Primary school, late 90s...

 

One shite hero on the teaching staff had an orange Yugo saloon. Quick googling suggests it was a '513' or similar. Quite posh for a Yugo as I remember it had alloy wheels. IIRC, it was later replaced by one of the later 45/55-style hatchback Yugos. By the time I had finished there she had gone all sensible and boring with a R8-shape Rover 216.

 

Another teacher had a scruffy Morris Traveller and a less-regularly seen late-model 2CV.

 

Special needs teacher had a run of Daewoos back when they first came out in the UK.

 

Rest was all boring stuff, Corsas, 306s, Fiestas etc. Can't remember anything any of the teachers at the 'big school' had so they must have had even more boring cars.

Mrs Adams, Maths, scary as hell, but heart of gold, and an awesome blue Triumph Spitfire which she had had from new.

 

Mrs Phalp, English, VW Golf Gti mk1, it was an absolute minter! She also drove her husbands Vanden Plas Maestro sometimes (traded then both in for an a-class)

 

Mr H (name protected because he went to prison later on for being inappropriate with a Y10 girl), Physics, thoroughly nice guy and excellent teacher (notwithstanding the previous facts) drove a VW Golf VR6, and had aCorrado previous to that.

Mr Kasold (big bearded American guy who taught English - yes really): doom blue Mk3 Fiesta

Mr Hill (physics): JRG Pug 306 Sedan. I liked his classes - he was the exam officer and a heavy smoker so he taught exactly what was needed to pass the exam and nothing else and then went out for a long fag break.

Mr Ware (physics/geology): never had a car and rode a big BMW motorbike. Lived alone and there were persistent rumours he was gay that I never really understood - he left to become housemaster at a boys' boarding school so seems unlikely to me.

 

Something else interesting about Mr Ware - we went on a geology field trip to his parents' farmhouse in the wilds of Wales and his dad was restoring a big old Bedford 4x4 lorry, which was awesome.

Those that most stand out are the chemistry teacher's very early aero-shape Carlton estate. An L in that delicious povo solid blue colour that Vauxhall did so well. Can't find any pics. 

 

The other was the Volvo 343 owned by the librarian. I thought it was ace. It looked like this.

 

Oh and the rural sciences teacher (Mrs Hussey - I also had a Mr Tinker and a Mr Nutter at my school) drove a red and white 2CV Dolly. Pretty sure that had no affect on me though...

I was at secondary school in the 60's so, looking back on it, EVERYTHING the teachers drove then would be interesting now. However even then there were some stand-out examples which I really loved at the time (or at least found interesting). Here's some.......

• Ford Anglia estate - tuned and fitted with wide steel wheels in blue with white roof (Geography teacher)
• Ford Zodiac Mk3 V6 3litre in silver (Physics teacher)

• Morris MO traveller (looked like a scaled-up Morris Minor traveller) in grey with varnished timber (Technical teacher)

I now realise that this list could go on and on and on. However, I will finish with the absolute stand-out car in the staff car park. The (female) Geography teacher who had the Anglia estate mentioned above traded it in against a newish (1966) Mk1 Lotus Cortina ...... the wow factor even then.

Primary School first. Mr Mason the hairy PE teacher had an early yellow Nova SR with a droopy melted plastic grille.

 

Mr Walters the Headteacher had an early Granada, blue with wood on the dashboard and the smooth back lights, and a brown Lancia Thema which I think came second.

 

A teacher I want to call Mr Scott had a kermit green Saab 95. The name might be wrong, the car/colour/exhaust smell is lodged in my memory.

 

Mrs Sandsome, the bitch that once made me stand in the corner, had an early Mk1 Astra with roundy roundy lights and the stupid little half tailgate. It was badged Opel though, I seem to remember. Brick red.

 

As a bonus, our local council had a fleet of these which would be parked in the middle of the playground whilst workmen hit things with hammers

 

And every day, the school dinners would turn up in one of these as they were cooked at a local comprehensive and bought in for maximum congealiness

Two stick out: Miss Lewis the English teacher with a Triumph Herald convertible, and Mr Hurrell the physics teacher* who drove around in a Vauxhall van that once had been part of the BT fleet.  This was in the 1980s.

Teacher was called Tony Horn(e), and he taught me

 

Craft Design and Technology, which got me an O level grade B in Metalwork, an O lever Grade A in Geometric and Engineering Drawing and an A level Grade D in Design.

 

He bought a BRAND NEW Ital, and used a years supply of green hammerite, to paint the whole underside of it. He had it jacked up every lunchtime in the workshop with no axle stands, for weeks, to do this painting whilst our small A level Class were allowed to create engineering horrors in order to attempt to pass said A level. My one wheeled trailer, was an exceptional example of shiteness in the extreme.

 

His Ital was the reason I became a chartered engineer, just so that 20 years later I could go on the school tour, to help my kids choose their secondary school, and explain that I only went into engineering to prevent shite like that appearing in future. I really wanted to be an accountant.

It is the way of life.

 

Quite frankly I still want to set fire to almost all the teachers I was subjected to. Mainly the scarcastic, arrogant, quite frankly rude, and mean way they treated other humans.

 

I can only hope the training is better these days, but having experienced attending parent's evenings for my own kids, I'm still not convinced that in a school with 50 teachers, that any more than 3 or 4 will have some sort of real vision and drive, and actually care about the outcomes for every child.

Mr Cawthorne had a red SD1. Pretty sure it was a Vitesse or summat, with the chinny chin chin spoiler

 

Fraggle the Science Teacher (Or Mr Garton to his family) had a blue and silver Capri 2.8i

 

Mrs Rosser had a Rover 800 Fastback with a well-posh plate, 72R or something.

 

Mr Kennedy was the cool teacher, he had a purple Mini Clubman with sticky-outy wheels and tinted windows. This is quite accurate, imagine more black paint on the windows and the bodykit was a bit more hanging off.

 

Mr Watson was the supply teacher who looked and smelled like he lived in his orange Astra Estate

 

One of the dinner ladies had a white Metro with a "METRO" Flashback sticker thing in the back window, and a teacher I forget had a purple Rover Metro that was proper new, so we lifted it by the wheelarches and turned it so he couldn't get out of the space.

 

There were about 50 teachers at my school which basically means that my memory is clearly shot.

In the mid 70's at secondary school.

Mr Lazard (Art) J plate Volvo 144 in dark blue & always filthy (we used to make up rude stories about his wife's Vulvo, but he used it most.) Mr Mann (Art) Rover 60 in brown over beige. Mr Coales (English) Cortina 1600E in that sort of metalic pink colour, later replaced by another one in Aubergine. He also raced a Formula Ford (battling for second to last place). PE teacher (can't remember his name) had a Mk1 Mini brush painted black with dents all over it after he rolled it with the rest of the PE Dept in it on a wild night out!

Mr Wilkinson (Deputy Head & Physics) Had a lovely blue Bristol (may have been a 407) with a pre 63 plate so I don't know the year. He once had a puncture & we were fascinated by the spare wheel in the front wing. We also made lots of Bristols jokes.

 

My wife just found some photos in the loft & among them 2 of the above Mr Coales' later race car, a Renault 5 TS one make series.This was a bit later after I'd left school. I remember him telling me he had a friend with a new R5 Gordini and he described the handling as really great, almost as good as a Mini. I had a Mini at the time and thought it was very funny!

Headteacher at my comp till 1983, one Dr White (unfortunate, considering the leading brand of sanitary towel at the time was ... hence his nickname was 'Tampon') - a yellow hardtop TR7, which earned him no extra respect at all.

My inspirational chemistry teacher, Bill Crewe - old, dark blue 3 litre Capri, which he greatly mourned the passing of once he took up with the biology teacher, one Ms Beastie, and they started sharing something 'sensible'. He did admit that the Capri had not driven straight since he kerbed it hard while pissed...

A thoroughly nice chap and woodwork teacher called Trevor Champion - utterly shite GT6 in probably BRG, for comedy moments like - he closed the drivers door, and the boot flew open.

And lastly, the new and decidedly hip primary school teacher whose name escapes me (I wasn't in his class, and this was 1973) - a rag top Bond of some type, already completely minging, that was. The brownest car I've ever seen.
