldn't worry about the anti-sink sphere. It's better when they sink. Makes the start of every journey more exciting. Accumulator spheres are a bit tricky to access even on the 2.1.

According to the manual for mine you have to enter C1C within ten seconds of entering your usual unlock code. You should then hear four beeps and the green light should flash four times.
