A 320 touring perhaps? High mileage ones come up around that money but you may have to put up with slightly frilly arches.

The 1.8t Octy on here.

I've just done 400 miles up and down the country and got 38mpg with a heavy right foot. Staying at 70 nets an indicated 43mpg average.

Plus you already have loads of spares!

Already said on that thread that mot is too short, otherwise I would! potential for 200+bhp with a few tweaks

Get a 75/ZT has to be the 2.5 V6 manual though!

Avoid tourers as the rear screen and glass parts are no longer available .. Easy in your price bracket I would think, I get 25mpg and very nearly 43mpg @ steady 60mph :D 60mph happens under 9 seconds out the box too which is nice

Not a hope miladdo.. any car that needs a wheel off to change a bulb can gtf:)

if I had to get a Rover it'd either be a p5b, p6 v8 or an r8.. never liked the 75/zt when we had them at hire car place

From one VAG TDi to another - A4 2.5 V6 TDI quattros aren't too hard to find...

Same issue re handling, v6 fairly fragile, not vegitarian and unable to easily tune..

but could be a comfortable mile muncher!

There are a couple of 'MTDI' 2.5 V6s known of, with the crap VP44 swapped for a mechanical pump.

Something veggable and more interesting to drive then?

interesting, but doesnt solve the fact that the base car is about as exciting as a wet long weekend in Skegness...

I had an A4 (2001 B5 model) for 6 years. I wouldn't say the handling was fun but it was OK and very secure. Very good grip on corners and went where you pointed it. Mine was the 115bhp 1.9 engine. Most dependable, reliable car I've owned and overall the cheapest as nothing really went wrong in 94k miles. Finding a decent one is more difficult now though. They also came with a 2.8 or 1.8T petrol engine so one of them might be up your street. When you've finished with it there will be lots of polish people queuing at your door. That was my experience anyway.

I think of going a4 it'd need to be either 1.8t or 1.9tdi.

not to fussed re resale but its a fair point you make re ability to get shot of it

Can I suggest buying a horrid e46 320d for about 300 quid?

Have always wondered if they're as terrible as they're made out to be.

40ish mpg, should be an alright steer, no veg but can be remapped?
