What goes wrong with the 1.9 DCi?

Careful, the internet only has so much capacity you know.

Well done, fingers crossed for the pressing of the start button!

What goes wrong with the 1.9 DCi? I worked at a place that ran Kangoo 1.5 DCis, some of them were on 300k+ with original components apart from the odd injector and service parts, and they went as well as younger examples. Less complicated Renaults seem much more reliable.

Good work on the Laguna scary, shite dedication.

The 1.9dci isn't that bad if it gets looked after. The trouble is extended service schedules and owners with no idea. The main reason for a dead dci is turbo related. Most of the ones I have had dealings with have eaten turbo's usually due to blocked oilways after not being serviced. They also have trouble with high pressure pumps like most other common rail cars. The 6 speed box is also weak and then you get all the normal Laguna electrics. They can do high miles but they must be looked after right from new with the correct oil every 6k rather than the 18k Renault hoped they would make. The 1.5dci was slightly better on the engine but the pump was far worse and causes the injectors to fail as well so is a very expensive fix when it goes tits up. Once they start playing up then they will just keep being a money pit of over 20 of the buggers I had over a 4 year period a couple of years ago not one of them comes up as still taxed and on the road.

I had a little time this afternoon, so I got some oil and antifreeze together and got on with it.

Some video is uploading... but first I thought you would like to see the special cam setting tool.

Demonstrated on the old engine, which is why the cam cover is loose - I needed the two bungs for the other one because you either destroy them on the way out or you need a gasket. Or a dead engine to rob bits from.

Back soon!

Anyway. when I connected the battery, the radiatior fan started to run, and wouldn't stop even with the ignition off and the doors locked. This was quickly* tracked down to the temp sensor on the side of the thermostat housing - it wasn't plugged in.

First go....

Oh. What the? Grumble mumble... Oh, hang on, it's in gear and the clutch is up. TRY AGAIN

Noooooooo! Red light of doom and nothing else. Consider using fire - it's very cold (I'm not smoking - that's just my breath). Decide instead to check battery voltage with multimeter - 8.4v and falling. Change battery.

Watch the volume on this one! It runs! I didn't leave it running because it's backed into the garage and I like being alive. Tomorrow I will clear a path and take it for a drive but tonight it's cold and wet and I CBA.

Well, £150 later and I'm basically back where I started - an unknown engine that's just had fresh oil flung in it. I also got a text from my sister who wants me to go look at another house on saturday....... WCPGW???

Congrats!!!!! I think I'm gonna put mine on the road at the beginning of February. Race you!!!! (to EMR)

Phone mic is making it sound bad, also because it's stone cold it is ticking over at 1100rpm. It isn't making any unexpected noises anyway.

Well done mate, but got to ask why?

Doesn't detract from the effort, persistence and downright intransigence.

Top marks!

Amazing work, you will get your reward when you reach heaven.  Let's hope so anyway because you're being absolutely arse-raped here on earth.

Arse raped? I hope not! Lets not forget that my total spend is still less than 1 month's payment on a brand new Nissan Juke.

As to why, I keep asking myself that. It's even in the thread title ffs. I dunno. It's something to do.

Hearty congratulations on being back where you started! Hehe.... Top marks for sticking with it. I'd have probably hit it a few times with an axe and called the scrappy.

You're right, SOC, as well as being cheaper than a new Nissan it's probably also cheaper than a medium heroine habit, although at least with the drug you can go to rehab.  More power to you.

Who needs reasons when you've got a Renault Laguna II?

The satisfaction when you drive it working for the first time will make it all worth while

For 40 minutes. After that, who knows...

I'm trying to explain to my six year old son that my favourite superhero is a man who just resurrected a Renner Laguna.

Well done! Here's hoping it gives you many trouble free miles and years of joy (fingers crossed).

Great read, are you doing a post mortem on the old lump now? :)

Posted

Yeah, I'm going to pull the sump off just to confirm my suspicions. Priorities though, I need the car working first!

Awesome! Totally glad you persevered and got the old girl running again. Hopefully she'll reward you with plenty of comfortable wafting.

If not .... Raffle!

Autoshite GOLD thread, would recommend A++++.

I think we're all rooting for the Laguna. For some reason.

Such motoring masochism. Top work there SOC. I've just been watching vids on youtube of the resto of a mk3 Tina that really was pretty far gone. That bloke had serious determination, and clearly deep pockets

Watch this space - I've got a near terminal mk3 two door that I really should be getting on with....

Flippin heck, you've got it bad SambaS!!! 'Shiting' time and skills are valuable resources - don't waste them when there are endless more deserving causes out there!!!! (Says the man pissing about with a Laguna while his unfinished Maserati enters its 3rd year of sitting gathering dust)

Truer words, etc....

We've seen what happens when you get hold of terminally rotten cars. And it is very good.

Thread please.

Cool, that bloke is part way through his second, and has a totally rotten maize 2 door badermatic to start on by the looks. Hopefully you can find someone brave enough to co pilot on the Slaguna's maiden voyage with it's 'new' heart, so it can be filmed for us all to gasp at
