Car tax question

Sorry if this has been covered before but with the new tax system do you have to tax a car you have just bought online before you can drive it home?

Do you just wing and hope for the best or is there a 'get you home' clause?

Posted

You are supposed to but there are ways to get it home

Is it still taxed? If so then as long as the seller hasn't gone online and sorn'd it straight away, the car will show as being taxed until the dvla get the paperwork

If it's untaxed/sorn'd then you will.need to tax it yourself

Your ment to tax as soon as you buy but so far no one has been done yet.

If the owner does the v5 on the computer then it will show up as not taxed straight away.

Yes, you must tax it , otherwise nuns and kittens will suffer.

In reality the previous owners tax still shows on data base at least until they send the logbook off, although you can now change ownership online and don't need to send the logbook off . I did this with a car I sold 2 weeks ago, I've just checked and it's still showing as taxed and I know the Moldovan guy who bought it as a non-runner wasn't planning on taxing it.

That's strange as I have kept a check on the past few I've sold and they always state date of liability as the date sold.

Yes, but they don't seem to change the status for a few days or so, when they do they backdate it to whenever you tell them it sold.

Is there a way to find out if a car is still taxed without having the V5?

It was the following day i checked after I did the v5 over the net.

I've just asked about this on the stupid question thread.

So if a car is taxed at the point of a test-drive then would it be okay to chance it? How accurate is the DVLA website? I'm looking at a car on the 'bay that the seller has said there is no tax on it so 'bring trade plates'..it's just one big headache as you need to have insurance before you tax it - basically you have to commit to buying it before you test-drive it? What a crock of shit.

The DVLA website is shit and completely inconsistent.

Last Friday I took my E Class to the Council to be licensed as a Private Hire vehicle. when the woman checked the tax and MOT status on the Doovla site it came back as not existing- everything was still on the previous owners cherished number ,which was taken off over a month ago.

Whilst the woman went to get her supervisor I did another check on my phone to the same site- everything came up as it should with the new number . The Council checked again on another PC and all was OK, WTF?

The Old Bill must be aware of the inconsistencies and ,one would hope, use some common sense when enforcing these petty regulations.

The DVLA site is less than consistantly reliable when used from a mobile device, as I found out the other day.

When Spud brought the Land Rover down yesterday we tried to do the paperwork online, unsurprisingly the DVLA computer has Sundays off so it could not be done. I did it today and changed V5 details online (and got a conformation email) then went straight back on to re-tax. I did have to come out of the website and go back in, as it would not let me transfer to the section to buy tax. I suppose I should be glad that it doesn't close for lunch like the post office counters do.

If I was selling, I'd do the V5 online so I wasn't liable for a drive-by on the way home. If I was buying, I'd talk the seller into sending the form off or leaving it until the morning so I wasn't tapping my card details in on my smartphone. Or their computer, how safe is that?!

Turns out I want the moon on a stick, me.

let's thinks about this, DVLA and police use common sense = quick chat and good day to,you sir, DVLA and Police exercise their powers to the letter of the law = more dosh in the coffers from the poor unsuspecting motorist. Hmmmm, not convinced I would risk trusting to their use of common sense.

Mmm I've never had a bad experience with a traffic cop *touches wood*.

Example - when I bought th Bollox 214, I picked it up on a Saturday and drove it home.

5.30 Sunday evening and I get pulled by A traffic officer for no insurance (genuinely was insured just hadn't shown up on the mid)

I was wearing a pair of joggers and a hoody - prime chav wear.

I explained the situation to the guy that I had bought it yesterday, gave details of the vendor (which matched up with what was on their screen as the registered keeper, Mr Bollox - no it didn't say that)

Provided my correct details incl insurance co, obviously they are closed on a Sunday.

He gave me the benefit of the doubt and I drove home - no car seizure and impound costs etc just a producer

As I left he commented that the car he had just left before pulling me hadn't been so lucky, but he didn't have a story that matched up like mine.

I taxed the astra, whilst at the previous owners house, by logging my lap top into his wifi. (Which I'd already used to transfer him the money via BACS)
