I'd love to know what that "EXTRA" button on the dash does.

I know I know an E90 BMW on Autoshite.
But this isn't a normal e90. This is one of the 500 (in the UK) 320si's that BMW fitted with a hand built and pretty much completely different high compression 4 cylinder engine, built in part at the F1 BMW factory for touring car homologation. Not only that they moved the location of the engine further back in the car and fitted it with a barrytastic but genuine OMGOEM carbon fibre rocker cover,
The interesting bit is although the engine was hand built at BMW F1 they didn't say hand build by who.  Maybe the guy who cleans the septic tan?  The kid on work experience in the accounts section? The engines on the whole seem to be total dog shit.
They fitted aluminium liners instead of the normal steel ones, which crack causing massive engine failures. Half of them are on their 2-3rd engine. Apparently when they do work the engine modifications they made are completely unsuitable for a heavy saloon car so they feel slow and need the rev'd to get anywhere. This one is for sale near me as finance repo with no history and the fateful words "It was a non runner but after a battery charge it drove 50 miles with no problems or issues"
If it did go wrong god only know how you'd get parts for it.

I bet this is fun to work on. No chance if you've got sausage fingers

Once you remove all the removable crap that BMW put on top of the engine, they're not as bad as you think

That huge plastic scuttle makes it look like it's practically mid engined!

I like older BMs, and will often try to defend them but this looks shit. It's never going to be like an original M3, it's almost impossible to market a car like that these days, encumbered as they are by air bags, ABS, power steering, air con, electric windows all round etc, etc.

And the engine, fucking woeful, didn't they learn about aluminium liners ages ago, what with the nicasil issues. The power output is hopeless, BMW marketing should be embarrassed to advertise that with less than 100 bhp per litre.

I'd be genuine happy for somebody to tell me that it drives like a modern day e30 M3 and dances across the road at the mildest twitch of the wheel with a compliancy that defies belief...

But with all that lard and 18" wheels, I doubt it.
